Help! Question about name change...
Hi there!I was wondering when I go to the SS office and DMV do I need the official copy of my marriage license or can I bring a copy of the license that the judge signed? I recently sent that back in to receive my official marriage license, but I have no idea how long it will take to get back from Hempstead and I wanted to officially have my name changed before I go back to teaching in September.
Also, what SS office did you guys use?
Thanks!

Re: Help! Question about name change...
You have to bring the certified copy of the marriage certificate. They won't take anything else.....

I actually had my husband go bring all the papers to SS for me on his way home from work. I just gave him all the forms filled out, my original SS card (which they keep), my original DMV ID, & original marriage certificate (MUST BE THE ORIGINAL). He got a receipt for all the papers as I asked him to because SS is good for swearing they never got something. He went to the office in Melville on his way home from a 12-8 shift. He said it only took him about 5 minutes.

Re: Help! Question about name change...
you need the certified copy of the marriage certificate.FYI - If you have a car in your name (ie: title is in your name) you should change that now too. In order to do that, I was told at DMV that I had to already have my insurance card chagned to the new name. All you need to do is call your ins. company. Tell them and they will change it and fax you a new ins. card for you to bring to DMV (DMV will accept it) and then you get the new card in the mail too.
