House Hunting...
Sometimes sucks! So gross going into some people's homes, where you see freakin' mold and mildew everywhere, it smells like someone died inside the house and they're still there.
BUT, we did find a home that we LOVED, absolutely loved until we 1) found out it's surrounded by one of hte biggest graveyards in Queens, 2) 20 minute walk to the train. BOO!!!!

Re: House Hunting...
OMG I couldn't believe some of the houses that DH and I went to. One had pots collecting water from a dripping ceiling and had wee wee pads with pee stains in several rooms
I think it's still on the market
You wonder if they truly want to sell the house

Yuck!
Hey, I know you guys bought a fixer-upper, do you ever regret doing that?
We found one home that needs to be fully fixed up but it has the space, a little backyard, and perfect little baby room

DH never regretted it although I had my doubts/frustration in the beginning. It just takes so much longer than you'd expect and it's so much money too.
But seeing all the progress we made is amazing. It is really becoming OUR house. Not someone's house that we just moved our stuff into. The great part is that DH is very handy so he did/is doing the majority of the work himself. I think it's so sweet that he's putting so much sweat and tears into our first home and it will be very hard if we ever decide to sell and move.
If the bones of the house is good and the space is good and you're not afraid to work/be patient/spend money than go for it.
We were between the house we got and another one that was similar priced. This house was HUGE compared to the other house but needed more work. DH and i talked about it and decided you can't change the layout or size of the house/property but you can always update it.

Re: House Hunting...
That is very sweet! Yeah, that's our thinking also. The cost of it all scares me, but I think in the end like you said we'll get what we want exactly.

It's amazing how gross some peoples homes are
we saw one that smelled like a barn! I'm not sure you could EVER get the smell out of the house, even if you had the place gutted. You have to sort through a whole lot of ugly to get to your gem

Re: House Hunting...
We just bought a house this month and yeah , you would think people selling their house would at least clean it! So many houses we saw would have been much nicer if they just mowed the lawn and cleaned it up a bit! We did not get a fixer upper because my sweet DH is no handy man lol. Even in buying a house that is in great condition we are spending alot on painting, refinishing the deck and lots of little things that you don't notice until you get in the house! Take your time and good luck

ITA with this. My house didn't need 'any work' and we're already about $5K in the whole and lots of blood sweat and tears

I lived in Middle Village and you would walk out my front door, turn right and you would see the cemetery. It really isn't as bad as you think.
Now the walk from the train that is bad. Where in queens are you looking?

Hm this house that we looked at, was exactly like that. You walk out of front door, turn right and bam it's the cemetery. The street also had a 'Dead End' sign next to one of the houses.
Right now, it's between Middle Village, Glendale, Forest Hills and parts of Kew Gardens. Really loving Glendale now though!

Re: House Hunting...
DH and I want to stay in Rockville centre....but the starter homes run between 550-700k!!! It's a good investment, but a 3200.00 mortgage payment a month is PRETTY scary
