If you and DH travel....

How many trips do you take a year? Do you save up for one big vacation? Or do you do several small trips?

We love traveling, and want to do a lot of it before we consider having a family. We have been lucky enough to take 3 trips since our wedding. But I feel like maybe we should slow down and try to save some more money.

Is this a priority with your DH? We get teased by friends and family that we go away too much!

Re: If you and DH travel....

DH and i have the same mentality. we want to get as much traveling in as possible before we have kids. since our wedding we've been on 2 trips, and we'll be taking one this summer. i think we'll probably do 2 a year until it's time to 'settle down'
however, i also have the same thoughts that maybe we need to save a little more ... i dont know! you're only young once, right??

Re: If you and DH travel....

We are the same..we LOVE to travel..we take two bigger trips a year and then we go away for lots of long weekends throughout the year, we drive to canada, go to Florida for Columbus weekend, drive to Ocean City Maryland, lots of short inexpensive trips. The two bigger trips we go for a week or two if we can. Once we have children our vaction style will slow down a bit until they are a bit older, but getting out and away from every day stress is our priority for now. Even just to go to Philly for the weekend is a blast!!! I agree...you are only young once!! Enjoy it!!!

Re: If you and DH travel....

We get teased by our family too, that we travel so much and how can we afford it since we're trying to save for a house. But the way we see it, once we have children we will not be able to take off on little vacations on a whim like we do now. Once we buy a house and have children the days of traveling alone are basically over. We are newlyweds and we want to enjoy as much time together seeing new places as we can. We feel everything will come in time, the house, the kids, so we are enjoying the time we have alone now to the fullest. We go on a bunch of small vacations throughout the year. We go camping for a week in the summer, we go skiing in the winter, we take mini weekend getaways to atlantic city, foxwoods and mohegan sun. We are planning a big trip for next year. We have to go to a wedding in Florida next May, so we are planning to go a bit before the wedding and going on a cruise for our 1 year anniversary, then to the wedding and then to Universal for a few days!!! I wouldn't trade any of our travels now, for the world. We have so much fun exploring new places together. To me that is what being a newleywed is all about, expploring new things about each other and exploring new things together!!

Re: If you and DH travel....

We usually do at least 2 big vacations a year, and then 2 vacations to Florida to visit his parents.
So, it's about 4 long vacations a year, and then we have a lot of mini-vacations...long weekends somewhere, etc.

We have the same mentality as the other people in this thread, we don't have children now, and we have the opportunity, so we just do it.

Re: If you and DH travel....

We never have the chance to plan far in advance but we do whatever we can when we have the money.

Anyone who makes fun of you or picks on you is just jealous!

Go away if you can afford it!

Re: If you and DH travel....

We go away quite a bit. Mostly because we enjoy it so much. Sometimes it seems like the only times we are 100% focused on each other. There are no dishes to wash or work in the morning. We are in the moment and it's just the two of us.

We usually do one big trip, one group trip with friends and several long weekends & weekend getaways.

And yes, we get teased but so what?

Re: If you and DH travel....

I wish we could go away more, but even before we were married we hadnt taken a trip in 2 years!!!! We went to florida in 2001 and then our honeymoon in 2003!!!
I think we are the opposite and should lighten up a little and take some more trips!
We are planning to go away for our 1 year anniversary.

Re: If you and DH travel....

Our friends think we travel a lot too..but i really think that is a matter of opinion. We dont have a certain number of trips we must take a year..we just sort of decide on the fly based on deals that come up and what we can afford both financially and time away from work. But travelling is important to both of us.

Re: If you and DH travel....

Hrmm
We used to ALWAYS travel before the wedding planning.

Now we hardly ever do (still saving for the ceremony) but when we do travel it's usually about 4-5 times a year. Twice are always home. We double it up and visit his best friend for a bit before we drive up to my parents and see my family. It's relaxing.

We save up FOR our trips!!!

Re: If you and DH travel....

We end up going on a big trip at least once a year. This year it will be our Honeymoon, in Tahitii and Los Angeles. Next year we just booked a cruise to the Southern Carribbean. We also take smaller trips throughout the year. It is nice to get away. When we have kids we plan on traveling with them also. My parenst did this with me, and we learned alot by traveling. We try to save during the year for the trips. (Ex- whatever we save on groceries each week, we put in the bank etc.) Dh has traveled more extensively then me though- he has been to Russia, Italy, etc. I have traveled alot but not as much as he has.

Re: If you and DH travel....

We don't really travel much though we'd like to do it more - We do seem to have to do a lot of little trips for weddings and that sort of thing, and since my brother and SIL and neice live in NC, I try to get there at least a few times a year. But we rarely travel just to go on vacation. I think in all our years together we've done that three times - once for about 3 days to Newport, RI, once to Florida for about a week, and our honeymoon.
I'd kind of like to relax a little bit cause I do get jealous of our friends who go 'on vacation' but I am always worried that we should be doing something practical with the money instead. Maybe once we feel more settled.
If you can do it I think it's awesome and if people give you a hard time, just tell them to mind their own business.

Re: If you and DH travel....

We take one week long trip a yr and multiple weekend trips during the summer months. This summer for example: we are going to LBI (Long Beach Island) in NJ and possibly New Hope in PA. We used to rent a summer house with friends before we got married too, which I miss.

We are going to Mexico in a few weeks and staying at Moon Palace. Cant Wait! I say do it now....everything comes with time and you are only newlyweds once. Who knows what life will bring you down the road.

Re: If you and DH travel....

We go away alot and get teased by our families constantly. I'd say we average at least 5 times a year. We figure we might as well get it in now because after we have a child thats it for a while
