If you HATE the gym...

How do you psych yourself up to go?

I'm all about short term goals. I used to play softball; it was fun and after about an hour and a half, I either won or lost and did certain things during the game that either made me proud or pisssed.

I hate the gym bc there are no short term goals and it's not fun.

You can easily say, 'Here's your goal becca - do this many sets of this thing and run this much on this machine.' Yeah ok great, but that's stupid, where's the result? I can't see it do anything this quickly. Everything with the gym is long term and there is no win or lose.

What the eff am I supposed to do? DH gets back soon and is going to wanna start working out regularly again and I hate it.

Re: If you HATE the gym...

You are a perfect candidate for p90x!!! You are constantly challenged and he (tony horton) sets up check in points that serve as points of accomplishment!

DO IT DO IT DO IT!

Another great result will be your hot @ss body!!!

DH and I started another cycle of p90x on saturday...I am modifying to it 4-5 times a week and I feel SO accomplished after every time I increased a # of reps, etc.

Re: If you HATE the gym...

I find it so much easier to get my butt to the gym if I have a gym buddy. It holds you responsible and you don't want to let the other person down by not showing up, etc.

I also love dance cardio classes with friends b/c it's so much more fun and you can goof off together.

I find it impossible to do a video in my living room b/c i'd rather be parked on the couch!

Re: If you HATE the gym...

I need a friend to go with me. My friend and I right now are going running/jogging/walking every day after work. We push each other to go and try not to flake on each other. Plus it's good gossip time for us.

I'm not a gym fan at all - I'm actually debating joining LA Fitness for the classes cause I feel like I'll get a better workout for those. I like classes cause it's a set time and you don't choose what you do - someone else do.

I'm afraid of P90x! My friend got it and did it a little while and never went back to it after she went to FL for a long weekend.

DH has the dvds, I ought to give it a shot.

Re: If you HATE the gym...

Working out with a friend is nice, but it doesn't improve my workout.

Actually, if I'm alone or if the buddy and I split up, I'm more apt to get a better workout. Weird.

If not, I end up socializing.

Classes might work, but I get mad at the enthusiasm of the instructors. It's like, 'Shut up you annoying jerk!'

Re: If you HATE the gym...

not the answer you were looking for but if you don't like the gym, don't go ... do something you enjoy ... or at least, something you won't hate as much.

I work out with the PS3 using the 'Mel B' workout game... it's pretty good and i'm always sweaty and gross by the end ... best part is that time goes by pretty quickly.

You should def give it a shot if you already have the dvds! It is intense but he provides lots of options /instruction to modify pretty much everything! You will definitely see results in the way of endurance and strength. I have a major love-hate relationship with p90! But at the end of the day, the things I love outweigh the temporary hatred I feel...haha

Re: If you HATE the gym...

I cant get myself to the gym either, I get so bored. I do try walk everywhere. where ever or when ever there is an opportunity to go some where, unless its super far or the weather is super nasty (heavy heavy rain), I walk. that is how I initially lost the weight.
not sure this is what u wanted to hear or were asking, but this is what I do

Re: If you HATE the gym...

I go to a step class at Lucille Roberts that isn't your typical step class. It's super complicated and tons of fun. It's more like step choreography, so the challenge and 'goal' to me is getting the choreography right.

Re: If you HATE the gym...

about 2-3 years ago I used to hate the gym and had to force myself to go. Now I have to force myself to take days off.

A few things that helped me get into the gym.

1. New playlists! I would download new songs and make new playlists on my ipod. If you find really good music it will def. get you excited to workout.

2. Personal training sessions- these can be $$$$ but I saw great results. Since I had appointments I had no excuse!

3. I signed up for a race (10k) and began training. Knowing I had a race coming up forced me to get there so I would be prepared. It was a great goal!

4. Classes! I found classes that I loved and was excited to go to. My current favorite is Tactix- which is a martial arts class mixed in with high intensity training.

Re: If you HATE the gym...

What about yoga or pilates or a barre method class? i hate the gym but i love going to the studios that are specific to a type of class.

If you hate running on the treadmill run outside! Its so nice out! No reason to stay couped up in the gym!

The goals I set for myself are all running related. Even though i like to run, I usually can only motivate myself by training for a half marathon, or doing speed work to improve my time.

if I am not running, i am usually taking physique 57 which is so much fun (Kelly Ripa takes it).

I'm with Rachel, and blame her for my addiction to Physique 57. Whether or not you have a long term goal, being in a class setting makes you more competitive with yourself. I can't just go to the gym and do elliptical or weights, I need to be in a class setting at Physique 57, Zumba, or Pilates to motivate me!

I also started running again and running with a buddy in Central Park and signing up for races is helping me motivate since I'm basically training for a race in the near future.
