Kinda Spinoff----work related
If you missed work....would it be a big deal? Like are there serious things depending on only you?I only ask b/c of the florist story from BHB where she had no back up plan and this person was relying on her for a service and without her, it caused a disaster for this woman's WEDDING.
My job-
It's just me in charge of all my classes but I feel like if something really bad happened or I had to miss, my boss (an older woman who was a former performer) could probably just teach the class or would ask the kids what they were working on with me and just have them do that or they might be able to find a substitute in time.
It would be a big deal but not really a serious situation.

Up until about a month ago I would have said yes it would be a big deal, because I have reports I used run every day that have to go to certain people... but now I've taken over someone else's job while they're on maternity leave so I had to train someone else to do my old job so everything would be ok.(I really hope so since I'm on vacation all week, haha)

Re: Kinda Spinoff----work related
Totally depends on the day. If it's a day where one of my kids has an emergency or moves, then yea, it's a pretty big deal. But if it's just a regular day, it's not that bad. But while I was on my HM we got someone to cover all my cases because it was too long for the kids to be without a caseworker.

Re: Kinda Spinoff----work related
Short term it would not be a big deal but long term it would have a negative impact.

Re: Kinda Spinoff----work related
yeah depends on the day. regular day, my cases can wait. if i have a court appearance or a motion to argue, it could be a problem if there wasn't enough notice for someone to get up to speed.i always think about how lawyers that are solo practitioners deal with this. i mean really what do you do?

Ditto. If I'm out for more than a couple of days, I have to prep a whole plan for other people to follow through on things in my absence.

I work in a very small office and if I’m out, either my co-worker or the foreman can take over. I hate taking days off though, I don’t know why~I feel like a slacker when I do.

Re: Kinda Spinoff----work related
I just moved, but my old job was the Director of Student Activities at a small college. I was the only one who did my job, so you better believe I wrote EVERYTHING down just in case of emergencies so that each program could stand on their own and one of my student workers would take over. When you work with vendors on a daily basis (for your career, not for your wedding) you have to understand that things happen and be flexible as possible with all of your plans.

I'm a teacher so no, nothing horrible would happen. Other teachers would get paid on their preps to do coverages. My room would probably be a little messy when I come back, but nothing terrible would happen.

Re: Kinda Spinoff----work related
Yes, if I just didn't show up to work one day with no explanation, I'd be fired. I'd be told not to come back.I'm a receptionist so if I don't show, the floor doesn't open up, the phone doesn't get answered, and the conference rooms don't get set up. That would make for MANY angry attorneys.
ETA: My job is SO simple that anyone could do it, but honestly, not many idiots here would know how to.
Edited again: And if they knew how to, they'd have no inclination to!

Re: Kinda Spinoff----work related
It's a big deal. I work on EXTREMELY tight deadlines and unfortunately I am the only one in the office who knows how to handle some things.I hate going on vacation sometimes because it's more stressful before and after at work that I almost feel like it's not always worth it. I have an assistant who I can leave stuff with but most of the time, the stuff basically sits until I get back.
I was freaking out this week because I was having email issues while I was in Disney. My blackberry just wasn't receiving mail. I think the office called me about 7 times a day. I would wait until 4:30 or so and then call back and take care of it all at once.

Hahaha, this is me too. I was out for 2 weeks for the wedding and it was fine. I had ppl in my department cover for me. I work in Marketing. 4 of us do the same job just on different product lines. The people covering for me know exactly what to do...they just don't know my products as well as I do.

My Mom just never takes sick days...I can't remember her ever staying home sick when I was a kid, and even now she comes in every day...I don't know how she does it, I have to practically beat her down to take a day for herself.

My desk wouldn't fall apart without me if I missed a day or two but when I'm out for anymore than 2 days, its a complete sh!tshow.

Re: Kinda Spinoff----work related
At my old job, if I wasn't in, my work wasn't done for me...yet if anyone else was out, I was expected to do all their work for them. Equitable? No.Now with my new job, I know firsthand that if I were to be out on lets say maternity leave, my job would be completely covered. 2 girls are going out at the same time, they're due 2 weeks apart, and we have the whole 3 month plan mapped out of who's going to do what, so I'm sure I'd be covered like that as well.

Yes, major problem if I don't show up....I don't earn any money. Owning your own business has it's pluses, but the big minus is no paid vacations or sick days!Welcome New Vendors
