What is/are the main difference(s), if any, between Indian and Bengali food? Do you cook both/either? If so, do you have any good and fairly simple recipes?I love this food so much (Indian - different regions. I noticed a Bengali place on 2nd ave in the mid 70s I think...I want to try it out). I would love to try and prepare some basic veg dishes in a way that really highlights the flavors of the region.
TIA!

Re: KRIS...
The main difference is that Bengali food is very meat-centered, whereas Indian cuisine has dishes with some meat but is extremely vegetarian-friendly since much of India is populated with Hindu people (and they are usually vegetarian). Bengli food also uses more root veggies - especially potatoes, and coconut milk, and different kinds of spices than Indian food.I don't cook much of it, if only because the one decent thing about MIL is that she's a fantastic cook, and she's always sending food over for us. I'll help in the kitchen when I'm at the IL's house, but I really don't make it at home since we have it at least once a week or so, courtesy of the beast-in-law.
But a quick search of 'indian' on allrecipes gave me more than 400 recipes, so you might want to click here for some!
