So I watched the VMAs last night. Havent really watched it completely in years. I remember when I used to LOVE it. I really feel like pop music just succccks now. I don't know if it's just me (and DH). I used to love Eminem (I still do, but I feel like he completely sold out).Soooo what were your thoughts about the VMAs? Do you like pop music or music on the radio today? Do you think music like Lady Gaga and Justin Beiber are music that will last in the future like The Beatles?

Great question!!Pop music today is.... catchy... like crabs. They are songs that I get stuck in my head all the time, but I don't like them like I do older music. I don't know if it's just because I grew up on a completely different sound, but punk/grunge/80s music will always be my favorite.
On the Eminem note. I've always liked him a lot and I feel bad for him that people are saying he 'sold out'. What exactly makes you say he sold out? I listen to the lyrics and (on most songs) they are actually very deep. I think his music is evolving, not that he sold out. JMO though!
ETA: And there is no way that Lady Gaga or any of these 'artists' (and I use the term loosely
) are in even the same category as The Beatles or the Stones or anything like that. Half of them don't even have the talent to put out a decent 2nd or 3rd single let alone the staying power of some of the older bands.

i didn't watch so i can't comment on the vma's but no, i don't necessarily like the pop music on the radio today. some of it isn't bad, but most of it is! and there is no way in hell justin bieber or lady gaga will stick around like the beatles. lady gaga will stick around for a pretty long time, but the little fagg will be gone in the next few years just like the backstreet boys, nsync, etc.etc.

hahahah ITA about the catchy like crabs. They do get stuck in my head sometimes and it annoys me, but I feel like this music will never stick. My husband always says it's disposable music. It wont last like The Beatles, Motown, etc.
Eminem used to make fun of pop artists, and now he is singing with Rhianna? That is what makes me feel like he sold out. He was so anti- pop and it just seems hypocritical. I do, HOWEVER, like some songs on his cd., but he is singing too much and I wish he was rapping more. I wanted to go see him and JayZ tonight, so I still am a fan of his...I just dont get what happened to him? I cant believe he has songs with Rhianna...

I watched it....thank god for DVR, as I taped it and fast forwarded through most of it.I thought Chelsea Handler would be a great host, but she seemed nervous and not as witty as she usually is.
I threw up in my mouth a little at the notion that Linkin Park and Paramore were the representation of today's rock in terms of the list of performers.
This sh!t isn't going to ever become close to the Beatles. Not even close to the Monkees.
I long for the days where the VMAs meant that the drummer from Rage was going to climb the set, or that Krist Novoselic would get slammed in the face with a bass guitar.
And I pray for youngins who aren't exposed to real music.

Hate pop music, hate VMAs, hate most of MTV but I do love Jersey Shore!ESPECIALLY HATE LADY GAGA.
Cannot see ANY of this music being relevant in later generations.

Re: *********NW QOTD- 9/13**********
this is such a good question! but then again, analyzing music brings out the total nerd in me
.i am not a fan of a lot of pop music today, which is why i was pleasantly suprised to see florence and the machine at the vmas! so refreshing to see something completely different. i thought her performance was flawless (though i can totally understand if people get annoyed with her diction); it was the perfect combination of music and art, i loved it. i don't think it will catch on (atleast not more than her one single) to a mainstream audience though because she is so different, but it would be great if she does!
i adore taylor swift because i think someone like her would have been SO wonderful to have when i was a teenager! it's so nice to hear a late teen singing age-appropriate songs and not sexing them up to garner attention. however, that girl cannot sing live for the life of her. she's always flat and it hurts my ears. rihanna is always out of tune too and i'm not a fan of her music in general, so double boo to her.
i don't get why anyone likes justin bieber. he's a tiny little sprout of a boy who is stuck in his elementary school voice. he and enrique iglesias (whom i know was not at the vmas) just annoy me to no end. that's all i can say about them without getting fired up
.as for gaga...she's out of her mind, but she's a genius. i love that all of the music from her first album has a fluent theme in it, and i can't wait to see what she has in store for her music and shows in her next collection of work! also, just as a person and not as a pop artist, i find it so refreshing to hear a celebrity saying that they stand up for something (i.e., gay rights) and actually following through with their statements over and over again. she's fabulous.

I like some pop music, but only the things that are interesting or just good quality songs (not the same stuff over and over again).I think Lady Gaga is the new Madonna and she'll stand the test of time. And I think Justin Beiber is just another kid in the long line of teen idols people will be embarrassed about liking.

Well he has a song on his new album that he actually talks about it a little bit. In it he says he was on a downward spiral and he was starting shitt with Lil Wayne and Kanye and others and when he sat down and really thought about it he was just trying to tear them down because he was jealous that he wasn't performing anymore. So he went on to work with some of those very artists. I love his song with Lil Wayne in particular.
As for the singing, I kinda like it. He's not the best singer but I feel like maybe he's singing more than rapping because his life his changing and his music is changing with it. And I can respect that. But I totally get where you're coming from! I still got love for him though!

I've the watched the VMA's since I can remember and it was a bit boring this year. I was definitely expecting Chelsea Handler to be more entertaining than she was, she was more tame than I thought she would be.I did like how it was more focused on music than it has been previouse years, by having more artists perform and going from artist to artist.
The new artist if you can call them that are definitely not like what they were and what we were growing up and I feel bad for these kids to not get the same great music we had
Love Eminem
