probably stupid question about phones ...

if you have your cell phone AT&T and want to upgrade your phone but without renewing your contract, can you do that?

I know that unlocked phones exist and i'm assuming that means you just buy the new phone, put your old sim card into the new phone, and you're done ... but i just want to make sure i'm not missing something.

u can do that but it is VERY expensive unless you're buying a regular phone and not a smartphone

like i think the iphone retails for $799 if you're not renewing your contract
