Questions Regarding Name Change

Question 1:
A few sources have said to 'order an annual credit report to make sure all old accounts are closed and that no one is opening accounts using your maiden name'. Has anyone done this? Do you look up your account under your old name, new name or both? And I thought credit reports go by your social security number not by name... so should their actually be a difference? I don't want to close my old accounts just switch my name on the existing accounts... I'm a bit confused. Any help here?

Question 2:
Some people are saying you need to notify the post office. Is this true? Who do you call and what do you say exactly? Aren't you responsible for notifying companies and isn't the rest of the change through dmv when you change your name and address on your license? Has anyone spoken to the post office? What exactly do I do?

As for the first question, I don't think you need to close old accounts. I would make them aware of the name change though. As for credit reports, you have to give your SS# and name as it appears on your SS card. Never heard of notifying the post office though.

i havent heard of that either...just call and change your name...you shouldnt have any problems.

You do not have to close your accounts you only have to call and change your name. Some companies will ask you to fax a copy of you marriage licence. As for credit reports- It is a good idea to check them annually or before any major purchase like a house or car. The credit reports go by your SS # so once you change you name with SS you should be all set.
As for changing you name with the post office I do not think you need to but you can check their website for confirmation.
