Refinishing Hardwood Floors?

Any recommendations? We are almost at that point and we do have someone in mind, but Rob is not sure if he wants to go with that person, so I thought I would ask all my friends on here if they had any good experiences.

Thanks!

hi Cira!

we had ours done and were very hapy...we used the same people my sister used in Huntington if you are interested....I am always nervous recommending people...but my sisters floors looked gourgeous...she had an extra coat done since they are there long term...we opted not to spend the $$ since we are only planning a 4 more year stay....

Re: Refinishing Hardwood Floors?

jumping in on this post since we are at the same point. Would you mind sharing the approximate price you paid. I have one quote for $1.50/sq ft. but at the Home Expo the Home Depot flooring guy told us $4.50/sq ft.

Re: Refinishing Hardwood Floors?

I'd like to also jump in.

What is considered 'refinishing' How many tasks are involved ?
Our floors (under the carpets) are really not in bad shape at all. Actually they look great, but the outside of the floor (the'outline' of where the nails from the carpet were) just seems to need some touching up. The rest of the floor is shiny and new looking (much to our surprise) So do they come and evaluate the floors first and then give a price ?

Cira-glad to hear your home is coming along ! Sorry I dont have any advice sweetie

Cira,

We are getting ours done as we speak, they were not in great shape, and sections needed to be replaced. WE are getting the livingroom and den redone and having floors installed in the bedroom. I can let you know how they came out by Friday

Re: Refinishing Hardwood Floors?

Ladies, thank you so much! Rob's co-worker recommended a guy who does beautiful work, but the total bill will be $1500. I guess the motto 'quality is remembered when cost is long lost forgotten' could relate here ... the thing is: this guy will fill in the cracks with wood putty, so Rob doesn't have to do that himself! One less thing to worry about !

But Rob's co-worker is not the only person in the world, so I would love to hear about all your experiences - MichelleW, Bride04. Also, Amy, Diane, Princess99, and Jenny5150 - thanks for the recommendation - I may be inquiring further.

Anna ... I think with refinishing - they sand the floors down and then varnish. Rob said that you should call and inquire - they may be able to just sand down the edges.
The house is coming along ... I'll be glad when we are in and sure to let you know!

Deb, thanks for the recommendation! You are a cutie pie!

FranM - $4.50 is way to much. We got quotes from $1.00 - $2.00 a square foot! Rob thinks that may be for 'installing'

And Michele ... we were lucky, we had some flooring and the rest, Rob and my dad were able to lay down.

to all of you! Thanks!

Re: Refinishing Hardwood Floors?

Just another 'heads up' for everyone getting any work done. Check out the Better Business Bureau website bbb.org, just to play it safe. John always does that when we get things done on the house. Just last nite we were getting quotes for a new fence and he even told us of who to steer clear from. (he was a referral from a friend, so totally trustworthy.. )

Just wanted to say, keep that in mind everyone bbb.org

Re: Refinishing Hardwood Floors?

We had the hardwood floors in our house redone about a year ago. We used a guy from the PennySaver and because we were hesitant, we only did one room (we chose this guy based on his knowledge when we asked questions. All 3 people we got quotes from were the same price).

Well, the floors came out fantastic. I mean picture perfect (although I don't have on to post). He sanded them down so no marks remained (the woman in the house before use had w-w carpet and had them steam cleaned - well that water soaked into the wood floors underneath and made water spots). We called him back and had him to the entire house - living room, dining room, hall, 2 bedrooms and 1 office room.

We were charged $1.50 a square foot. The name of the company was P&G and the number is 631-981-4037. We dealt with Paul on the phone but I don't remember the name of the guy who did the actual work. Leave a message and he'll call you back!

Re: Refinishing Hardwood Floors?

chmlenger.....That is the same company we used. I HIGHLY recomned them. They gve us the cheapest quote, and did a GREAT job. We had our kitchen, and dining room done about a year and a half ago, and our floors still look like they were just done

Re: Refinishing Hardwood Floors?

Michele that isn't true..

Ronnie said you can do the inlay bc he did it for about 4k..

and YOU never need to really replace Michelle W..
He said you can always sand down enuff that the wood wouldn't need to be picked up and put down.
He said they have done floors over 50 years old and no matter how bad the wood it NEVER gets taken up bc then the floor can Shift?

Just my 5 cents!

Re: Refinishing Hardwood Floors?

T,

There were no hardwood floors in the bedroom, so we are starting from scratch.

Certain pieces had to be replaced because for some reason there was plywood there.
