Re: vacation question...
I don't but I throw out all my milk. If you turn it off, you'll have to buy all new stuff (like mayo, mustard, etc.) that lasts longer than a week or two.

I do the same thing - anything that could go bad while we're gone I throw out but I always leave it on and keep the long term stuff.

Re: vacation question...
Nope, too many frozen items and condiments that need to stay cool. I do unplug other appliances also because those are supposed to cost $ even when not turned on like lamps, computer, etc. The think I messed up though was I unplugged our entire entertainment system and completely forgot that our DVR needs to be plugged in. We had no recorded shows when we came home!

Re: vacation question...
never done this before. never thought about it. and now that it's been brought to my attention... i still won't do it.
I usually have someone that comes in and out of my apt while I am away to cat sit and also sometimes even just stay there so this would make no sense for me to do anyway.
I don't really see the point, unless you are going away for a LONG time.

Re: vacation question...
This might end up being one of those things I regret asking b/c the answer is obvious....but why do people unplug things?
I've never unplugged anything.

It cuts down on your usage of electricity, as well as prevention of a fire - if you're not home & dont need to have your coffee maker, toaster, etc plugged in then cut down on $$ you would be throwing away on having those appliances plugged in while you're not at home, not to mention a chance of a fire in case the plug/outlet got hot.
I do leave frig on ALWAYS - too much of a PITA to unplug & deal with throwing out food & condiments and wasting more money having to re-buy stuff.
We pretty much unplug everything else, shut off our water too (God forbid of a burst pipe & flooding)

Well your cable box, microwave, etc. still use some electricity even if they are just plugged in and not turned on. I guess this is a cost cutting tactic, though I've never done it.
I've never turned off my fridge either, but we always have someone staying there with the dogs, so I'm no help.

And I never unplug anything... I think as long as the appliances are off you're okay... I cant imagine it saving you that much more money...

Re: vacation question...
it's more about the risk of fire than the money saving thing. i know it's not damned likely that a fire would start considering things are plugged in 24/7 while we're home ... but it's easy enough to do so why not
