DMV - license, title, registrationCredit cards - you can do these by phone
Bank
All but Credit cards needs original marriage license with original drivers license.
It seems overwhelming at first...but you'll get there.
OH, and don't forget to change your name at work too!

So basically we need to order a ton of certified copies? they have the nerve to charge $10 a copy - all because they STAMP a copy of a piece of paper!!!RUDE!

Re: We just got marriage license.Do we need original to change my name with social security,DMV,etc?
Social Security sends the license back to you. I bought two copies and they got me through all my name-changing.When you get it back from SS, you can use the same one for DMV and work since they won't keep them.
Just remember your pen at the DMV. You have to buy one if you forget!

Re: We just got marriage license.Do we need original to change my name with social security,DMV,etc?
Is there a site you can use to tell you everything you need to do? For example, I had no clue I had to get extra copies for ssn and stuff. I figure dthey looked at it and that's it - like dmv when you get your license or permit.I started going to all the websites for ssn and dmv today..I have those two bookmarked and I looked up the nearest location but haven't read them yet.
Is there a checklist or something??? that kind of outlines all the different rules?

Re: We just got marriage license.Do we need original to change my name with social security,DMV,etc?
the title is important - no one had told me to bring that, so I couldn't change my name on my registration without it. Not that big of a deal, but you can get a ticket for not having your name match on both your license and your reg. good luck! OH, also, be prepared to take a photo at DMV - I didn't knwo I just couldn't use my old photo!

Re: We just got marriage license.Do we need original to change my name with social security,DMV,etc?
You do not have to get extra copies of your marriage certificate. You take your original with you when you go to each place. They make a copy and return the original to you. You should start with social security, because you need to change that before you can change your employement info. Then DMV for license, registration, car title etc. Credit cards can be done over the phone.Don't forget about any insurance policies also. If you or your husband have life insurance or retirement accounts you will need to make sure that you list each other as beneficiary.

Re: We just got marriage license.Do we need original to change my name with social security,DMV,etc?
I didn't need a copy of my ss card or my marriage certificate, I brought the original (they always want that anyway) and they made a copy like Wendy said. The DMV was a bit of a pain because I didn't have my title either like Jpsgirl said. I had to come back and do my registration and title at once. But still it didn't take a long time to do it at all.I did have one credit card that needed me to send in a copy of my marriage certificate to change my name...I was like are you kidding me?????

What do you need to bring to Social Security? Do you need your social security card? I don't know if I lost it. I know the number.

You need your old card but they didn't take my old card...Go to www.ssa.gov for forms you need or what you should do to replace that card Novembergirl.

Re: We just got marriage license.Do we need original to change my name with social security,DMV,etc?
I just called a few credit cards last night, and the major ones were fine! Took my info right over the phone. Verizon Wireless was another story - they asked me to bring in a copy of my marriage certificate to a nearby store! No way - I barely have time to go to DMV for the more important things! I don't have the time for that, so that'll stay as my maiden name.SSA was so easy - I was in and out in 2 mins - but I'm not looking forward to DMV

Teri, I agree with you about Verizon, wow that is crazy, I would not have changed it either.DMV wasn't that bad really, you could do it all in one shot, just remember your title of your car, old registration and license.

Can I start changing the credit cards or do I have to go to Social Security first?

Re: We just got marriage license.Do we need original to change my name with social security,DMV,etc?
most CCs took my info over the phone - they didn't require any proof, which kinda surprised me!

Scares me to think that you can change your name over the phone for a credit card. But also remember that this isn't a race to get everything done. If it takes a few weeks, it takes a few weeks. I hypenated my name but I doubt I will do any changes for months, if at all.

I know its going to take a while to get everything changed. Social Security has horrible hours so I would have to wait until I have another day off.

Re: We just got marriage license.Do we need original to change my name with social security,DMV,etc?
yes, it is overwhelming at first. SSA doesn't have good hrs, but at least it's quick - I'll have to take more time off to go to DMV.And to clarify about the CCs, they did ask for info verifying my identity (mom's maiden name) but i was still surprised no name change proof was needed.
The only other thing you'd probably have to think about is travel documents - with heightened security, your ID should all match. DL, Passport, etc.
