Leese’s March 25, 2006 Wedding Extravaganza – Floral Terrace, SilverFox, Signature Flowers, All-Star Limo, and much much more!

WELCOME!
Doing a wedding review on LIWeddings is like carving your names into an old oak tree. You hope that what you leave behind will remain for a long time and that someone will look you up someday and you will have made a difference. I got engaged in November of 2004, after dating my DH for almost 3 years. It was a magical night in Little Italy that will remain in my heart till the end of time. We quickly decided on date, venue and I set forth to produce the biggest event of our lives. The theme of the wedding was “Old Hollywood” and my colors rested on the jewel tones (gold, merlot and eggplant).

I will end speculation right now by saying that our wedding day was simply the most emotional, most fun, most special day of our lives. Everyone has commented that it’s the best wedding that they’ve been to and that I should become a wedding planner! The food was to die for – we had surf and turf for dinner and I keep hearing about it. The V hour was a great bonus and I am glad I did it! Our bridal party looked amazing, our guests enjoyed themselves, the weather held out for us and the dancing was so much fun. Every detail was perfection and it came from the heart. I kissed my husband a million times and I ate 3 lobster tails…. So honestly, I can say that March 25, 2006 was the best day of my life!

A: Top Notch Job
B: Very Good
C: Adequate
D: Sub-Par
F: Horrendous

Long Island Bridal Shower
7th Street Café
Garden City, NY
Grade: A

My wonderful mom and MOH, Trish, held my bridal shower the Café and it was a great affair. I loved the room, the service, and of course the many wonderful details that they did. It was a “Hollywood” theme and so perfect for me.
My Red Carpet

Centerpieces:

Details, The Cut-Out Forties Movies Stars were each “table number”, we had a playbill menu, and tons of other fun stuff!

I am a big ham!

AND NOW……for the main event!

GETTING THE WORD OUT

Wedding Invitations, Thank You Cards, Place Cards, Favor Labels
Not From A Box
www.notfromabox.com
Grade: A

I’ve had them bookmarked since before I was engaged. This was a splurge for me, but totally worth it. Took me exactly one month to place order, review and make changes for my invites, but I was not in any rush and went through at least 8 proofs. The customer service was great and with my large order they included a lot of extras. The final product was excellent. I was also able to order the same paper from them for all my DIY Paper Products. Recommend wholeheartedly!

Wedding Website
EWedding.com
www.ewedding.com
Grade: A

Great website, tools and price. People think I know “html” and I do not! I made it into a 40’s inspired site. Now, I keep them up-to-date with our wedding photos.

REGISTRY

Linens-and-Things
www.lnt.com
Grade: B

The get an “A” for their merchandise, I love shopping there. They get a “C” for their bad customer service and registry. They have a big problem with updating their registry, thus leading to duplicates (and even triples!).

Fortunoff’s
www.fortunoff.com
Grade: A

Fortunoff’s is a rite of passage. You just can’t go wrong with them. I also utilized them for many home items, such as my dining room table (thanks to the many gift cards we got!). They are also a great place to register if you are a “tri-state” engaged couple!

ATTIRE

Bridal Gown, Forever Yours #43144
Lillette’s of Baldwin
Grade: Christina, Sales: A
Lila, Alterations: A

I found my dress there and went to many other stores in between. I ended up going three times but the last time I happened to have Christina as my assistant. She was great and if you do go there, I would suggest using her. They adjusted the price of my gown because it was too high and I appreciated that. However, if I had bought it the day I saw it, I would have been out a lot of money. Moral of the story is to do your homework and know the prices of your gowns before you purchase it.

The dress was ordered in July and arrived in November. I also had alterations done there, which was very good. I suggest, if you can, to arrange your fittings in the middle of the day. It is so much better. I had my second fitting and went home with misgivings and wanted it taken in a bit more. Lila, my seamstress and her assistants, patiently dealt with me.

Christina suggested my veil and headpiece and she was dead-on. Thank you Mom, for buying them for me!!! Christina is a godsend to Lillette’s. If I could make any suggestions, go see her to buy your gown and have Lila alter it.

Bridesmaids Dresses, After Six Style #A6249
Lillette’s of Baldwin
Christina: A
Alterations: A
Management: D

With my 40’s theme, I wanted to girls to have a sultry but sophisticated look. I was blessed with gorgeous bridesmaids and wanted them to look “hot.” When I saw this gown, I immediately knew it was the one. With my discount, I decided to bring the girls back to Lillette’s. Christina was amazing – she had all the receipts ready to go and took care of my girls. We ordered in October and they arrived in December. I picked up some of my OOT girls’ dresses and was a little disappointed that there was a white dust on a lot of them. Only my MOH had her gown altered there and it was a fine experience.

My grade for “management” at Lillette’s is because of a problem that happened with one of my bridesmaids. Her dress was damaged. It had a dark black stain and was ripped in the back. The management of Lillette’s assured me it would be taken care of (and it was through a new panel being put in) but the experience of dealing with the management (and only the management) was not what I would consider “good customer service.” It was so surprising because the staff at Lillette’s is amazing. I still recommend Lillette’s to you for bridesmaids dresses, but I would check every single dress for stains.

Mother of the Bride Dress
Bridal Garden of Bethpage
Grade: A

They were the first shop I visited, thanks to Kissy27, and the final place for my mom to buy her dress. Very nice and not pushy. I recommend. Her alterations were perfect.

Tuxedos for Groom and Groomsmen
Dante Zeller Tuxedo of Wayne, New Jersey
Grade: F

The boys were dressed on the day of the wedding. If you ever find yourself in Jersey, stay away. My DH went for over five fittings just to get his tux.

He wants me to include the following about the Westbury store; no one was able to provide directions for him (he was OOT); the store would not expediate the changes, even though our rehearsal was occuring shortly and there were major problems; one GM went from a size 50 to a 56 Jacket and the store attempted to put SAFETY PINS in the jacket and he would have to wear it like that the day of the wedding! The day of the wedding they called with a new jacket 2 hours to go.

I will say now, even if you have OOT groomsmen, go to a Mom-and-Pop type of place. It’ll be so much better, trust me.

I wrote a letter to them, because I believe that if I am going to say something online, I should tell them first. The president of the company called me and left a message. I returned the call three times and he never phoned back. I guess that’s where they learn their customer service from…

Out of Town Accomodations
Wingate Inn, Garden City
Cynthia Bevington, Sales Manager
Grade: B+

My DH stayed there the night before with half of our wedding and the night of our wedding we were partying in the bar after our reception. Our room was beautiful (although pricey) and the shuttles were great. Cynthia is a doll!

A photo of the OOT bags I created! Everything matched my invites, etc. and the guests loved them!

Rehearsal Dinner:
Dad’s firehouse, Tarallo’s Catering, Dortoni for Groomsmen Cake
Grade: A

When you grew up in a firehouse your whole life, have your engagement party at a firehouse, what else would you do but go to a firehouse for your rehearsal dinner? Dortoni’s cake was amazing, Tarallo’s food is always great and it was a relaxed and simple dinner. I ended up doing the legwork of decorating simply and picking up the beer, etc. but we got a waitress (we learned our lesson!) and she was great.

GIFTS
We got my mom the Lenox Mother’s Touch from Ebay, his mom got a Pucci Scarf and my dad got a big old box of fancy cigars! They loved their presents.

Bridesmaids Gifts
Bridesmaid Hair Combs
www.headpieceheaven.com
Grade: A

In order to keep the 40’s theme going, I purchased hair combs for my bridal party from this website. They are located in NJ and I received them quickly. They cut me a good deal and the workmanship was amazing. Highly Recommend.

Bathrobes and Matching Slippers
Fortunoff’s
Grade: A

Great price during a sale, I had them monogrammed and chose colors that they would like…They loved it (a little too much as you can see…, gotta love my girl Trish)

Groosmen Gift
Leatherman Set
www.leatherman.com
Grade: A

Besides cigars, my DH got his guys this tool thing from Costco. He got a great price. I have no idea what it is, but they liked it. Even one of my girls wished she got that, instead of her present!

March 25, 2006

Mother Nature:
Grade: A (for not raining)

For a week before the wedding I would check out the weather channel and website all the time. I was freaked out because they said it was going to rain, sleet and hail on my wedding day. I prayed and prayed and put rosaries on the bushes. The day of, I yelled at my photographer, telling him that we weren’t going to take photos outside because of the rain. But guess what, the rain stayed away and I got to take my pics. So, thanks Mother Nature and to my friends in heaven who helped that day!

Hair and Makeup:
Hair: Who Does Your Hair? In Bellmore (Sally)
Makeup: Angel Eyes (Denise)
Grade: A

I’m doing this together because it’s easier that way, but they are not affiliated. I go to Sally for hair normally and it was a must for me to have her do my wedding. I brought her two or three pics but seriously, she just knows my hair. Nothing can take the place of that bond.

Denise was out of this world amazing on my makeup. You all liked my trial, but she did the day of even better. I’m not normally this glamorous! She said that she hates when her pic is up on LIWeddings, but too bad Denise…she is a gorgeous person inside and out and I simply adore her. Do you have a makeup gal? No? FM her NOW!

FLOWERS:
Signature Florist of Bellmore
Grade: A

The 06’ers know how crazed I was with flowers. Signature was recommended to me by hmpena and I went and met with George the owner. I wasn’t nervous to see the final result. The girl’s bo-k’s were perfect – they complimented their gowns wonderfully. The centerpieces were stunning and larger than expected. People are still raving about them. I highly, highly recommend them. I recommend Yelena above and beyond for her service, honesty, and great personality. She even sent me flowers AFTER the wedding to wish us luck.

LIMO:
All-Star Limo, Farmingdale, NY
Grade: B+

DH requested only a few things. One such request was the limo bus – and I agreed. Overall, All-Star was pretty good. They were very attentive to the bride. However, the driver of the limo bus told my DH that he couldn’t take liquor on board, which wasn’t true, instead of calling the main office and finding out if he was right. While we were in church, the driver checked with the owner and they told him we WERE allowed to bring it aboard. Why he didn’t call and ask immediately, I’ll never know.

The second bad thing was the driver of the limo bus took a wrong turn when going to the Floral Terrace, costing us another ten minutes of precious time. Why he made a left instead of a right, again I’ll never know. It just seemed like he wasn’t experienced enough with the bus, the area and the rules of his company.

That said, I did like All-Star and I would recommend them. But, if there are any issues day-of, have them call Debbie immediately.

PHOTO:
Silverfox, Mineola, NY
Photographer: Don
Grade: A-

I love my proofs. I wish there were a few more formals and some more of my guests at their tables (most were dancing). But other than that, love it and totally recommend Silverfox and Don. John the owner is so great and his staff is a pleasure. Don is a nice guy and a snappy dresser too! Jackie who does your albums is amazing and patient!

VIDEO:
Pennylane Productions, Islandia, NY
Grade: A++

I loved working with Adam and I enjoyed my videographer Sean, who was nice and unobtrusive. They are a LIW vendor and competitively priced. We worked together on the music selection and Adam really delivered an amazing video and went out of his way to get it to me as soon as possible!

Check out this thread with my wedding clip!

CHURCH:
St. William the Abbot
Can’t Grade a Church

I was a parishioner at St. William’s from birth and had all my sacraments done there. I didn’t think that was important till I watched my best friend walk down that aisle and I said, “I have to walk down the same aisle as Trish.” They were just finished with major renovations but they still did my wedding and to me, it was beautiful. Just to get married in the same church you’ve done everything in is so meaningful. My priest came back to do my wedding and his homily struck a chord with everyone. We were very emotional up on that altar and he had a way of making you feel like you didn’t need to think, you just needed to feel.

.

The music minister and singers of St. William’s are just amazing. The trumpet player they get is outstanding and does everybody’s weddings.

We come from public service family; my father, my husband’s father and grandfather and now my husband were/are all volunteer firefighters, so I wanted to honor this service by having a firetruck. During the homily the priest said, “Lisa, you came into this world with the bells and whistles of the fire truck and now you are doing it again?” It was a funny and touching moment, and I am glad that I got the truck there for them.

BAGPIPER:
Tim Grant, LIW Vendor, PiperTutor.com
Grade: A

He was amazing and it was such a nice touch.

DJ:
Energy Entertainment, 516-249-8844
Mark Cord, Owner and MC
Grade: A+

This was my best vendor hands down, which is why he gets the A+. I met Mark, the owner, at a Vanderbilt showcase and hit it off with him. I kept seeing him around at other showcases and finally brought my DH to see him. We liked him and booked him to be our MC and to have his Sinatra Singer.

Mark was amazing. He brought a drum set to my wedding, because “he felt like we needed it” – who does that? It was awesome. The DJ was on-point and accepted requests from our guests. We had everything from “Fireman Five” for my Dad, Elvis for the Moms, the “Safety Dance” for Frank’s friends and Shakira for me. I mean, seriously, it takes a talented DJ to make that work. We gave them a must-play list and they followed it. But I gave a caveat…feel the crowd…respond to what they want. And they did.

The Tarantella

The Sinatra singer was out of his world wonderful. I swooned. Literally.

We also had our Uncle sing a song or two, and our good friend sing “Con Te Partito” (he does this at every function and it’s great!). Because of Mark and his crew, our wedding wasn’t just a wedding, it was a PARTY!

Do you have a DJ yet? No? Then, don’t wait, go see Mark.

VENUE:
Floral Terrace, Floral Park
Grade: A

When we went to book at a place, we were treated quite well with most of the halls, but there weren’t that many who could accommodate our amount of guests. When I first looked at Floral Terrace, DH was so impressed. He grabbed my camera and started talking about how awesome our wedding would be there!! (Enthusiasm from men is hard to get in wedding planning!) I liked Marianne and she seemed to want to save us money and do right by us. They did a tasting with us and the food was great – plus there was a wedding going on, so it was fun to see that. We negotiated a good rate and they were helpful every time I came by for a payment.

Wedding Day:
We arrived a bit later than we thought at the Floral Terrace, after taking pictures at the Old Wantagh Train Station (thank you mother nature!) and seeing Marianne’s face as I walked off that bus was amazing. After all this time, she was so excited to see me.

They were attentive to me, took care of my guests and kept me informed. As someone who plans events for a living, it was important for me to feel like I knew what was going on around me, what will be taking place, but not being annoyed for little details. The staff at the Floral Terrace handles this perfectly.

I love that the Floral Terrace used to be an old movie theatre and that even some of my guests had gone to see movies there as young kids (one even worked there!). I fell in love with the gold ceilings and the “Old Hollywood” atmosphere. The place wowed my guests and really impressed the Jersey crowd. Many guests came early and they took care of them, even setting out food early downstairs in the “greeting room.” We had 270 guests, so it was a zoo! Our bridal suite was awesome and it ended up becoming a mini-cocktail hour with all of the food that was downstairs. I ended up not going to cocktail hour because there was no need…And in the end, I am glad because I made my “big entrance” at the reception.

The night was run perfectly; they are very good at event planning at the Floral Terrace. They walked us through the cocktail hour room and I asked (ever the event planner, I am), if I could have my signature drinks already made on the bar. The bartender replied, “I was just about to do that!” I had coasters made with the recipe and named it after my new married name. The guests loved that!

The food was out of this world.

The appetizer of mozzarella and tomato was fresh and good for the 80% Italians in the house. The salad was crisp. The intermezzo was lemon sorbet, which they handed out in small ice cream cones (what a hit!). Lastly, they bring you hot towels to clean your hands and my guests loved that (so did I!). For dinner, we had surf and turf, salmon, veal, and chicken. They brought Frank and me a platter of all the courses and we tried the salmon – which was tasty. They serve seconds and I was “that” bride that ate 3 lobster tails at her own wedding. Whatever, I am so proud to have eaten that night and it just melted in my mouth!

My cake was the exact replica of Denise’s (pizz0306) cake and my guests couldn’t believe a chocolate wedding cake; “How DIFFERENT!” they exclaimed! I loved how it looked, it matched with my fleur di lis and it tasted delicious. Yes, once again, I did eat the cake (Hey, I didn’t eat cake for two years before this!).

The Viennese Hour was scrumptious and the guests were floored. It was great, because it added to my reception and I am glad I had extra time with my guests! All I wanted was a snow cone – and boy, did I get a snow cone! It was delish and refreshing. The chocolate fountain was to die for and a hit! Here are some of my favorite photos from the V-Hour:

I did have one negative experience and I did not like the outcome or the way it was handled during and after the event (thus no A+), but I will say that it is overshadowed by their overall performance that evening. I left for my honeymoon so happy with the job that the Floral Terrace did for our wedding. Overall, I am pleased and I recommend the Floral Terrace.

My Do-It-Yourself Projects

Programs
I made the programs myself using the same paper from the invitations, as well as the label from them. Again, everyone loved them!

Pew Bows
This is a shout-out to my girl Trish for making the original pew bows. I added a wooden straw heart and fake red/purple flowers to make them my own. Cheap and Awesome!

CD Favors
I had a guy on E-bay design and print CD’s with an image of the ceiling at the Floral Terrace. I got paperboard cases online (great quality) and used labels I ordered with my invites to make the package. I tied them with gold string and viola! I included a sheet with all the songs and they were various songs that played that night. People love them!

Table Names
I wanted to make it easy on the hall, so I still did table numbers, but on each of them I included a photo of us and a movie from the 40’s…just to help with my underlying theme. I got the frames at Ikea and they were great. I made the same style signs for the bathroom baskets. So, guess what, no one has ever told me that they liked the Table Name Frames…hmm….must be just a LIWeddings thing!

Cardbox
I didn’t do it myself, but I designed it with a gal from Ebay. The material matched the girls’ dresses perfectly. I was so impressed with it, but DH dropped all the cards out of them on our way out of the room at the end of the night! Oh well!

Bathroom Baskets
I loved them…the girl’s one was used, but no one really touched the men’s bathroom basket (it was a humidor!). Unfortunately, it got “misplaced” somewhere at the Floral Terrace, which is a shame cause I loved it!

Special Photo Table
I decided to do a table with a memorial candle for Frank’s father and photos of our parents and grandparents on their wedding days. I used that candle as our unity candle in church too. On the table, we also included our letter from the President and a special gift from a friend. The Floral Terrace put it on a table right behind us and so many people came to see it. It was such a nice touch! Now the photos are in our home and they mean so much to us!

Table Cameras
Grade: A

Simple advice, just do them. I have great couple shots and table shots only because of my table cameras. Hunting people down to get their copies of photos is not fun!

Honeymoon:
Celebrity Cruises
(www.celebrity.com)
12 Night Cruise out of Bayonne, NJ to Charleston SC, Bahamas, St. Martin, St. Thomas and Puerto Rico
Grade: A

We had no idea where to go for our honeymoon. The weather wasn’t the perfect climate for our first wish, Italy, so we looked into other options. Since we live in Jersey, this was the best thing for us. It left out of Jersey the night after our wedding and was 12 nights long.

There were mostly old people on the ship but we were treated royally. Everyone was so happy to talk to us – we literally became the Celebrity Couple on the ship. Everywhere we went they would say, “There goes the Newlyweds!”

We ended up winning the “Newlywed, Not So Newlywed” game and it was played on the TV for the remainder of the cruise. Then we REALLY got famous. If you know me, this was heaven.

The food is to die for, the service is impeccable. If you asked for something, consider it done. I ended up surprising my husband with an upgraded room (courtesy of them) and we loved the balcony. For your honeymoon, splurge on the balcony. I highly HIGHLY recommend Celebrity Cruises to anyone….for any reason.

OTHER:

Leese “The Wedding Planner”
Grade: A+ of course!

Ok, in all seriousness, I post this because I was worried about not getting a DOC and a lot of you have doubts – Should I get one? Should I not get one? And I was one of those brides who wasn’t sure. I ended up not getting a DOC and I did a great job. I plan events and do public relations so I am good with party planning (tap on my shoulder) but even without that, I liked that I had full control of my wedding and wedding day.

However, here is my caveat…there are things that will occur the day before and the day of your wedding that will need your attention. If you are not someone who can handle answering a question (or don’t want to be bothered), then maybe you should get someone to handle those questions. There are a couple of things that I wish (for my DH’s sake) he didn’t have to deal with (i.e. the Limo and Tux problems) and having someone else besides me would have been good.

But that said, I did a fine job and I am here to say that you don’t need a DOC necessarily. It’s like a chocolate fountain, IMO…makes it sweeter, but not crucial!

Husband
Grade: A++++++++++

My husband gave me the most romantic proposal…in New York City – the site of our first date. We saw the Producers and then went to Little Italy for dinner --- after I was full of wine and calamari, he pulled out the most gorgeous princess cut diamond with trillion side stones engagement ring. I cried for five days. I love him for it. He stood beside me as I planned this wedding and allowed me to express my personality. Plus, he didn’t make fun of me about LIWeddings… well, not too much.

Parents and Brother
Grade: A++++++

Wow, I know that they probably won’t see this, but I have to say that I love them so much for being there for me. My mom, especially, spent the last year helping me and guiding me to the right decisions for this wedding. Every vendor I picked, she approved of – and without her opinion and assistance, I couldn’t had done it. I guess the reason why I am telling you all this is that I feel like you should remember that this is an emotional and wonderful time for your family. I miss them everyday and love them so much more for putting up with me. Kiss your family today!

Trish, how can I describe our friendship to the Internet world…you are the sister I always wanted and I am so glad that you are in my life and thank you for everything you did to make the day wonderful! Now…it’s time for the next phase of our lives!

LI Weddings.com
Grade A++++

I’ll treasure the countless hours I spent on here as a BRIDE. Thank you Ron and Liz for providing this place and dealing with our craziness.

My friends online
To the 06’ers and other special friends: You rock and I am so glad to have found you. You are all beautiful inside and out and your husbands (or fiancés) are lucky to have you

PrincessConsuela: You have been so wonderful to me and I appreciate having you be apart of this time in my life. You are a great gal and will cherish all our time together!

Kristen (kissy27): Your ears must be throbbing (or maybe eyes too) because you have heard every complaint that I had…and gave great advice. You are wonderful person and I am glad to have you in my life! I hope our bond lasts forever!

PARTING ADVICE

SWEAT the small stuff
As Rudy Giuliani says in his book Leadership , “Always Sweat The Small Stuff.” I totally agree. This is the biggest event of your life so far. You will be anxious and nervous and want everything perfect. You will stress over weather and over your fiancé’s bachelor party. So put your time and effort into doing all the little things to make everything come together perfectly. So many people have told me that they have never seen a wedding planned so well. When a friend was worried about how to get back to the hotel before the reception, they looked in the church program and were so happy to see that I put in reverse directions! Other people couldn’t get over how I tied everything together and made my wedding “beautiful” and most importantly, “different.” Girls forget what others say and sweat the small stuff . You’ll be glad you did.

But…Remember…Life happens when you aren’t looking.
You spend a year or so planning a wedding, but life is out there. Enjoy the special time between “engaged” and “married” – it’s a wonderfully romantic time. I made sure to do special things, to talk about life outside of your wedding, and enjoy the person I was about to pledge my life to. I am so glad I did.

Lastly…
After the stress comes off you and you are ready to party at the reception…soak it in. Eat as many lobster tails as you want. Dip some marshmallows into that chocolate fountain that you saved for; that you sacrificed for. Dance with your husband and steal as many kisses as you want. Remember, your guests will have a good time…if YOU are having a good time. You’ve done your best and it’s time to let the stress go and allow the fun to begin.

God Bless You All On Your New Marriages!

Love,
Mrs. Leese
06’er till the end!

FABULOUS review!!! I just met with Yelena at Signature this weekend - glad to hear your positive thoughts on her (she was a little unprofesh at our meeting - glad to hear you loved her!).

Your pics are amazing...you were a stunning bride. I think I am copying your cake

Everything is gorgeos - I am FMing you to find out how to make gorgeous programs like yours...I am getting my invites from notfromabox.com too!

CONGRATS!!!
