My 2/5/05 Wedding at Chateau La Mer

I’m not normally a crazy big poster on LIW, but I find the reviews to be extremely helpful, so I wrote a lot. I hope this helps make the planning process less stressful for other brides. We got very lucky and had a gorgeous day, Feb. 5. It was sunny, about 50 degrees, and there was still snow on the ground for pictures.

Bridal Shower – Pomodorino’s, Hauppauge – A++
It was more than I ever could have asked for!!! The girls, my mom and my aunt did so much, I was overwhelmed. I had asked for something very different from the winter wonderland wedding. So, in the summer, they gave me a garden theme in the open Garden Room at Pomodorino’s—and it was a gorgeous day to have the open room. The food was very good and the cupcake cake from Torto Fino bakery was amazing (the cupcakes were huge, nicely decorated and very moist!). They did the toilet paper bride game, which was very funny! It was just so perfect…I can’t ever thank them enough for making it so special. I know there were a lot of glue gun burns and I really appreciate it!

Bachelorette Party – A++
My incredible girls surprised with an overnight trip to Atlantic City. They rented an Expedition and 9 of us drove there. We stayed at the Sands, ate at Tun Tavern and partied at the Borgata. It was a great time, complete with chocolate peenies.

Rehearsal Dinner – The Riverview – A
We love this place, especially the lobster bisque. We had the semi-private Tea Room with two burning fireplaces. The people were very nice, but we had one spillage and the refill service was slow. The food was very good and overall we were happy with our choice. They also have a nice bar with live music almost every Friday and Saturday, which makes it a nice place to hang afterwards.

Bridal Party Gifts
We got several things here and there, but the one thing I really wanted to comment on was the Groomsmen’s gifts:

Supreme Trophies Inc, 608 Walt Whitman Rd, Melville – A+
We bought the Groomsmen 500pc poker chip sets and wanted to put their names somewhere on the case. First, we went to Things Remembered looking for plaques. What a rip off!!!!! It was $20 just for the plaque, then $6 a word, so it would have cost $40 a gift for the names!!!! So we went to this Trophy shop. The guy was really nice and for $12 a plaque, he would do any color or style and engrave whatever you want without additional cost. We show up a week later to pick them up and when we walk in he says, “Hey, there’s the couple getting married. I have a wedding present for you. Do you have a poker set too?” DH does. He had made a plaque for my DH to put on his set too!! The guy was great and the price/quality was excellent. If you have a gift you bought on your own and you want some type of engraving added, I highly recommend them. They have all kinds of tapes and foams to stick things in different surfaces.

Invitations – Rexcraft.com -- A+
I was very happy with my experience and final product from them. The ordering process was very easy and allows you to see a draft of what you’re ordering before you finalize the order. Also, when I did e-mail a question, customer service got back to me right away. It took 7 days from when I placed my order to when they arrived.

Favors –
1) Bottle stoppers – A
http://www.discountweddingfavors.com/
Got the stoppers for a great price and received them a week after I ordered.
2) Shot Glasses – A
http://www.discountmugs.com/
Were very helpful and had a decent selection of graphics. I ordered, got a proof of the design and had them in my hands in 2 weeks. The quality was good and they were packed well and there were no broken glasses.

Rings – Elegant Jewelry, Inc. (Attias Flea market) – A+
They were great to work with and our rings came out beautiful. I was a little worried again at first because we ordered them at the beginning of December, and with Christmas and all, I thought they would take a long time to come in. They only took a week to be made and two days to get engraved. DH and several of his friends have bought big items there and have all been very happy.

Shoes/Jewelry – Sandy’s Shoes (on Sunrise highway) – A+
Went to a few shoe places before this. I thought they had a good selection. All the people at Sandy’s were pleasant and helpful with finding the right size and padding the bottom. I also brought some old dyeables there to be dyed black and they did a great job. I also saw a necklace I fell in love with there. I wasn’t sure it would go with the dress, but the girl there told me to come back for it before the fitting and see how it looked. I loved it. Many people commented on my necklace during the night.

Mary’s Corsetiere – Big Fat F
I went to Mary’s because everyone raves about how well they know their stuff over there. I was very worried about my undergarments because I have a descent size chest and my dress was strapless with a very low back. I brought pictures of me in the dress when I went. I waited close to 2hrs to be helped and while I was there, the guy behind the counter was very nasty to the customers. The woman fitted me, told me what size I was, brought in a corset and showed me how to put it on. I explained that I was concerned it wasn’t low enough and she said to trust her it was and if it wasn’t, then to bring it back and they would fix it. I explained I was concerned that it was pinching a lot of skin on my back and I’d have rolls of flab and she told me the dress was supposed to cover that up. I had minor alteration done while I was there so it was nonrefundable. I go to my fitting and the bra is about 2.5inches higher than the back of my dress! I take it back and show them pictures of the fitting and ask them to fix it. They want to charge me like $40 in alterations! NO WAY! You told me you would fix it!!!!! She says I was putting it on wrong an even insinuated I gained weight so it wasn’t fitting right. She shows me again how to put it on and I said I didn’t think it would work but I take it back to my dress and give it another try. To get it low enough in the back, I was falling out the top. When we took it off and looked at the tag, she had given me a whole cup size bigger than she said I was!!!! I knew they would never help me if I went back, so my mother ate the cost and was nice enough to buy me another one that fit the way it was supposed to from my seamstress. They get away with a lot there because they’re supposedly the best and they think they are, so it’s very hard to argue with them. I’m not saying don’t go there, but I have some words of advice; if you can’t take your dress there, don’t get alterations done until you have taken it home and tried it on with the dress!
PS After this my mom went to Georgette’s in Hicksville for her undergarments and was extremely happy!

Dress/Bridesmaid Dresses/Jackets/Tiara/Alterations – Phyllis Limmer at Brides Made – A
Two of the girls in my bridal party used Phyllis for their weddings also.
I ordered my Tiara through her and when one of the stones fell out, she didn’t fix it—she ordered me a brand new one! When my corset from Mary’s stunk, I tried on one of the ones she had there—it was perfect and half the price! She attached little circles in the back of my tiara and my flower girl’s so that we’d be better able to get bobby pins in. She ordered bridesmaid dresses cheaper and my dress for $300 cheaper than the salons wanted. She made jackets for the girls, which I had wanted in velvet but were kind of expensive so I decided on satin. Then she had extra velvet from another job and made them for me in velvet for the same price as the satin. She did the alterations on my mom’s dress, which looked great on her when she was done. Her alterations are also less than you’d pay at a bridal salon. I was happy with my dress and loved my bustle. She put boning in the inside of the dress that I would tuck into the corset so that the dress would never fall below and expose my undergarments. This was especially helpful when the fabric stretched by the end of the night and it was looser on top when I was dancing. She’s a very nice lady and can order you a million different things at a cheaper price.

Tuxedos – Roger’s Tuxedos – A-
We picked this store because DH used them in two other wedding parties and was very happy. They are a little more expensive than other places, but they have their entire inventory on the premises, so if there’s a problem, they can take care of it immediately. There were some minor things that the guys had fixed while they were there and they sent a wrong vest with DH who turned right back around and had it corrected, but overall, they were good.

Make up – Jillian from Gorgeous Faces – A+
Jillian is such a sweetheart and did an amazing job. I thought everyone looked great and even if they wanted to change their eye shadow a bit or their lipstick, she was very accommodating. I loved my make up and my fake lashes. Unfortunately, DH really didn’t like the fake lashes, even though several people said they made my eyes really pop. I had my make up on from 9am-4am (19 hours) and I didn’t shine or smudge at all!

Hair – Jenn the Hair Genie – A++
Jenn was more than just my hair stylist. Several times when I posted about things that had nothing to do with hair, she responded to me with websites and advice. She did an awesome job and is another great person to have around the morning of. She even made my mom happy, which is very hard to do!!!

Pictures – Dowling College, Vanderbilt Mansion – A+
Dowling was really nice and easy to deal with. You have to be an alumnus now to use the location, and luckily I got my Masters through them, because we couldn’t find anyplace indoors that we were happy with. All they asked for was a $100 donation to the scholarship fund. I was allowed to use all the rooms and grounds. They called me after the big snowstorm to let me know I could still use anything, but they weren’t going to shovel for me. I turned out to have a gorgeous day where I didn’t even need to wear my jacket the whole time. There was still enough snow on the ground for pictures, but it had melted enough that we could get around all right. The place was really nice and we got lots of pictures everywhere. They have a large winding staircase in the Foyer with stained glass behind it. This is where I made my entrance and saw DH for the first time—I can’t wait to see the pictures. I’m very happy we went here.

Signing Platter –
http://www.weddinganniversarygifts.net/wedding_guest_books/index.shtml -- A-
One of my bridesmaids had gotten a guest book platter for her wedding and it looked great, so I decided it was one of the many things I needed (thanks Tammy!). Like many other things, I ordered it at the beginning of December and I was worried with Christmas it would take forever. It took one week to ship the plate, even with it being hand painted. Another great thing was that they normally charge another $50 for custom artwork, but they waived it for me because the design was simple. It came out nice (a little cartoony, but that’s what all their stuff looks like). But the design was larger on the plate than I expected. We were worried that the platter was already small looking for supposedly being able to accommodate 200 signatures on top of the large artwork, and that there wouldn’t be enough room. Turned out that about half the guests signed the platter and there was definitely room for more, but not much. The design doesn’t really stand out on the platter now that it’s filled, but overall, I’m happy. A guestbook would collect dust in a closet for the next 50 years, but I can put this up in my china cabinet.

Officiant – Pastor Mike Cassara – A++
This man is very nice and extremely organized. He gave a packet filled with readings, vows and possible extras for the ceremony that we could choose from. He gave us a complete copy of his standard ceremony and asked us to go through it and mark up what we liked and didn’t. When I e-mailed him all my notes, he sent back a revised copy of exactly what our ceremony would be. We gave him our marriage license a week before the wedding. He likes to have it to bring to make sure that we don’t forget it on the day of. He showed up about 45min before the ceremony to go over everything with everyone and helped get us organized when we were a little all over the place. He was loud and clear and spoke well at the ceremony. A lot of people throughout the night said they really liked the ceremony. He must have immediately mailed out the signed license after the wedding, because our marriage certificate from the town clerk was already sitting at the house when we got back from our honeymoon. I’m very happy we were married by Pastor Mike.

Ceremony Microphone – Unlimited Entertainment DJ – A+
I just wanted to give a big thank you to these guys who weren’t our DJ, but are the house DJ for CLM. They were setting up for a party when we were having our rehearsal the night before at CLM. We weren’t worried about anyone hearing the pastor, but during the rehearsal it seemed like people might have trouble hearing our readers. So, the DJ offered to leave a mic and an amp behind that night after the party for us to use during the ceremony. This worked out great and was really nice and the guys wouldn’t even take a tip. Thanks!

Ceremony/Cocktail Hour Music – Ensemble Champlain – A++
They also played at my friends wedding, but with two substitute players—and they still sounded wonderful. They sounded beautiful during the ceremony and many people commented on what a nice touch they were. They also played during cocktail hour, but like I’ve read happens at most cocktail hours, only half the room could hear them. There’s just so much talking going on in the big room, it’s hard to hear. But when I went over to get food and was online and as I was walking around I did hear them and they were great. They are very talented and the lowest priced trio (flute, cello and violin) I contacted. I was very happy with them.

Photography – Artisan Photo Group
Before seeing photos -- A+
After seeing photos -- TBD
“Let’s get one for the love! Let’s get a few more for happiness”
The photographs and video were very important to us and we went to 7 photographers before picking one that did great work, had great packages to choose from, was very flexible and had a great personality. Chuck gave us everything we wanted and more. We had Chuck as the main photographer and Dennis, a wonderful bonus, do only black and whites. We also got to see these guys in action 2 months before our wedding when they did our friends wedding. I gave them a list of the types of photos I was looking for and they had the list with them the day of the wedding and would stop and be like, “Wait! This is perfect for a list photo.” They were great to work with the day of the wedding and I can’t wait to see my photos!

Videography – Artisan Photo Group – TBD
The videography was also a nice guy and I can’t wait to see that too!

DJ – High Voltage Sounds – B+
This is a hard one to rate. I’m not really sure what to give. Overall I was happy, but there were some things that bothered me. We got the simple package with just a DJ, thinking we had a big party/dance crowd, and I didn’t give him a big play list—just like six songs we really wanted to hear, so he could do his job. Before we entered the reception, Vinny came out to make sure he said our name right. We said it multiple times. He still said it wrong when we entered. The first half of the night was dead. While we tried to do our rounds at the tables, there was hardly anyone on the dance floor. Now, I wasn’t really paying attention to what he was playing, but a couple people said they did not like his choices. I don’t know if the music would have mattered though, because no one was in their seat because everyone was up and talking or at the bar. It wasn’t like everyone was sitting and bored. Most of the people at the wedding hadn’t seen other people in so long and enjoyed talking to them. Finally, after dinner, DH and I started dancing and people came out on the dance floor and Vinny played my requests and the perfect songs for our group. Perhaps if I could do it again, I would have gotten and MC, but I don’t know if it would have made a difference—that’s just the way the night went and people were happy. The only other thing that he didn’t do was he never did the centerpiece giveaway. I had a good time and perhaps if I had danced more in the beginning, more people would have danced then….who knows.

1st Florist – *********** -- BIG FAT F
This was a heartbreaking and stressful experience. I’m not going into detail because I don’t want my post deleted again, but if you’d like to know, please FM me. I cancelled with him a month before my wedding.

I would just like to give a very big thank you to two florists in particular who tried to help me on my now very restricted budget and last minute scrambling. Trina from Expressions Floral and Lynn from Florisan LLC are both incredible sweethearts. I’m sorry I couldn’t use them both.

2nd Florist – Expressions Floral Design, Trina -- B
I would like to thank Trina for helping us out with a very small budget and basically about 2 weeks to figure everything out. I wish everything had happened sooner, because it was hard to find some items on such short notice. Unfortunately, we couldn’t do everything I was supposed to get originally, but your guests never know these things, and overall, it turned out all right.

Limos – Cruise Control – A++
We had 3 limos before the wedding; an Escalade picked up the guys, a 14 passenger Lincoln picked up myself and the girls and then went all over the place picking up DHs family, and an 8 passenger Lincoln that picked up my family. All the divers were at least 15min early and were very nice and helpful. I had printed out directions for them all, and not one of them needed it—they all knew exactly where they were going for all of our 6 million stops. The cars were clean and stocked. The 14 and 8 passenger cars and a town car came and picked everyone up after the wedding and were again early. We made them wait awhile because we were a bit disorganized getting together at the end of the night which I don’t think they really appreciated, but everything was good and our driver was nice enough to stop at 7-11 for us late at night. There were absolutely no worries with this company. Another reason we chose them was because they keep their fleet indoors so they’re kept in better condition.

Cake – Black Forest Bakery (Tom) -- C
I had found a picture of a different cake on LIW over a year ago. I sent the picture to a couple bakeries for prices and, oh my, it was expensive. I brought the picture down to Black Forest because they are CLMs bakery. Tom was agreeable to doing my variations on the cake to make it doable for an affordable price. I was disappointed in what I paid extra for. The shape of the cake—the curvature of the staircase—was the most important aspect of it. The cake didn’t curve—and being lopsided doesn’t count. It went straight back—but the banister pieces were placed retardedly on the cake as if it did have a different shape. The most annoying part of the whole thing was that one of the wooden dowels that holds up the different layers was sticking through the front of the top layer of the cake! I mentioned this at CLM and one of the guys said he’d try to do something. They moved my cake topper to try and cover it, but the thing was then up there crooked. I was pretty calm the day of the wedding and wasn’t freaking out about it. I was just disappointed when I saw the cake because DH and I really liked the one in the picture. People mentioned the cake was lopsided and yes, you can see the dowel sticking up under the crooked cake topper in the amateur pics we’ve gotten so far.

Odds and Ends – Me A+++++
I like arts and crafts, so I gave myself a bunch of projects to do throughout the year before my wedding. I made my STD magnets, card cake, table numbers, pinecone/wreath votives, pew bows, rose cones, rose cone and flower girl baskets and bouquet crystals.

Ceremony/Reception - Chateau La Mer – A+++++++
DH and I have been to many weddings and visited many other halls in making our decision. It came down to CLM and another place. We chose CLM because we liked the Atrium room and because we were told, about 16 months before the wedding, that they were building a new chapel downstairs and were putting in an elevator. These were two big items during our search because, since we were getting married at the hall, we wanted our ceremony in a different room so it felt like a “chapel” and because DHs grandmother can’t do stairs and would have needed an elevator. Another big reason we picked this hall was because of our BM, Nick. At several places we went to check out, we were totally taken for granted. One hall made us wait over and hour to speak with someone, when we had an appointment, and left us sitting there with no idea what was going on. When we went to CLM to visit, there were 2 other couples being shown around at the same time. Nick handled all three couples at the same time without anyone feeling neglected. He would run up to us and ask us if we wanted a drink and gave us a menu to look over while he ran over to another couple and did something with them. And he never left us sitting alone for more than 5 min. He was really nice and we thought, if this guy can handle this well, he can handle anything on our wedding day.

Six months before the wedding, lots of renovations had been done on the hall, but still no chapel or elevator.
Yes, we were very disappointed.
Yes, we considered switching halls.

The owner, George, and our BM, Nick, kept assuring us everything would work out and they would take care of us, so we stuck with it. Picking and staying with CLM turned out to be the best decision we made throughout the whole planning process. We wanted to have out rehearsal the night before the wedding, a Friday. CLM won’t do rehearsals then because of parties that night. But when I asked, because most of our OOT people weren’t coming in till Friday, Nick was nice enough to let us come. He got everyone a drink when they arrived and played the part of the pastor so we could get out of there right before a 21st birthday party was starting in that room.

At the rehearsal, Nick said he had a surprise for me the next day. When we went to do our menu in January, they had had snowflakes hanging from the ceiling in the Lobby. I asked if they’d be there in February and he said no. When we showed up the day of the wedding, Nick had hung all the snowflakes in the hall again to go with our winter wonderland theme.

Nick made sure everyone was comfortable and had a drink form the moment we arrived. Our bridal party and parents commented on how they couldn’t believe how attentive he was and anytime during the night someone needed something or something happened, he was there instantly. I also have to say that this was true for Monika, my bridal attendant. Everywhere I went, she was right behind me. Most of the time I didn’t even know she was there until I’d go for something and she’d be right by my side asking what I needed. And the poor girl—we took pictures outside on the deck and it was nice, but chilly then as the sun was going down. She stood next to me out there to help me and was freezing. I told her to go inside and she said no, this was her job. During cocktail hour, she took DH and me upstairs and said, “I noticed you aren’t really eating anything. Tell me what you want and I’ll go get you food and you can eat it up here where no one will bother you for 10min.” The food was very good!!! We had the seafood added to the cocktail hour, but only the crab legs, lobster and shrimp. Soooooo worth it!!! The crab legs were huge, already half cracked for the guests and sooooo good! They did an ice sculpture for us in the shape of a snowflake too! Dinner and the rest of the night were great. The bartenders were awesome too.

Now, in the beginning, I didn’t want Viennese hour and DH did. We fought about it and then we wound up getting it anyway. I was soooo wrong about this. This was the highlight of the night. They threw in the chocolate fountain, which many of our guests had never seen before. They also had the cordial bar and passed mocha chinos which went over well. I hear there was some kind of chocolate fight at the fountain later and we saw people with chocolate all over them (drunk and didn’t care and were having a great time) and lots of our cards had chocolate finger prints all over them J. I hope someone got pictures of it.

Through the whole process, even when we were upset, CLM and all the people there were nothing short of great. Every time I was looking for something or had a problem, Nick was there. When I was thinking of doing table runners and couldn’t find a company I was happy with, he called around and found me one that was exactly what I was looking for (though in the end, I never got to do them). Everything worked out perfectly and I’m way happier that it happened this way than if I’d had the chapel. And the extra hour with Viennese was so worth it because the night just goes so fast…

Hilton Garden Inn Ronkonkoma – Night before and night of wedding – A
I got a suite here for the girls, my mom, my aunt and I to get ready in. They have a nice lobby with a double sided fireplace that I thought would be good for pictures and it’s only 10min away from Dowling, where we were going after. We also stayed there, for only and hour LOL, the night of the wedding. We had to be at McArthur (only 2min away from there) at 6am for our flight. The Hilton gave us a shuttle ride to the airport so I could leave my car there and not have to pay parking at the airport, and they picked us up when we got back. Overall, a good experience.

Holiday Inn – Some guests the night of the wedding – C
Like 4 days before the wedding, some people were going to stay near us so that we could have an after party since DH and I weren’t going to bother to go to sleep that night so we’d just sleep on the flight. The Holiday Inn was down the block form the Hilton and had a big, popular bar. They said they’d keep it open for us. We called when we were on our way there and the place was already closed. We drank in the lobby, but it wasn’t the same. They also gave DH a hard time about canceling one of the rooms and getting the money back for it.

Honeymoon – Aruba, Marriot Renaissance – A
When I was researching hotels in Aruba, it came down to the Renaissance and the Radisson. I chose the Renaissance because it was in the heart of the city and easy to walk to lots of things. We visited the Radisson, and while a very nice hotel, I’m glad we stayed where we did. We could easily walk to like 15 major restaurants and bars, 2 casinos and the big mall. There are huge Iguanas all over the Renaissance that they don’t have at the other hotels, only baby ones. They just walk up to you while you’re sitting at the pool. They’re also at the private island with flamingos. We rented a little Suzuki type jeep and went through the desert and most of the major attractions on the island—you can do this all in one day and not even be rushed. I recommend doing this and one of the drinking bus tours. My favorite dinner was at the Flying Fishbone. El Gauchos was good too. Have dinner at Carlos and Charlie’s if you want to be embarrassed—they can smell newlyweds a mile away. The submarine was OK, but you can see the same things from the glass bottom boat at half the price. Food and drink are expensive here. Overall, a good vacation, but 7 days was too much for people who don’t bake and sleep next to the pool all day long. There was also a crash at the airport when we were leaving and our flight was cancelled. People couldn’t find anywhere on the island to stay because they were booked. A cabby found us a ghetto motel to stay at. It was an interesting experience. I would also suggest not going right after Carnival. The island was dead by 11pm and we were thinking this might be because people party hard for the two weeks leading up to this and then are partied out.

Some Thoughts –

FH and I opened a joint account after we got engaged and had part of our paychecks direct deposited in every week for 14 months. This was the best thing we did. We were able to pay for most of the wedding costs out of this account. The first paycheck or two we got with the new amount was a shock, but it was the best thing we did. There was no stress or loans needed in the end.

It’s no joke, the day flies by. While people have said to me this is rude, if I could do it again, I would not have gone around to the tables to say hi. We never even made it to all the tables and I spent more then half the night standing around when I could have been drinking and dancing. I wish I had partied more and danced with more people.

I got very lucky and had no disasters the day of the wedding, even though once or twice I was a bit disappointed in a vendor. Overall it was a good day and I think I remained pretty calm and tried to take it all in. Try and let these things you no longer have any control over slide off your shoulders. There’s just no point in letting them get to you then. Thank goodness, the only times I really needed to catch my breath were when that was supposed to happen—right before I saw DH and right before I walked down the aisle. Have a good time and enjoy!

Happy Planning!

Aww you looked so gorgeous. Everything looked wonderful in the pics, including the cake, even though it wasnt what you wanted.

Re: My 2/5/05 Wedding at Chateau La Mer

Thanks Ladies! I don't really have many other clear pictures. It's so hard to take them at the halls when they're dark. I have another that shows the bay frozen and another of the centerpeice.
