My 4/30/06 Review!!! Jericho Terrace, LA Blossom, FM Ent., Rev. Deb, Jenn, Oksana, Timeless Treasures, Royalty, Christina Bohn, etc. UPDATED WITH MORE STUFF & WITH TONS OF PROOFS!!
I tend to be long winded, so I apologize in advance. My HM review was long, so of course this will not be short, either!!!! But I prefer to be as detailed as possible.First and foremost, I want to thank Ron, Liz and everyone on LIW who has helped me tremendously with my wedding planning. There is no way I could have planned this wedding and maintained my sanity without all of you. This website is an amazing resource of valuable information and full of absolutely incredible women. I sincerely thank you all from the bottom of my heart.
My advice to future brides: The last month before the wedding, stop stressing the small stuff. At that point you have done pretty much all that you can do. Nothing anyone can say or do will change the fact that you are getting married.
I would also tell you to enjoy yourself as much as you can. We made our rounds during the CH, so that we had the entire reception to just dance, party and enjoy ourselves. We are both so glad that we did this, because it goes by so fast.
My next advice is if you have any doubts whatsoever about anything, whether it be your florist or your choice in BM, change it!!! You will be so much more happy if you do. There is nothing worse than accepting being unhappy about something when you could have done something to prevent it. The day of the wedding I was blessed with a gorgeous sunny day with 65 degrees. It could not have been a better day except for the b!tching I got from some in my bridal party.
Let me put it to you this way, this picture pretty much sums up how the early part of the morning went while getting ready:
I will start in no particular order than to just list the things as they come to my head.
Bridal Gown: CT2102 by Moonlight, store: Lestan's in Brooklyn - BIG FAT F!! If there was a grade lower I would give it!
My experience here was screwed up from day one. Most of you know the story of my being forced into getting my wedding gown by my parents. If not, I'll give the basic rundown. I went to Brooklyn because it was close to my parents, and my mother being sick with 2 types of cancer, she does not like to drive far. We went into Lestans, found a dress my mother loved and I admitted looked good on me. I told my mother it was more than I was willing to spend, but let me try to find it closer to home, because the salespeople were awful. The woman had thrown her hands up and walked away from me the second she heard I didn't have enough for a deposit. By the time I got back upstairs, the deposit was paid by my father. I was stuck. That was only the beginning.
When my gown finally came in, I realized that I had fallen in love it. When I went to the shop, they gave me a hard time about trying it on. The saleswoman basically helped me into it, and then walked away!!! I had to send my fellow LIW bride to find her to help me get out of it!! When I went shopping there looking for my BM dresses, we were there for almost an hour trying on dresses before anyone helped us. And that was WITH an appt. Then, when I took my dress out of there and brought it to Phyllis at Gownfind, the dress was butchered so bad that she had asked me if they sold me a floor sample!!! I had paid $150 for a hollow to hem that was never done. The dress was only shortened in the front, the sides were still 3' too long. The netting underneath looked like it had been ripped off, cut and sewn back any which way. The skirt was off center. The straps that hang the dress were twisted and dirty. I was absolutely livid. I went back and complained, and they blamed it on the designer, saying they must have done it. But every other salon I spoke to said it sounded like something that was done by the salon, that a designer would never let a dress leave their facility like that. I have since filed a complaint with the Better Business Bureau and intend on filing a claim in Small Claims Court. But at the time I just wanted my dress fixed, so I will be fighting the rest of the battle in the very near future.
BM & FG Dresses: Jim Hjelm & US Angels - Store: Blanchee Boutique in Far Rockaway - B-
This is a very small shop. The owner Blanche is nice, but forgetful at times. The only reason they get a B- and not anything lower, is because the dresses came in a timely fashion, they were in perfect condition, and Blanche was super friendly. However, the first time we were all there, ordering was insane. There were 2 women there who outright lied to us about an alarm going off at 5pm so they were trying to rush us out. Then they had no clue what the hell they were doing. They were freaking out about taking measurements and writing out the orders. Finally someone who had a clue helped us out. But it was unnecessary stress. Then when the dresses came in, I had asked if the girls could pay by credit card, since all of them would need to have the dresses shipped. She said fine. But when the time came, the girls were given a very hard time and were told they needed cash. It took 2 BMs to complain to me about this before I called and complained. Finally it was taken care of, but it shouldn't have come to that.
Travel Agent - In & Out Travel -B+
We were very close to booking the HM ourselves as we figured we could get a better deal. But with something as major as a HM, I was convinced by a lot of people to go through a travel agent. I met Dave at a showcase at JT, and called him the following week. We met with Ellen, and she was friendly and helpful even when I kept changing my mind a dozen times. The reason they get a B+ and not an A are because of minor issues that we had.
1. I had asked for my frequent flyer number to be put onto the reservation and it wasn't.
2. I had to ask about 3 times via phone and email to have our seats reserved on the flights and to get seats near the front. (She gave us the back and there were seats available by the front).
3. There was a package we were eligible for through our resort on the Secrets Resorts website, and I had to ask for it 3 times before it was put on our reservation.
4. The price dropped on our flights by about $300 each, but they said there was nothing they could do about it.
Like I said, these were all minor issues, and the first 3 I handled myself after the fact anyway. But these were things that should have been handled for us IMO.
Our HM review is posted here: HM Review of Secrets Excellence
Invitations - Now-And-Forever.com - A+
I loved these people!!! I found these claret invites that I fell in love with, and a price I could deal with!! I was beginning to get frustrated searching invite sites that had gorgeous invites with ridiculous prices. I wanted something traditional, but with something different. These suited me perfectly. The customer service people were always tremendously friendly, and even called me to tell me that the ink color I chose was not coming out right and asked if I wanted to switch it to another color. They could have just easily let the order go and not say anything. But they were great, and the turnaround time was super fast. (Less than a week). I would highly recommend this website for beautiful invites at afforable prices!!!
Customized Postage - Zazzle.com - A+
Everyone loved our customized stamps!!! They came out amazing, the quality was great, and the turn around time was very fast. We are still hearing from people how beautiful the postage was!! You end up paying almost double for the postage, but if you want an extra touch, these are great!!! They have other customized items as well, we may use them for our Thank You cards!!! Highly recommend them!!
Save the Dates - VistaPrint - A-
VistaPrint is great for most printing needs. I decided to just get a business card magnet and design it from there. They came fast, were super cheap when on sale ($2.95 for 50 magnets) and looked great. We got many compliments!! The - is because on some of the magnets there was a red line across the edge of the right hand side. It was on about 10 of them, and I'm not sure what it was, but it was there nonetheless. I could have complained about it, but for $2.95, I wasn't going to stress it.
Things I got off Ebay:
What DIDN'T I get off Ebay??!! It's like a free for all with bridal stuff!!! The commercials don't lie when they say whatever it is, you can find it on Ebay!!!
My gorgeous cake topper I got from seller 'enchantingdream'.
Yankee garter came from seller 'beegaboo'
My shoes I got for $15 from 'wedaccents'
My unity candle holder I got from seller 'kriskwi'

My letter opener favors I got for dirt cheap compared to wedding websites from 'designsbydena'

BM bracelets I got from 'Frank5260'
Silk rose petals for aisle from seller 'Efavormart'
Initial cake topper from 'Olddave100'
Rhinestones for cake topper from 'Rhinestoneshop'
There were also numerous other things I got off Ebay, but didn't end up using, such as a crinoline, tiara, veil, jewelry and other things.
Engagement ring: Lundstrom Jewelers, Smithhaven Mall - A+
We bought my engagement and plain wedding band here and they have been nothing short of spectacular in all of our dealings with them!!!

Wedding bands: Bailey, Banks & Biddle, Smithhaven Mall & Ice.com - A+
I managed to get my wedding band while not even looking during the time Bailey Banks & Biddle was closing its store. I was having a hard time matching a band with my e-ring, and even harder to find one that didn't have diamonds. I ended up with a ½ carat Scott Kay 3 diamond wedding band that matched with my e-ring and was on sale for 70% off the retail price. An absolute steal!!! (Although I should mention, when we came into the store looking for e-rings, one saleswoman was downright rude, however on my wedding band purchase, everyone was friendly.)

For his ring, we realized we needed something simple and yellow gold since he is fair skinned. Ice.com had this great 2 toned wedding band that he liked. I got approved over the phone, and the ring was in my possession the next day for a great price!! Ice.com rules, and I have managed to turn on a lot of other brides to this great website for all kinds of jewelry and their amazing payment plans!!! Highly recommend!!!

Tuxedos: After Hours, Smithhaven Mall & Staten Island Mall - B
We had 5 guys dealing with the Smithhaven location and 3 dealing with the Staten Island location. All said customer service was great and friendly. We had thankfully no problems with After Hours except for a one minor issue and one big issue.
1. Adjustments needed to be made on 3 guys when they picked up their tuxes.
2. My FIL's pants fell down to the floor during the hora. Thankfully, we managed to get some safety pins to keep him together, but it kept him from dancing the night away.
Other than this, I would recommend them, I would just suggest making sure the guys really test their tuxes when they pick them up in the store!!!

DIY projects:
Our photo cube - I followed directions from the DIY thread. I got the supplies from various stores to construct it. I posted the instructions somewhere on a thread when I was asked about it. All of the supplies were bought at Michaels, except for the L brackets which were bought at Home Depot and the fabric was bought at Fabric Bonanza which has since closed down.

You can see the photo cube on the day of in this picture:

Placecards, Programs, Table numbers - There were a pain in the butt, but well worth it. Took a lot of tinkering in Word and many trips to Michaels and AC Moore to get things right. The placecards I printed on white cardstock using a label template, and then printed the names onto vellum to overlay it. I then glued the vellum onto the cardsrtock. Sorry I have no pics of the placecards.
I bought different colored 8 x 11 cardstock and printed it directly on it for the programs.

We used a B&W picture of our cat as our table numbers, because we call her our 'daughter'. Everyone liked this personal touch, and my mother liked it so much, she took the table number from my parents table home with her!!

Initial cake topper with rhinestones - The biggest pain of all, but when I saw it on our cake, I wanted to cry. I got all of the supplies from Ebay. But don't make the same mistake I did, I bought really small rhinestones by mistake, so when it was all said and done, I had nearly 1000 rhinestones on the cake topper!!!

Slipper basket - This was a pain in the arse as well, but it was well worth it. The slipper basket got ransackedI have maybe 12 slippers left out of the 40 I bought. I used the silver wine bags you get in the liquor store, since I figured people were just going to take the slippers out of the bag anyway. Total cost for 40 bags? $4.00.

Mrs. Hoodie - Target & EmbroidMe on Rte. 111 in Smithtown
I never saw the point of spending $65 - $110 on something you only get to wear before the wedding and not after. So because of that, instead of getting 'Soon to be Mrs. xxx' I got 'Mrs. xxx Est. April 30, 2006. This way I was able to wear it before and after the wedding.
I bought the hoodie at Target for $15, and then took it to Embroid Me on Rte. 111 in Smithtown and the cost was $15. So total expense was $30, a lot cheaper than buying it through some wedding website!!!

Sign In Board - Target
I found this while it was on sale from $60 to $15!!! I snagged it up and in the end almost everyone signed it. Those who didn't might not have noticed it, but JT did put it where everyone could see it - right by the entrance to the Oak Room.

Tiara - Smithhaven Mall, Some store next to Payless Shoes. - A
Sorry I can't remember the name of the store, I just tossed out the receipt recently, but they were a great help, and while the selection for tiaras was small, they have a lot in the way of jewelry and beautiful things. I paid more than I probably should have, and found it cheaper online afterwards, but I loved my tiara, since apparently 3rd time is the charm!! (I bought 2 others prior)

Veil, Crinoline, Corset, Earrings - Phyllis @ Gownfind, now at Bridal Elegance - A+
I got my gorgeous veil from Phyllis after not being happy with the previous 2 I bought. I fell in love with it when I saw it even though it was a 1 layer mantilla, and didn't care how much it costed, but luckily it was under $100!! She added on a blusher with velcro which did the trick! The earrings I found from her were perfect, rhinestones on top in a diamond shape with a pearl hanging from it. The corset was a perfect fit and just what I needed (I only needed to add some 'cutlets' the day of) and the crinoline was a tough find but she came through in spades. I needed a mega full crinoline, and that's exactly what I got!!!

Alterations - Phyllis again - A++++
After my gown being butchered by Lestans, I feared my gown would never look normal again. It was Phyllis who pointed out all of the things wrong with my dress, and once she did I realized she was right. After all, what the hell do I know about what to look for when it comes to mistakes on a wedding gown? I had about 3 or 4 fittings which started in mid March, and by the time my final fitting came around, my gown was perfect. The skirt was straight, the length was all even, the straps were clean & straight. I was amazed at the job she did and how she managed to fix my gown in time. She was my God send, and I will forever be thankful to her.

Rest of Day of Jewelry - Courtesy of DH & Macy's
My tri-color pearl necklace that DH bought me for my 30th b-day was the only thing that worked with my gown. Everything else either looked like it was competing or was too simple. All I know is the box says 'Christian Bernard - Paris' and he said he got it in Walt Whitman mall.

The pearl bracelet I had a hard time finding one that didn't have pearls that was too big, too small or too cheap looking. This one I found at Macy's for about $15 and did the trick.

Now on to the big vendors:
Hotel - Wingate Inn, Garden City - A+
Everything with the Wingate Inn was great!!! Check in was easy for us (not so easy for one of my BM's, but that was her fault thinking she could check in at 9:30am) they gave us champagne and strawberries on our wedding night, had a wonderful continental breakfast downstairs that I thank my lucky stars for!!! Had it not been for the breakfast at the hotel, I think my entire BP including myself might have starved!!! All of the staff was friendly and patient, and we had nothing but a great experience. Even my ILs were impressed with their room as well!!!
Here's some pics that were taken in my room, we had the Grand Bridal Suite

Florist & Custom Aisle Runner - Laurie from LA Blossom - Beyond any grade!!!
I had switched florists 2 months before my wedding. I had booked with Signature, however after 2 appointments that I drove from Smithtown to Bellmore to only be stood up, I had enough. Not to mention there were things I had my heart set on that they could not do, such as my heart shaped bouquet. It turned out later on that George stopped going to the Bellmore location and handed it over to Yelena, and instead was working out of Manhattan. No one ever told me this. Had this been the case, I would have been a lot more understanding as to why George was not there for the appointments after he said he would be. It also didn't help that my sample bouquet with them was just blah to me.
Enter Laurie, who I will be singing the praises of until the end of time!!! She was a total sweetheart from the very beginning, always open to new ideas, and the word no was never in her vocabulary. She finally got me excited about my flowers. Every time I made changes she never flinched or missed a beat. And when I was prepared to paint my aisle runner myself, but was afraid I would mess it up, she did it for me, for a fee. And it came out absolutely stunning. I still don't know if anyone noticed it, but I knew it was there.

This was when I had printed it up the verse for the aisle runner and planned on painting it myself:

The day of everything was beyond gorgeous. My bo-k was everything I wanted it to be. I put together all of my heart shaped rhinestones for my bo-k and she used them everywhere she could. My bo-k was huge and heavy, but I had asked for it, after all!!! I had spasms in my wrists from carrying it, after all it did hold 5 dozen roses!!! But the pain was worth the beauty!!!
My BM bo-ks were a little more pink than I thought they would be, but I had remembered she said she would do that to make them stand out more, and I am glad she did. Oksana even commented on how the BM bo-ks were the best she had ever seen.
Here, my FG actually LIFTED my bo-k!!! This was amazing and funny to all of us considering how heavy it was!!!

The CPs were exactly how I envisioned. We both agreed we hated seeing the same CP over and over at every table so we mixed it up between red, pink, lavender and then a mixture of the 3 on the parents tables. And everyone loved the marshmallows in the vases!!! (My idea after DH nixed my lemons in the vase idea) She even sent me hundreds of photos of ideas after she saw I was getting stressed about trying to have an original CP while making DH happy at the same time.
Everyone raved about all of the flowers, and I even had single men asking me for her information!!! I wish i could get married again to have an excuse to work with her again!!

If you do not have a florist yet, check out Laurie!!! She is not only a great florist, but a great friend!!!!
Videographer - Ray from Timeless Treasures - A++ - final product - A+++++
This was a gift to us from 5 of my fellow LIW brides, so I had to trust their judgment. We only met with him briefly once before the wedding to go over the details. He was relaxed, easy going, and he had worked with our photographer before, and they both liked each other. So this was a bonus, and was relieved we had nothing to worry about, as he seemed to have the same views as us about not being in your face, and taking things easy.
Ray arrived on time and was the heartbreaker at my wedding. (He's married!!!) I did not even know he was there most of the time, and I didn't notice him at all during the ceremony. While I was getting ready I had music playing, and Ray starts rocking out to 'Smack My B!tch Up' by Prodigy. Probably one of the funnier moments I remember from the day. He was an absolute doll to work with, and after viewing our video, I can honestly say he did an amazing job. He captured things we were not even aware of that were happening. I would highly recommend Ray to anyone out there looking for a videographer!!
Hair & Makeup - Jenn & Oksana - Beyond any rating!!!
What can I say about them that has not already been said? They were exactly what I needed that day, and had it not been for them, what could have been an argument between my BM, MOH & me got diffused very quickly. They actually stepped in and told my BM off, saying to her that she was supposed to be making my day easier, not harder. Oksana did makeup for me and 2 other BMs and Jenn did hair for me, my MOH, 1BM and my Jr. BM and FG. Everyone turned out gorgeous. I was worried about my hair being 'too high' when she did it, but everyone assured me it was fine, and looking back on my pics, she was absolutely right. We were all extremely happy with their work, and all I kept hearing from others was how gorgeous and beautiful we all came out. I could not have been any happier with both of these wonderful, funny ladies!!! (And we had the same tastes in music!!!)
Here's some pics of them in action....

My wonderful MIL stopped in to see the transformation:

And for you non believers, here's proof of what they accomplished with a very funny before pic (non professional)

and the after pic:

Other girls they worked on:

Honorable Mention - Darlene, aka October Bliss, my honorary MOH and acting 'DOC' for the day....beyond any rating!!!
Darlene, I love ya!!! You made sure things got done, ran and made sure I ate, hell you even forced me to eat by hand feeding me a croissant. You planned my bachelorette party after seeing the fiasco that was the shower that almost wasn't, and you were our parents' right hand. You might have pissed off some people I know along the way, but the people who count think you're the best, and that's all the matters, right?? Had it not been for you being there on my wedding morning, I might have committed homicide!! So for you I could never thank you enough!!! I will just have to return the favor in October!!!

Here's Darlene & Oksana zipping me up because none of my BMs were dressed yet!!

DJ - Frank @ FM Entertainment - A
We liked Frank from the moment we met him and booked him on the spot after seeing 4 other DJs. He never once tried to hard sell us or make us get something we didn't want or need. He was laid back, relaxed, not in your face at all, and had people on the dance floor. My only issues were at times the music was a bit loud, so I would signal to him to lower it, and that I should have just given him free reign with the music, because not everyone danced to some of the songs that we chose. He played a lot of songs from our list, just that not everyone was into our list, and that is not Frank's fault at all. The last hour of the night I told him to basically wing it, and play what he thought would work, and he was on target, as he had everyone dancing on the floor after that.
Here's people getting the party going!!! (I love the first pic, Mel!!

Our 'hora'

DH getting down with my LIW girls

And my personal favorite, my LIW girls doing the ring around the bride

Officiant - Rev. Debra Viola of Ceremonies of the Heart - Beyond any rating!!!
Rev. Deb was great from the very beginning. I knew from our first meeting that she was a genuine person, and her love of animals was great!!! She was always in contact with me, every so often sending me emails, asking me how things were going. She got me excited about our ceremony!! The day of she performed a beautiful service, to the point where our guests were telling us they got emotional at our ceremony, when they never got emotional at any one else's!!!
Rev. Deb had her hands full with us as we were incorporating both of our religions into the ceremony, and she did it effortlessly as if she did it every day. We are both so happy that we chose her as our officiant and would recommend her to anyone.

Here's one of my favorite pictures: My father walking me down the aisle and he is beaming and I am smiling. It's probably the only picture where he's smiling so much.

Limos - Royalty - A+
None of our trips were very far (less than 10 minutes each time between the Wingate Inn, Hofstra University & Jericho Terrace) but we felt it was better to get limos anyway.
Our drivers were sweet, courteous and funny. They arrived a bit early, which was fine, and helped everyone with their things and getting in and out of the limos. DH's limo driver came at the end of the night to take us to the hotel, and he helped us carry everything back and forth. He was even telling us how really nice everyone was, especially my brother. I wish I could remember both drivers names, I would highly recommend them!!!

Photographer - Christina Bohn - Another vendor beyond any rating!!!!
Christina is phenomenal. And there aren't many people I say that about. We met with 4 photographers before choosing Christina after I noticed she was the only photographer that we met with that DH was smiling at the meeting. She is laid back, candid, unobtrusive and just an all around amazing photojournalistic photographer. I have over 1200 absolutely gorgeous proofs, and I started scanning my favorites. When all was said and done I had scanned nearly 300 of them!!!! We only knew she was there on occasion, most of the time we didn't know she was there, and she caught shots I didn't even know she took. I have beautiful memories of our day, and I have her to thank for that. It's a shame more people don't know about her, she is an absolute sweetheart, but that could be our little secret!!!!
About 2 weeks after the wedding, she sent us this amazing slideshow with some of our proofs:
Our Wedding Slideshow by Christina Bohn
Here comes a mass amount of pics showing her amazing work!

Here my friend tells me she hasn't seen me dance like that since our clubbing days!

DH telling me during our first dance, 'maybe we should have gone for those dance lessons after all!'

Last but not least......
Hall - Jericho Terrace - Amazing!!! A++++
I had stressed about the hall in the beginning after booking. But eventually after dealing with Anthony, our BM some more, my fears were put to rest.
We had the Oak Room, which not many people know about, and that suits me fine. It's a stunning room with golds, beiges and murals on the walls. All of our dealings at JT were great, with the exception of one BM we spoke to when Anthony was not around, but that was no big deal. We had a lot of requests, and they met them and then some. Linda was our Maitre'D and we had Andrea and Marianna as our bridal attendants. Trust me when I tell you they all worked their butt off!!! Everything was amazing, people still keep raving about the food, the decor, everything!!! There was food upon food to the point where some of our guests even said it was TOO MUCH food!!! We made many changes to the menu, and were glad we did, as all of the finger food went fast!! I was also shocked on the day of that we had our chair covers thrown in for free!!! I'm not sure if this was because last minute we didn't make our minimum because of a family emergency, or just because my BM knew I wanted them badly. Either way, I was very happy!!
There was only a few minor issues that only I noticed.
1. I had asked for a cake or cupcake to be brought out for 2 people's birthdays and it was never done. However I had made the request at the final meeting, so it may have been overlooked.
2. Our 'We Do' letters kept moving around for some reason. They were on the placecard table, then the cake table, then our sweetheart table. I thought I was going crazy until I noticed it in the proofs, which confirmed they were indeed moved around. Because of this, one of my letters was almost falling over. (I had them standing up). And when they were given back to me, one of the letters must have completely fallen off, because they attempted to nail it back in, which just made it look worse.
Here they are on the placecard table in the CH:

Then they pop up on the cake table:

They ended up on the sweetheart table afterwards.
Like I said, there were very minor issues, and only I noticed them. Even DH didn't notice these things.
Otherwise, it was an amazing time, DH & I made sure to enjoy as much as we could. I made sure I ate the food, and everything was delicious. My father had some issue with his steak, and they offered to replace it, but coming from a stubborn family, he turned down the offer. Our BM Anthony checked up on us about 3 or 4 times to make sure everything was okay. Our bridal attendants constantly asked if we needed anything. We didn't ask for much, anyway!!
I would highly recommend Jericho Terrace beyond a shadow of a doubt. So many people told us it was one of the best weddings they had ever been to. And I know Jericho Terrace is a big reason for that!!!
This pic was actually taken in the WOMEN's BATHROOM!!

The CH: (note the stay puft marshmellow bride in the background!!! Or at least that's what I called myself all day!!)

Our 'sweetheart table'

In closing, I will say the time leading up to your wedding is the absolute most stressful thing you will ever deal with. You can never understand it until you are in it. Do not be afraid to ask for help. Screw pride. You are but one person. Let others help you get things done so that it's less stress for you. Planning a wedding and handling life in general is stress enough!!!

Janna - Congratulations!!! You look amazing in your photos - like the true princess that you are!! Your review is wonderful and I loved reading every piece of it!! No matter what happened during this whole process, the most important fact is you are married to the man of your life and the love that you two share for one another is evident in all those photos!!!! Congrats!!!
