My budget 8/8/08 wedding:featuring Elite Affairs, Hidden Essence, Camelot, Riccardo's, ShiraZ Photography, Halo Video, MAS Music, Queens Botanical Garden, Creative Styles and much more

Ok, I must say I don’t know how people plan weddings without sites like these. LIW has definitely been helpful in my whole planning process. I also want to give a special thank you to sites like ebonybridalplanner (sister site to LIW) and EB (you guys know who you are). I should give a special thanks to “RabiaElaine” for telling me about these websites, chat sites were just never my thing but I quickly got addicted.

Our wedding was beautiful and turned out way better than I expected

First some word of advice:

Some of these have probably been said over and over again but it won’t hurt to hear/read it again:
1) Stay within your budget. Don’t try to get the most expensive reception hall, the biggest bridal party, the most extravagant DJ package if you know you can’t afford it. Your wedding can be just as wonderful without a lot of that stuff. We planned our wedding on our own and I did pick my dream RH but I got a nice wedding. I didn’t get DJ/MC package, I only got a DJ package. We were however surprised because our DJ showed up with a MC anyway (at least for part of the night) But you know what, my guests danced all night. We didn’t have our names written in lights or a plasma with a montage but we had fun. I didn’t have 1 dozen people in my bridal party and they still looked great in pictures and I didn’t have to spend a fortune buying gifts for a huge bridal party. Don’t get me wrong-If you can afford it, do it!
2) Don’t let family or friends stress you out with how to plan your own wedding. It’s your day, you do what you want.
3) You will know your true friends when it comes around to your wedding. If someone you really expected to be there for you doesn’t show an interest, don’t sob about it.
4) You will get overwhelmed at some point during the planning, just breathe, make a list of all your “to-do’s” and take it one step at a time.
5) Some things you should spend the extra money on: Photography. Be the judge for yourselves. I had an awesome photographer!
6) DIY what you can. I saved a ton DIYing stuff.
7) Everyone will not RSVP. As easy as the process is, some people just won’t. Don’t sweat it, just call them up.
8) Start planning early. Don’t think you have an unlimited amount of time because time flies by so fast.
9) Everyone that comes to your wedding will not give you a gift. You would think people should just know by now (but they don’t). We just went with the idea to not expect anything and we turned out pretty ok. We were grateful for what we got.
10) Do your research. You will want quality but it is possible to get quality at a good price. Compare your prices before you make a decision. We flip flopped on a lot of things. We could have saved ourselves the trouble if we had just done some more research.
11) You don’t have to invite everyone you know to your wedding.

Ok, enough of the blah blah. Here goes:

PRE WEDDING FESTIVITIES:

The Bridal Shower

Shower Dress-Macy’s
www.macys.com

I originally got this really sexy red dress from Marshall’s and then couldn’t find shoes that I liked to go with it. So the day before the shower I was in Macy’s getting this dress.

I was pleased with what my bridesmaids had done when it came to my shower. The food was good. The favors were good and they had some fun games. I invited maybe 30 people to my shower and I must say I was very disappointed when people that had RSVPed yes, did not show up at last minute. They should know that I hold grudges and I will always remember this ?. It was still a nice day though. We had it at one of my bridesmaid’s grandparents’ back yard in New Hyde Park. They had a tent set up back there, it came in handy even though it didn’t rain until we were done.
Hair for the bridal Shower- The fabulous Shannon Mormon.
I did a few trials with her. She did my hair for the shower and did my hair for the wedding.

The Bachelorette Party
www.hunkamania.com
www.mansionnyc.com

This was crazy! So my wedding was on a Friday and therefore no way I would have a bachelorette party the night before. So I was going back and forth with my 2 NY resident BMs to see when was good for them. My two other BMs were out- of- towners so I knew they wouldn’t be there. Of the 2 NY BMs, it turns out that one just could not get off from work no matter what date I chose. The weekend before the wed was out because I told DH that he could have his bachelor party that weekend and he was going out of town. So that left 2 weeks before the wedding. I kept getting all these great ideas for a bach party from my BMs but nobody planned anything. I got really upset because I know people would need notice to attend. I got to planning myself and decided I wanted to do some kind of strip club and then clubbing.
At last minute my only bridesmaid that was going to attend told me that she didn’t realize she had a prior engagement. I was like, WHAT!
I told one of my friends what was going on and she decided that I had to have a bachelorette party no matter what. I told her I wanted to go to Hunkamania and she made it happen. It turns out that club was one of her clients. It was about six of us total and she got us into Hunkamania for FREE! And we got 2 complimentary bottle of champagne. After Hunkamania we went to this club called Mansion. Mansion was another hook up. We got comp liquor all night too. We had a great time! (at least I did).I am forever grateful to her. Its always nice when someone goes out of their way to do something nice for someone.
This is all I can post as far as that night

The Rehearsal Dinner
The Door Restaurant
Queens, NY

We wanted to keep this very simple. It was going to be just the bridal party, parents and my closest friends from out of town (because the 3 of them traveled so far). There were a total of 15 people there. I did a cute little rehearsal dinner invite. We had the rehearsal at the QBG at 7pm and then went to the restaurant to eat dinner. The food is good there and we wanted something inexpensive. They reserved the private room for us, but we paid the price for buffet dinner (which we were happy about). It was all you can eat seafood and Jamaican food. DELICIOUS! My mom paid for the rehearsal dinner for us. DH had mentioned that he wanted liquor at the RD and I told him no way, not with my mom paying for it. I had gotten him a groom’s cake from Audrey’s Bakery in the shape of a Heineken. When they brought it out, I said to him “You know how you wanted liquor, well here is a beer”. He loved it. It was so well done and tasted great. Everyone thought it was so cool. I think it made him feel special that he had his own cake. I recommend other brides doing this for their FH.

THE WEDDING:

The Theme
Purple and lavender. I always loved purple and I wanted a bridesmaid dress with two tone colors so I thought lavender would go great with the purple. I also wanted to choose a color that would be easy to coordinate with other things (napkins, chair sashes etc). It’s weird, but that was my reasoning.

Invitations
This was a DIY you could say. I did pocket folds and my invitations were ready for months until it was time to send them out. The idea I had to seal them just did not work and I ruined the pockets. I ended up doing over the whole thing, but I am glad I did.

Save the Dates
www.vistaprint.com

We designed our save the date at vistaprint. We sent to only family and closest friends. Basically we sent to the people that would definitely be there. I don’t believe that save the dates should be sent to everyone especially since they are sent so early. You really don’t want to send one to someone and then decide to not invite them.

Bridal Gown
www.maggiesotero.com
Style #JSM1042
Ordered from Pearlsplace
www.pearlsplace.com

The dress shopping process for me started out as fun but then horrific. For me there wasn’t just ONE dress, I think I could have picked 3 dresses that were “the one”…lol. I ended up second guessing this dress even 1 month before my wedding. But fell in love all over gain on my wed day. I tried on over 70 dresses and I went dress shopping by myself. My mom lives outside the US so I didn’t have her to go shopping with me. I would try on the dresses then send her pics of it and she gave me her opinion. There were probably 2 times a friend and I went to RK Bridal together because she was also dress shopping for her wed 2 days after mine.
I ordered my dress from Pearlplace. I was given quotes from them for other dresses and they were always so much cheaper than everyone else. But apparently Maggie Sottero isn’t so flexible with their prices. The price for this dress was pretty standard everywhere I checked. But I had no problem with ordering through Pearlsplace and I recommend it to all my girls on a budget.
I contemplated getting a second dress but I am glad I didn’t spend the extra money. By all means, if you have the money get one.

Alterations
Angela Gong
G&G Tailoring
46 Grand Street
New York , NY
212-966-9813
She was recommended by “akamrst:”. She did a good job. And I see now that her price was more reasonable than I thought. I got angry with her when I went to pick up the dress because I thought it needed to be steamed again but it wasn’t her fault, it was the material the dress was made from. She gets an A.

Tiara
Barrons-Tri-County Flea Market

Everyone knows them. I loved my tiara. I didn’t want a tiara at first or even a veil but I gave in. And again, I am glad I did. I didn’t wear a veil though.

Shoes
Sandy’s Shoes
www.sandys-shoesonline.com

I ordered my shoes and the bridesmaids shoes from Sandy’s Shoes. All our shoes were dyed and Carolyn added some bling to my shoes..lol. Shoes were hard for me because I didn’t really want all my toes out (I have issues, I know). I just don’t like my toes but at the same time I didn’t want them enclosed all day. So I found a peep toe that was perfect.
My bridesmaids shoes came in 2 different heights which I thought was perfect because my BMs ranged in height from 6 ‘ tall to 4’9”. When I placed the order I told them that I wanted the shortest BM to have the higher heel and the other 2 shoes I order in the shorter heel. This was clearly written on the receipt by their staff somehow screwed that up. Everyone ended up with the shorter heel. I didn’t even realize it until the day before the wedding. I inspected the shoes when I picked them up and was very impressed with how they matched the colors but just didn’t realize that it was the wrong size heel. I didn’t even call them to complain about it. It wasn’t that big of a deal and I was always pleased with their professionalism and great customer service when I went there.

Bra
Terminal Lingerie
Queens, NY

I got a corset from Terminal Lingerie on Jamiaca Avenue in Queens. I knew I wanted to wear a corset under my dress because I wanted something to suck me in as much as possible. I wanted to look as thin as I could be.

Underwear
www.classybride.com

I got a Mrs underwear from classy bride. It was very comfortable….exactly what I was looking for.

Day of Jewelry
www.Stoneflower.com
www.macys.com

I definitely didn’t want to spend too much on something that I will wear just once. I am as frugal as they come..lol I was at the Seaport one day and found the cutest little store. They had the whole set for $40.
I wanted to get myself a bracelet but couldn’t find one that didn’t cost an arm and a leg.
I went to Macy’s and found this beautiful watch. I figured it could double as a bracelet and with the watch I could be sure to be on time. It came the day of the wedding and I am trying to set the time and the stupid watch didn’t work. I was so mad. Of course I wore it anyway but then took it right back to Macy’s when I came back from the honeymoon. And I gave them my angry face.

Garter
Ebay vendor- vvntreny
www.vvntrendy.com

It was in my colors and I got 2, one to toss and one for keepsake. I paid $14.95 I think.

Our Rings
www.zales.com

Good Ole Zales. I didn’t want to spend a fortune our rings. I wanted it to look nice and wanted to make sure we could afford it. Happy with the outcome, I think my set looks great together. We might upgrade Dh’s ring someday. He thinks his is too plain.

Tuxedo
www.menswearhouse.com

We got Dh and the GM’s tux from Menwearhouse the main reason was because all our GMs were from out of town/county. When DH went to pick up his tux, they ordered the wrong size pants for him. And then my brother’s vest was the wrong color. The good thing is these problems were easily fixed. But these problems seem to happen a lot so if you can do without using them..DON’T.

Bridesmaid Dresses
www.edenbridal.com

My bridesmaid dresses are from Eden Bridal but ordered through Macy’s. I got a discount at one of their trunk sales at Macy’s Smithhaven Mall so I ordered it through Macy’s. One of my bridesmaid is tall and I told them to order extra length. I even called to confirm that they did this, but when the dress came, clearly it wasn’t done. It turned out ok because my bridesmaids dresses were supposed to be tea length and after one of my bridesmaid complained about it being too long and it wouldn’t look good on her, I decided to have them all cut it and make it knee length.

Toddle r Tux
Ebay-tuxsuitsandmore

We got our son’s tux from an ebay seller. She was very accommodating because I ordered the suit too big and she exchanged it pretty quickly. Of course our son did not want to be in a suit all day. He wore the pants and the vest though….that little brat lol

Toddler Shoes
ww.payless.com
We got our son a nice pair of shoes from payless. I paid $17.99. At first I toyed with the idea of getting him striderite shoes because I know how comfortable they are. But then I remembered how much stride rite shoes cost, so I went with payless. I am guessing they weren’t that uncomfortable because he didn’t kick them off…lol.

Limo
www.camelotlimo.com

Who doesn’t know them. …they were on time and Hus (our driver) was great!
I got a black stretch. ……Yes ladies…black! I didn’t see the need to pay the extra for white car. I picked where I wanted to save money.

www.uslimoservice.com

I needed a car to take my mom, son, brother and sister at the end of the night. I got a great deal through US Limos via the recommendation of a co-worker.
They were on time and courteous.

Accommodations
Sheraton LaGuardia Hotel
www.sheratonlaguardia.com

I reserved a suite for myself and the BMs to get dressed here. It’s beautiful there. DH and I also stayed here the night of the wedding. I visited this place and reserved it thinking it can be our rain back up. I thought we could get some beautiful pictures there if it rained. The BMs and I got dressed and before we left for the ceremony we took some pictures on the outdoor terrace there. The place is just simply gorgeous!

The Ceremony
Queens Botanical Garden
www.queensbotanical.com

We had our ceremony at the Queens Botanical Garden. Apart from the time restriction with the ceremony garden, I have no complaints. We booked the garden one year before the wedding and its good thing we did. If we were any later, we wouldn’t have gotten the space. But when you prepare for a garden wedding, be prepared to be disappointed if it rains. We had a room prepared as a rain back up but the ceremony started off fine and before we knew it, it started raining. We had to run under the closest shelter (a nearby tent). The rain ended by the end of the ceremony and we got to do all our outdoor pictures. I couldn’t have asked for more. While it rained everyone said how it’s a blessing when it rains on your wedding day…but of course no bride wants to hear that.
DH and I wrote our own vows. I am so glad we did. I recommend everyone does this. It adds such a special touch to the ceremony. Oh, and we both cried!
We were good on time and after the QBG we took some more pictures at Astoria Park.

Ceremony Music
MAS Music (LIW vendor)
www.mariestack.com

Marie Stack was awesome. I met her for the first time at the ceremony and I just remembered hearing the beautiful music but wishing it could go on forever. She played the violin for our ceremony. She is very talented and plays many instruments so check her out.

Officiant
Rev William Corbett
516-775-6849

He is retired Judge and an ordained minister. His wife is also an ordained minister. He did a good job. We met with him months before our wedding and he gave us a sample ceremony and told us to choose what we wanted. He is also very reasonable compared to most officiants.
Funny story- I had paid all the vendors except for the videographer, so I had all the gratuity envelopes ready. I get to the garden and my DOC told me the officiant was asking for his payment. It turns out that I forget about him, I had no money to give him. I was so happy that my mom had extra cash on her….we almost didn’t have a ceremony. lol

Reception Hall
Riccardos by the Bridge
www.riccardos.com
We looked at a lot of halls. We wanted a wedding and not just a civil ceremony but knew there was only a certain price we could afford. We had just bought a place and we had a son that suck up all our money ?. We were also pretty sure we wanted somewhere either on Queens or LI since most of our friends were on LI or in Brooklyn, Queens seemed to be a midpoint though. We liked the price and the hospitality we got at Riccardos before the wedding.
I remember reading a post right before my wedding where a bride asked about halls in Queens and someone responded that they lived in Astoria and that this bride can do better than halls in Astoria. I thought this was so rude and I was offended because I thought my RH (which is in Astoria) is a pretty decent place. And to have this bride say oh people can do better than Astoria halls made me mad because I thought how does she know peoples’ finances. As much as we would all like to have the fairy tale wedding, everyone can’t afford it. We all know weddings are expensive and it makes no sense to go completely broke on this one day, especially if you don’t have anyone helping to pay for it.
Where I was happy with the service we got before the wedding day, I think they could have paid some more attention to us on the day of the wedding. I would still recommend them though because they made it possible for us to afford our wedding. All you brides on a budget check them out.

Coordinators

I planned my wedding on my own, but knew I needed the extra help on my wedding day. Special shout outs to my new “sisters” Kim & Keresha. My day wouldn’t have been half as beautiful if they were not there to help out. Thank You Kim and Keresha. I owe you both. Kim, can’t wait to do your wedding and Keresha ….get married already!!!!! lol

Bouquets
Hidden Essence (liw vendor)
www.hiddenessence.com

Michelle from Hidden Essence is awesome! She did a wonderful job with my bouquet and the BMs bouquets. She is super talented. The flowers were delivered on time and I couldn’t have asked for more.

Bouquet Ribbon & Dress Tag
www.justembroideredtotes.com

I got my bouquet ribbon and dress tag from here and loved them. Funny thing is I thought she did such a great job that I had emailed her to ask her if she did embroidered handkerchiefs and she never responded. I was looking for a handkerchief for my mom a few weeks before the wedding. I always give vendors the benefit of the doubt though because you never know when an email may have gotten lost in spam mail. You should all keep that in mind.

Photographer
Shira Zimmerman
www.shirazphotography.com

I love love love Shira’s work. We met her in the fall before our wedding when she was having a free engagement shoot in Eisenhower Park. Someone on LIW had posted this so we contacted her and showed up. Now before we had met with Shira we had a meeting scheduled with another photographer a few days after this engagement shoot. We still met with this photographer and actually signed a contract with him, even though we didn’t see Shira’s work yet. Well let’s just say Shira sent us the proofs from the engagement shoot and I was in love. I begged DH to let us change photographers. We would be losing our deposit but I didn’t care. We contacted Shira and she gave me a quote that seemed very reasonable. Then we went through a whole thing of almost canceling the wedding because we couldn’t afford it. We went back and forth with a parent saying they might help and ended up that they didn’t. At last minute we hired Shira. She was great to work with! I love my pictures!

Mommy & I

Video
www.halovideo.com

Jose gave me a great quote for video. We weren’t gonna get a video at first but I gave in (the pressure)
Our videographer was Jack. Boy did he take control. He was cool though and I am very anxious to see this video too. My only regret was that I should have tipped Jack more ?

Hair & Make-up
Creative Styles-Shannon Morman
917-293-4112

I am very honored to have met this very talented woman. I did a few trials with Shannon. Not because I didn’t like what she did, but because I was indecisive. Shannon did my hair and my BMs hair for the wedding day. She is super talented and beyond reasonable. I wanted to look great on my wed day and not spend too much and she did just that.

Programs, Menus, Place cards, Seating Chart, Aisle Runner, Table Runner, Cake topper, Card Box, Candy Boxes and Cake Boxes, Personalized Water, Crypack, WE DO Letters
Elite Affairs, LLC
www.eliteaffairsllc.com
347-893-8605

In addition to place cards I wanted a seating chart too because I just like them. It was more work, but I didn’t care.
We did a candy buffet so we used take out boxes for those.
Aisle Runner-I am very happy with how this came out

Table Runner- This was used twice, on the cake table and on the candy buffet table.
My mom insisted that we give rum cake (West Indian tradition). These are the boxes for the cakes
WE DO Letters- We put these on the cake tables.

Table Numbers

I had a co-worker do these for me and then Leslie (Lesliemike) designed something for me that I liked better.

Favors
At first we didn’t want to spend a lot on favors. Very early in the planning we bought these personalized bags from www.efavormart.com and thought we would fill them with Hershey kisses. Well when we decided to do the candy buffet we realized that it was probably over the top to give guests hersheys and then candy at the end of the night again. Since we were stuck with the bags we still used them. We got “Love beyond Measure” tape measure keychains for the bags. I got them form an ebay vendor.

Rum Cake
As if the keychain and the candy buffet was not enough we also gave them rum cake (this was so yummy). My mom bought them from Jamaica.

Candy Buffet-Containers for the candy bar we bought at Michaels and we got candy from www.economycandy.com
It depends on what type of candy you get. This can turn out to be very expensive.

More projects I did:

Parasol- Instead of doing a 'thank you' or 'just married', mine said “Love”. I bought the parasol from www.pearlriver.com. They have a store in NYC. However it was personalized by Elite Affairs.

Centerpieces. I got the rose bush, vases, fillers and made them months before the wedding. They were packed and ready for months. I was worried this would look cheesy but I think they came out ok.
Slipper Basket- This was a big hit. The ladies loved them.

Gift for the Groom
ww.macys.com

Fh wanted to exchange gifts in the beginning and I told him no way, us paying for the wedding was our gift to each other. I ignored that and actually bought him a watch from Macy’s. It doubles as a bracelet. He loves it.

Gift for Mother
www.personalizedpresents.com

Our parents didn’t contribute to our wedding really except for my mom. She paid for the rehearsal dinner and still gave us some cash. We weren’t going to buy parent gifts but I had planned to get parent albums after the wedding for each our parents. I felt the need to get my mom a little token though, so I got her a handkerchief. She loved it! My mom is not the crying type but she did shed a tear at the wedding. I am glad I bought it. It’s funny because she told me a that her co-worker said she had a dream that she cried at my wedding and she apparently told the co-worker she should get her a handkerchief then. I smiled at the story because I had already bought her the handkerchief ?.

Gift for Bridal Party

It is probably easiest to get them jewelry, but NO…I had to be different. I got them robes (found on sale at Century 21), They were so soft and nice. I then went to Tri-County and got them embroidered with their names on the front.

Special Gift for myself
I couldn’t resist getting myself one of these robes too. I had my new name and wedding date embroidered on the back. Love it!

Groomsmen
They are all drinkers so we got them each a bottle of Jamaican Rum Cream. Everybody loves these so I asked my mom to take a few for each of them. That was easy.

Some favorites

POST WEDDING FESTIVITIES:

Honeymoon
Punta Cana Princess Hotel
Punta Cana, Dominican Republic

Initially we weren’t going to take a honeymoon. We were going to just do an extended weekend on LI somewhere. I had issues with leaving my child for so long and financially I thought we wouldn’t have been able to afford it. I am so glad we decided to get away. We booked our honeymoon through Travel Tom. He was good with finding us a good deal. We stayed at the Punta Cana Princess Hotel. It’s an adult only hotel and boy we loved that idea. We had an all inclusive package and we ate and drank way too much….lol. We went snorkeling, parasailing, horseback riding, we swam with sharks and stingrays (they removed the stings, it was safe). We went to the beach and pool all day. We went to the Jacuzzi. I had the best massage ever while I was there, I fell asleep on the table.
Then of course all good things must come to an end.

I was drinking Coco Loco the whole trip. It’s our new favorite drink. We got the ingredients and came home and tried it.

The drink of Dominican Republic…Mamajuana

We were scheduled to come back 8/15 and our flight was canceled due to a storm. I was so unhappy with how American airlines dealt with this. We were left to figure things out for ourselves. We were taken to an area to get our luggage and take a taxi to a hotel. We are in this strange country with no extra cash on us because we thought we were going home. We hooked up with 2 other couples and they paid the cab to the hotel. When we got to the hotel we went to an ATM and then paid the cab fare back to the hotel the next day.
The hotel –Melia Tropical Caribe basically ripped us off. I guess they heard our flight canceled and decided to take advantage of that. Let’s just say what we paid for the night was almost the cost for the whole vacation at the Punta Cana Princess. We couldn’t even leave then and go somewhere else because we didn’t know where to go.
Ok, so it’s the next day and we go to the airport and the flight was still late that day, even with perfect weather. Then we get on the flight and American Airline tells us they don’t have a meal for us because of the cancellation the day before and they had to throw out the food. So all we got was chips and soda. So we were starving on the trip. I complained to American Airlines and they gave us a $100 voucher each. It’s not much, but it’s better than nothing. Now I just have to find somewhere to go before 8/29/2009 so we can use the vouchers..lol

Us at a cigar factory

I promise, I wasnt inhaling

I advise you all to pay the little extra for travel insurance. This came in handy. We will get back a portion of what we spent at that hotel the extra night.

I hope this review was useful to somebody. Any questions, feel free to FM me.

Lisa!!! Your pics are amazing - I think I told you this, but Shira photographed my niece's first bday party in April and she did a fabulous job. If i didn't already have a photog I would have hired her.

You looked gorgeous in every shot and you looked like you had a great time. Congrats!!!!!!
