My June 10, 2005 wedding at The Woodlands--LONG!

My pre-wedding time on LIW was relatively short--I was married 10 and a half months after I got engaged. It has been a fun time, sharing, giving and receiving with so many of you! (Any Friends fanatics out there?)

Here is my review. Our wedding was by far, the most fun we've ever had in one day. Its had to describe in words how overwhelmed (in a good way) we felt with our guests presence at our celebration.

(I had to compress all the images, so they aren't nearly as sharp here as they appear in our proofs.)

My invite, purchased from Lion in the Sun , Huntington NY (A perfect 10)

I cannot say enough good things about Lion in the Sun. I was looking for something 'different' and of a higher quality to really set the mood of my wedding. Most places had all the same books, so we were thrilled at the Rita Renning brand of invites. There were at least 3 themes I would love to have used, but Lillies are significant to me, and our two mothers. The quality of the paper was great, there were absolutely no errors or flaws on any of the invites, they gave me about 5 extra sets of everything and were delivered earlier than anticipated. The staff at Lion in the Sun were a pleasure to work with, and my invites are still one of my most favorite things of the wedding!

A neat picture with my Maid and Matron of Honor and my Mom.

The day started out gloomy, that turned to rain while we got our hair, nails and make up done. (Hair- Headlines in Northport, by Candace, and the rest of the BM by other girls there--9.3--my hair was perfect, but one of my BM had to get hers re-done by my stylist. Make-up by Julie, formerly of Red Door Salon in Huntington Saks. 9.8 my make up was great but didn't hide all the flaws of my skin by the end of the night.) By the time we started getting dressed, though, the sun was shining and the temperature was RISING! Here's a picture of me and my sun-loving white cat.

The flowers, from Flowers by Burton and Son in Melville, NY were delivered right on time. My rating for them is a 9.5. Here is a picture of three our beautiful bouquets. Honestly, mine turned out more beautiful than I could have imagined!

Here was the GOOD: My bouquet absolutely blew me away--it smelled and looked SO PRETTY, and the bridal party bouquets were just as I had asked--2 teardrops for the MOHs and 3 clutch for the other girls. The bouquets all had a great number of flowers and lasted for a VERY long time (mine lasted for about a week, according to my mom.) All the boutineers for the guys were perfect--they all got white roses, which surprisingly stayed WHITE the entire night. Our centerpieces were breathtaking--they were so big and the flowers were so fresh..several people were ooohing and ahhing about them! Since the Woodlands has relatively high ceilings, we went with the tall CPs, and I'm so glad we did. The fish bowls with floating roses for the cocktail hour were perfect, and I'm bummed I don't have a good picture of the topiary they made for my place card table. That was outstanding! One thing that really helped their score was I had called last minute to see if they could give me a few extra flowers to decorate my cake--they gave me a TON of flowers!

Here is the not-so-good: First, the Bridesmaids flowers were supposed to have vibrant peach and yellow colored roses to contrast against their blue gowns. I was a bit bummed at how pink the 'peach' looked. There were two other smaller issues with Burtons. First, originally we were just going to use the pew bows they provide. At our second meeting we changed that to blue hydragea in a tulle bow and I watched him write it down. We also told him NO MUMS in the alter vases, which he also wrote down. The day of the wedding, we didn't have the hydrangea in the pew bows, just the original (imo)ugly pew bows and the alter vases had a TON of mums in them with the blue hydrangea. After coming back from the honeymoon, it was explained that it doesn't say anything about the flower pew bows in my contract (which was correct, it was only on their sheet) and that they had charged me extra to have the hydrangea in the alter arrangements, because normally they'd just have a 'spray' of in-season flowers that never includes hydrangea. Ok, that's fine, it wasn't a lot of $$. I was just annoyed about the miscommunication. Had I known about the ugly pew bows before walking down the aisle, I wouldn't have had any pew decoration. The other downer was that both our mom's corsages of yellow roses were dead by the time the reception began, so they just tossed them.

On the upside, as I mentioned, all the IMPORTANT stuff was pretty darned close to perfect. Their prices are tough to beat, and really, the things that went wrong were very minor, so I would still feel confident recommending them to other brides--but if you have specific and significant addendums to your contract, ask them for a copy of what they write down! ;)

Another interesting picture, taken with the aid of a mirror.

Me and my bridesmaids. We got the bridesmaids dresses at Carmela's Bridal Garden in Huntington, NY (About 1 mile west of Rt.100, or 1/4 east of Oheka). BM dress score: 9.5

As you can see, each girl was given the choice of whichever dress she wanted as long as it came in the same fabric and color as I requested. I chose celestial blue in Matte Satin from the Dessy collection, which also includes a bunch of dresses from After Six as well. The prices at Carmela's are competitive--not the most expensive, not the cheapest either. What sold me on getting their dresses at the same place I purchased my dress was that Carmela herself does all the alterations. A number of the places who had these dresses less expensive didn't have the best reputation for alterations, so I opted not to chance it and go with someone reliable. The reason why she gets a few points off, ironically, is because of the alterations, or maybe it's really the ordering process.

Unlike most places, Carmela tries to order you the size you really need. She doesn't make you order a 14 when the 10 you are trying on fits almost perfectly because the 'chart' says you are a 14. Unfortunately, in the case of my girls who were mostly smaller than the samples, one skirt was just a tad shorter than what my BM would have liked and another girls' top was a tad too tight. The tight top was fixed, but the skirt--well, I don't think anyone really noticed but she and I. On the good side, one of my BMs gained a few pounds and Carmela was able to take out the dress to its max so she didn't have to order a new one. All the alterations were done when promised and we had PLENTY of time in which to do them, because all the dresses were in earlier than promised.

Here is another one of me and my gals. I also got my dress at Carmela's Bridal Garden in Huntington, NY. The score for my Paula Varsalona Gown? Perfect 10!

Everyday, on my way to work, I would pass this bridal salon and not really think of it. That was until I started getting fed up looking at other shops and finding nothing that really suited me and my personality. There really was no second choice after trying on this dress and I really think that in terms of quality, I almost think I underpaid (the quality was AMAZING!). I was looking for a very elegant 'old world' feeling dress. I didn't see myself with lots of glitter and sequins and sparkly stuff. So, really, this dress is exactly what I had wanted, but I never imagined it would be so perfect. And imo, the pearls were just enough to give it that 'bridal glow' we all as brides, hope to achieve. The sample of this dress was actually strapless. I was able to have it re-designed to have off the shoulder straps, which ended up being perfect. The only downside was that the designer at PV had extended one of the rows of pearls on the neckline in the back ALL THE WAY DOWN to the hem, which I did NOT like at all! Carmela was able to work her magic and not only could you not see that she had ripped stuff off, but she also filled in the areas where the designer had changed the beadwork..SEAMLESSLY

Seriously, everything went smoothly in my dealings with Carmela--my dress was early, the alterations were done perfectly, and the customer service was great! One thing she's very particular about though--make an appt, because she doesn't like to have 2 girls trying on wedding gowns at the same time. I will also add, I bought my headband at Carmela's. It was a bit more than I had wanted to spend, but I hadn't seen anything like this elsewhere and it just fit with the style of the dress.

Our ceremony took place at my church, Old First Presbyterian Church in Huntington, NY. I don't think you can really rate a church...especially since I want to go to heaven! :)
Here is a picture of my dad and I making the grand entrance.

As I mentioned, this was my church--for those familiar with Huntington, it's the big white church across from Town Hall. I was baptized there, got confirmed there and still go there, so in my mind, there was no other place to get married. It's beautiful in its simplicity and age--it was literally one of the first churches on Long Island, so unfortunately for us, its also not air conditioned.

(Note to future church ceremony brides--tell your ushers not to be shy of putting people close to the front! As you can see, the back few rows and sides had so many more people than the front.)

Dealing with my church was SO EASY. In the infant stages of planning all I had to do was call and make sure the Sanctuary and Minister were available on the day I wanted. Later on, we had to meet with the minister to go over logistical stuff. The regular Presbyterian wedding ceremony is very plain--no bells or whistles, so it takes around 20 minutes, from start to finish. Ours was a tad longer because my husband is Catholic! We opted for a dual religion ceremony since my church is open to other faiths. Aaron's uncle is a Deacon, so to add an element of family, he agreed to co-officiate the ceremony. For our marriage to be recognized by the Catholic Church, we had to go through Pre-Cana (which we did through St. Catherine of Siena in Rockville Centre). We also had to add a few Catholic elements to the ceremony. Uncle Ben (no joke!) did a homily (how riding tandem bicycles are like marriage), we had a nuptial prayer and one other special prayer not typically done in a Presbyterian wedding. Still, it was short in terms of church weddings so we were happy--the heat was making us really sweat!

First Kiss! (with Uncle Ben smiling at us)

We did also added two trumpeters to our organ music--the musical director at the church found 1 and the other was a friend of his, who happend to be on break from the NY Philharmonic! We loved our music!

Here we are leaving the church to the sound of our steeple bell! YIPPEE!

After the ceremony, we actually used the lawn of the church, as well as the park right next door, Heckshire Park, for some photos. Here's one of my favorite 'alone' pictures.

Here's one of my favorite 'together' pictures.

A good one of the entire bridal party together at the park.

A nice picture of all the boys. Our best man is a Naval Officer. The rest of the men got their tuxedos at Tuxedo Park, Huntington. We're going to rate them a 9.5

We actually ordered the tuxes at the Tuxedo Park in Carle Place. The man who helped us out there was great. We went there because of the 2 location convenience (DH lived near Carle Place and the wedding was near Huntington) and also because they could do alterations on the spot if necessary. The two things that dropped their score a little: 1. Their prices are definitely in the higher price range 2. The groomsmen were supposed to have bow ties, not tie ties.

Despite these two things, everything else was GREAT. Nothing fell apart or off from the tuxes, the sizes were all correct and besides the mix up with the ties which was probably an honest mistake, everything else was perfect. (I was relieved they were able to give DH a real bow tie, though, 'cause I think he looks really cute in it!) ;) Oh yeah--otherwise, they were SO on top of our order. DH's brother, despite our MANY emails, calls, and other reminders, didn't call in his sizes for the tux...until a week before the wedding! Tuxedo Park made us very aware of the situation and finally made the call to DH's brother in CA that finally got his butt in gear. I will also mention, ALL of the men, besides DH were from out of town and had NO PROBLEMS calling in their sizes and all their pick up and returns went smoothly. That's great customer service, so in the end I was still pleased with what we got!

An artsy shot in the park.

Since the next shot involves the Rolls Royce Princess we rented for the wedding, I'll move onto the transportation. It was provided by Ultimate Class Limousine, Hicksville, NY. Their score 9.8

Everything went extremely smoothly with Ultimate Class. My company had used them for many years, so I really didn't look elsewhere for my transportation needs. We rented the Princess Rolls, a white 10 person limo first for the girls and then for the BP, and we also had a black limo to bring DH, his parents and the boys the church. We also rented the big party bus to get all our guests at the hotels, bring them to the church, back to the hotels and then to the reception. The bus also picked up after the reception and a car (which we ended up not using) for DH and I after the party.

All in all, we were extremely pleased with the service we got--the drivers all knew where they were going, and apparently all were on time. The minor deduction was because one of the drivers sent my first BM down the aisle too soon...and really, it wasn't his job to coordinate my wedding. So, its not a big deal, in the grand scheme. When hiring Ultimate Class I realized I would be getting only a competitive price (not the highest, not the lowest). I was getting the piece of mind that I wouldn't have to worry about the transportation for the day of my wedding, and that was priceless to me. Everything was stocked, as promised, and everything was clean and neat for my guests and bridal party.

Onto the reception! The Woodlands gets another perfect 10, and if I could, I'd score them higher.

That was taken 'in the backyard.' = One of the things that really drew me to The Woodlands was that I felt like it was really, really nice 'home.' It was the first reception hall I looked at, and we knew it was the one, right from the start. I was set on having a one wedding at a time facility and because of the number of out of town guests we were having (including DH's family) I wanted it to be close to the church and have hotels conveniently located. Besides, being right off 135 and Jericho, made it just that much more convenient for the local guests as well. The Woodlands made my wedding dream come true! The drive up is so elegant, and the rest of the place doesn't dissappoint. Since its relatively new (they started doing weddings last summer) they didn't really have a reputation--at least not in the online wedding planning circles. I may be one of the first to say, that every one of my very high expectations were met or exceeded!

The staff was great and extremely helpful whenever I called and had questions. Despite the changes in personell from when I first booked to the execution of the event, I felt that everything was handled to the utmost professionalism and that everyone was on the same page.

Unfortunately, shortly after we started taking pictures out back, it started raining, so we didn't get to take full advantage of the BEAUTIFULl grounds--its so scerene! Actually, one of my biggest question marks about the whole day is whether or not I should have taken pictures at the park, or whether we should have gone STRAIGHT to the Woodlands. Oh well, nothing I can do now!

I digress. Originally, we were supposed to have the indoor/outdoor cocktail hour, but because of the iffy weather, the Woodlands set up everything inside. What I was very excited about was that the staff STILL dried off the outdoor furniture so my guests could still go outside (which many of them did). Since they were set up for everything to be inside, they had made the cocktail hour room larger, so with the outdoor space and inside space we REALLY had plenty of space and seats for everyone. There were two bars set up with I believe 2 bartenders each inside as well as staff passing around our 'exotic martinis' which were such a hit (and well worth the extra $$). I'm bummed I don't have any pictures of them, but they were really cool looking. We also got as an extra the flavor infused vodka, which was a specialty. We had two flavors, strawberry and pineapple--I only tried the strawberry, but man as a vodka lover, it was PHENOMINAL! The cocktail hour food was fabulous and plentiful, and the staff was quick on the upkeep (or clean up, if you prefer .) Here are some of my favorite indoor shots.

The attention to detail was marvelous. The bridal suite was fully stocked for us and the bridal attendant, Katie was wonderful. One thing that really made me happy--DH is a HUGE fan of Yuengling beer--the Woodlands doesn't usually have that (and Joe, the Banquet Manager hadn't even heard of it) in stock. When we walked into the bridal suite, the first thing Joe did (after congratulating us) was hand Aaron a Yuengling! As DH would say 'I was happy as a pig in mud' for the rest of the night.

This might be my favorite shot of the entire wedding.

Our Maitre D's were Antonio and Oscar and they were terrific. If you actually read my review of Burtons, you know that they gave me a bunch of flowers to decorate my cake. Well, Oscar was the designated person to do that, and it came out looking terrific! He even remembered to put my cake 'sider' on, which would have been EASY to forget since its so tiny!

During the cocktail hour, I grabbed Aaron so we could see the ballroom before everyone sat down and practice our first dance. I was SO happy with the way everything looked and was glad I had put the time in to personalize the wedding a bit. Here we are, alone on the dance floor.

Here's one half of the room set up for the party (PLENTY of room for bigger parties--we had about 155 people).

Some of the things we decided to do which made the wedding ours? Well, we decided to incorporate cycling into the reception a little. For all intents and purposes, the Lily of the Valley from my invite was carried throughout the wedding (on the church programs, menus, place cards). The cycling aspect was brought in in different ways. Here's one:

That was our grand entrance. If you were wondering, the plan was for us to ride in together, but we misjudged the girth of my dress. It was just not feasible to balance AND hold up my dress at the same time.

We also made special table numbers. Originally we were thinking of doing places in France we had visited last year at the tour, but then, we realized that we were going to have 17 tables at the reception. Not counting the pre-cancer wins, or the time trials, Lance Armstrong had won 17 stages of the Tour de France (Aaron proposed last year while we were over there, following the Tour and Lance). So, it only seemed appropriate we have each table # represent one of those stage wins. We included the stage profile along with the date, start and end towns and of course, a summary. Here's the final outcome (unfortunately it's not clear enough to read here.)

Believe it or not, the Woodlands uses these exact frames, but in a 3X5 size for the regular table #s. Because of the intricacy of OUR table #s, though, we wanted 5X7 sized frames. We looked all over and finally found THESE (we were looking for whatever was cheapest but not CHEAP looking) at MACE'S Close Out City in Farmingdale! I think they were less than $3--definitely the best price we found for that size. AND it went with the room's decor, so we were extremely proud of our find!

We also decided to make 2 donations on behalf of our guests for those who passed and those who have survived cancer. One donation was to the American Cancer Society, and the other was to the Lance Armstrong Foundation. We made yellow cards, two for each table with a poem letting our guests know which causes we were supporting. And, at the end of the night, everyone was asked to take a LIVESTRONG bracelet (yes, i know the fad is fading, but it just went SO well!)

Also, instead of a traditional guest book, I decided on doing a personalized platter from the Younique Boutique (youniqueboutique.com). Supposedly this size platter is appropriate for weddings of 150-200 people--but NOT if anyone writes more than his or her own name. Although I definitely don't have everyone's signature, it still looks good. For now, we have it sitting on our mantle as a nice reminder of our day. It was pricey, but worth it (and it came VERY quickly!)

Here's an example of the place cards with the Lilly of the Valley. The programs had the same image, as did the out of town guest bags, and the menus.

All of the Do it Yourself paper was purchased at Pick Quick Papers on Rt. 110. That place was my savior! I made almost all of the projects on 80lb paper so that it wouldn't be flopping around. Unfortunately, the biggest project, my menus, I didn't take any pictures of, nor did I save any. BIG regret there--I really liked the way they came out! I used a speckled light green card stock (80lb) on which we printed the Lily of the Valley. On top of that, we had a vellum overlay on which we printed the menu and tied the two papers together with an ivory ribbon. Simple, elegant, and they resembled the invitation.

Anyway, since my colors were peach, yellow and an azure blue, the colors Pick Quick kept in stock matched perfectly, and for the place cards, I used 88 lb paper, which was the thickest I could find in the store. The prices were identical to the online shops I checked out, and I didn't have to wait for anything to be shipped. If you are in a bind and need some paper, I'd definitely suggest that place. Also, for brides who are crafty or on a budget, they have some REALLY nice kits to do your own invites.

Back to the reception. We had our first dance to Moonlight Becomes You, by Bing Crosby. It's a nice, old romantic song that we both liked.

If you were thinking 'did they take dance lessons?' The answer is Yes, we did! We took some group lessons through Metropolitan Dance in Garden City, and had our private lessons with John, at Ballroom Dance Long Island. (516) 528-DANCE (3262)

Both DH and I thought our dance lessons were worth the price. We really enjoyed our dance lessons together as a pre-wedding stress reliever. We had so much fun learning new steps, making fun of one another...it was a blast! And looking back, we both feel that by taking the dance lessons, our first dance was as polished and refined as the rest of the day.

For the group lessons we learned about 6 dances, 4 well enough to look good dancing with one another. The teachers did the best with the constraints they had--people of different ability level, a large # of people, and space constraints. As I said earlier, though, we really enjoyed them, and it seemed like the majority of the couples really had a good time.

In terms of our private lessons--we had a total of 5- 45 minute lessons and we really could have done 4, but we opted for the fifth to 'polish' ourselves. Our first dance was not choreographed. John taught us a series of steps that went with the music so that we were able to put together what we learned to make a nice dance. I can honestly say, we never once practiced the dance the way we performed it that night. To me, that's the sign of a great teacher. I would recommend John to anyone!

The reception food and service was outstanding. One of the great rewards you receive when booking the Woodlands is the great satisfaction your guests will eat a lot, and have the opportunity to try new and different things. We had an incredibly tough decision deciding what to chose for the cocktail hour. Truth be told, the reception food was a bit easier to chose, because of our tasting. We went with the hot appetizer (Lobster Tempura) and salad (Asian pear, with mesclun greens, cashews and white balsamic) that we had while at the tasting, as well as the sirloin steak and talapia options for the main course. I know talapia isn't a fish that really is 'outstanding', but the way they served it was wonderful...it was different than the usual salmon, and I'm always weary about serving chilean sea bass (since it's always on and off the endangered species list). The chicken, which I insisted upon having (DH wanted duck) was a bit of a mystery, but in the end...it was great! I thought I was going to pop my zipper and I was pleased to see many of my guests ask for doggy bags.

I must also mention the presentation of the food. You can tell they take real pride in what they serve, because everything looks immaculate and each entree gets its own dressings and sides. Where else will you see an appetizer on a triangle plate? lol

Our wedding cake, from La Favorita in East Rockaway gets a 9.5 (house baker)

It was a very good cake, but it was pretty obvious they didn't typically work with a chocolate ganache as an outside. I had wanted a knock-your-socks off cake, but all we got was a very good, very fresh cake. It was a yellow cake with raspberry mousse on the inside. I think if I had asked for a more traditional white (either buttercream or whipped cream) outside I would have been a little happier with the cake.

Again, I will point out my cake sider from Pixishop.com in France. Boy, was that little sucker expensive, it worked out to about $10 per CENTIMETER! lol But come on, it was perfect for us, and perfect for the theme.

As for our entertainment, hiring a 'lesser known' band was an A+ decision. Peter Greco Productions gets another Perfect 10!
Here are some pictures from throughout the night..

I don't think I can write anything that will give these musicians enough credit for the work they do. I think the majority of us brides realize that the entertainment is probably one of the most important aspects of a wedding, and ours was definitely great. Peter Greco had the dance floor packed all night--I really wish I had had a longer reception so that we could have danced even more!
What's obvious about Peter and his band, is that they all truly love what they do. When the singers 'get into it' it's hard not to have a good time...and I can't tell you how many times Eartley, the main male singer was out there, dancing in the crowd! They were so much fun and played stuff from every generation!
Here are the the three main singers, Rachel, Eartley and Carla.

Here is the winning couple of our anniversary dance--married for 55 years! (isn't that dress priceless?)

After the reception, which ended at 11:30, we decided to extend the party to the golf bar. The after party lasted until 1am and at that point, we HAD to all leave! The Woodlands...it truly is catering to perfection!

Some more vendor reviews:
Executive Inn at Woodbury. 9.5 Dealing with this motel was better than I had expected, the rates were reasonable, the rooms clean, it was close to the venue, no real problems, just not impressive on the outside.
Inn at Plainview. 9.5 Unfortunately they weren't finished with their construction on time, but the rooms and staff are always top notch. We had the bridal suite and its a shame we spent the majority of our time there asleep. It is a really cool room! (The deduction is only because of the incompletion of the hotel.)

Rehearsal Dinner-9.3 La Casa Cafe at Crab Meadow Beach. Great food, HUGE portions, and reasonably priced. The biggest deduction is because they messed up one of our groomsmens orders, which happens, but unfortunately he didn't get it until literally we were all done eating (after waiting a little while to see if it would come out shortly). Our rehearsal was on a Thursday night, so even though we didn't have a private room, I think there was only 1 or 2 other tables of customers.

Shoes-Craft shoes in Commack for mine. 10. I'm NOT a shoe girl at all. They had a big selection, it was reasonably priced and the pair I chose didn't hurt my feet. That's all it takes for me.

Last, but not least is Silverfox. Their score is 9.8 I loved our photographers, Don and Franco. They have great personalities and captured a lot of great moments. They were both early, took tons of shots, and were nice to have around. Working with John at the studio is great too--we get along well 'cause he's a cyclist too! The deduction is simply because of the reception area of the studio... its their only flaw! Otherwise, I like their A LA carte menu of services and all our interaction with them, from the time of booking through today has been FANTASTIC!

Thank you for reading! FM me if you have any questions!
