My November 13, 2010, Mini Destination, New England, Fall with Touches of Winter Themed Wedding with Tons of Pics & LIW Vendors!!!

First I want to thank Ron, Liz, and Kim for keeping this site running. It has been an extremely valuable source of wedding information, and my wedding wouldn’t have been the same without LIW. Thank you to all the wonderful ladies on here. Your ideas have truly inspired me.

I didn't do anything higher than an A+ because I am anal, and needed some sort of finite system of grading to go by!

The Engagement A+
I totally knew that the engagement was happening that weekend, but it is so my personality to figure out surprises! When the Mom of the kids that I babysat for at the time asked what I was doing that weekend, I said “getting engaged.”

DH took me to the Plaza Hotel where we spent the night. We ordered room service for lunch shortly after we arrived, and DH had the butler put the ring on one of the covered platters. Even though I knew it was coming, I still cried. We had an awesome time. Later that night, we went out to dinner at the Sea Grille, which overlooks the skating rink at Rockefeller Centre.

We decided to take a horse and carriage ride through Central Park after that. It was a lot of fun, but it was also kind of a mistake. I am severely allergic to horses, but I wanted to go on the carriage so I didn’t care. When we got back to the hotel, we hung out at the champagne bar. The night ended with me having an allergic reaction and my eyes practically swelling shut, and DH throwing up from drinking too much. Nothing serious happened though, and we lived to laugh and tell about it!

The only thing that I had ever told DH about an engagement ring was that I wanted it to be white gold. He picked out the rest, and I absolutely love my ring. I think it’s gorgeous, and it actually matches perfectly with my wedding band, which was my Nan’s. DH had never seen my Nan’s wedding band before, so I really do think that fate/signs/etc. had some role here…because like I said, the rings match perfectly.
DH also asked my Dad if he could ask me to marry him, which I thought was just so cute!

Engagement Party
Amity Harbor Beach and Civic Association A-
Our engagement party really went off without a hitch. Everyone had a wonderful time. DH’s cousin played the guitar on the front lawn for my family. We set up a beer pong table on the deck on the water, and everyone had so much fun. The place is right on the water, so it was perfect for a summer time engagement party, especially since we were doing a luau theme. Also, the big front lawn was perfect for anyone who wanted to relax a little bit, and for the kids to run around and play. We bought bubbles, sand art, and balls.

The reason for the A- is that the day of, the man in charge of the building was a little bit rude to us. We had a five hour rental (3:00-8:00) and we arrived at 2:45. We wanted to make sure that we got into the building right at 3:00 to set up. Plus, we left early because we wanted to avoid traffic (which we hit a lot of!) When the man got there, he yelled at us and said “I told you to get here at 3:00!” and made us sit outside until it was 3:00PM, and then unlocked the doors. There was no one else in there, so he was just doing it to be rude. Despite that, I would absolutely recommend this venue for a party. We fit 100 people, so it could probably even be used for a wedding.

Bridal Shower
Lambrous in Island Park A+
My family has had all of their parties there for a long time. I had my communion, sweet 16, and college graduation party there, so it was only fitting that my parents would throw my shower in the same room. I love the feeling of being surrounded by family and friends, and not only did I have my own family and friends there, but I feel at home at Lambrous. They always do a nice job, and I like the food there a lot. I was nervous about opening gifts in front of people, so I went to the bar to do a shot beforehand. I got that drink on the house!

Favors: Cookies by the Sugar Chic A+
When I had a cookie from the Sugar Chic at the 2010 Wedding of the Year, I knew that I had to use these cookies for something! They were absolutely delicious, and they came out so beautifully. I told my Mom that I wanted them, so she had me pick out the design, and then she and my Dad snuck off one day to pick them up. Guests were commenting on how absolutely delicious they were, and how adorable they were.

My Mom also made a teddy bear for each BP member.

Bachelorette Party in Atlantic City A+
My MOH really went above and beyond to plan an amazing bachelorette party weekend for me. I went to AC with her, my other MOH, three of my BM, and five of my other friends, and we had such a blast. We went out to the bars, gambled, walked on the boardwalk, ate at Carmine’s, and so much more. I think some things are a bit too risqué to post, but we had an amazing time!

Save the Dates Magnet Street A+
Since we were having an out of state wedding, it was imperative that we have save the dates. We went to a local park one day and my friend took our pictures. He sent us the files, we picked our favorites, and he edited them. We used two pictures of us plus a picture of two of our cats, Oliver and Cow, dressed in a tuxedo/top hat and a wedding gown/veil that my Mom made for them.

Registry: Bed, Bath, and Beyond A-
I didn’t have any issues with my registry or anything like that, and if I had to do it all over again, I would absolutely register with them. However, at one point, there were a million items on my registry that were “not available for online purchase.” I called the store and I asked if that meant that they were not available for online purchase, if they were not available for the time being, or if they would never be available again both in the store and online. They said that they had no idea. Well, that was extremely unhelpful, since it meant that I had to take all of if off my registry and re-register for new stuff. I don’t know if I even had to do that, but since they “couldn’t tell me” if these items were out of stock, I had to.

Aside from that though, I always found everyone extremely helpful and I am very happy with all of the items that I received.

Wedding Website, Weddingwire.com A+
I found the website format there to be extremely easy to use. There was a ton of space to add whatever I wanted to add. I don’t think that a wedding website is a “necessary” item; however, we found it very useful since all of our guests were out of towners. Everyone was able to check to see what was going on, and what information they needed to know about travel/hotels/etc.

We had over 3000 views, so it absolutely was used.

Pre Cana, Blessed Sacrament A+
I would strongly recommend attending Blessed Sacrament for Pre Cana. It is run by one of the Deacons in the parish and his wife. I think it is wonderful that a married couple is running a program for soon-to-be married couples. They know what they are talking about.

Furthermore, I liked Pre Cana in general. I thought that it was really an opportunity to grow as a couple and to talk about issues that we normally would not have talked about. No, I don’t agree with every last thing that we were taught, but I would say that I agree with about 90 percent of it. I think people get a poor attitude about Pre Cana sometimes; however, how often do you go to any sort of lecture, meeting, discussion, group, activity, etc. and agree with 100 percent of what is said? Probably not too often.

Wedding Day
Invitations, E*v*e*n*s*t*a*r*p*a*p*e*r*i*e A+ for Invitations/B- for Service
I really thought that my invitations were absolutely stunning. We have a family friend who was in the printing business for years upon years, and he said that he had never seen such gorgeous invitations before. I knew that I wanted something a bit unique, but still with a lot of class. I had seen invitations somewhat similar to what we had, but they were kind of “cartoony.” T*ess*a turned them into a beautiful work of art. She also worked with my budget. I am extremely, extremely happy with what we paid.

When we switched from a reception hall ceremony site to a Church service, it was right before our invitations were slated to come. I was not going to pay to have them all redone, so my plan was to just put an insert saying that that ceremony location had been changed. It was not my ideal plan, but it was what was going to have to happen. Would you believe it though…I emailed Tessa to ask if there was anyway it could be fixed, and as it turned out, there was a problem with the paper and they weren’t even done yet!

I am giving her a B- for service because of a couple of things. I told her that I wanted the invitations to say “honour of your presence” and “(my Dad’s first name) and (my Mom’s first name) (my parents’ last name).” She told me that it HAD to be Mr. & Mrs. (Dad’s first name) (parents’ last name) if I wanted to use “honour of your presence.” She would not budge, because she said it was etiquette. Excuse me, but I am paying for these. The wording should be how I want it to be. Furthermore, she did not send me enough of one of the inserts, and then said that I probably just put too many in one envelope. She wasn’t nasty about it, and she said she would send me more…but she never did. A few other times that I tried to email her, she didn’t respond…and that bothers me.

I brought the invitation in the pic with me up to CT...so you will notice that it is slightly creased. They were not like that at all, that is just what happened from traveling with it.

DH’s Wedding Gift
B-pics by Kamila Harris B-

I LOVE how my B-pics came out, don’t get me wrong there. DH loves them as well. I never thought I would have the confidence to take pictures of this nature, and Kamila absolutely made me feel comfortable. Her work is great, and she is a sweet girl. However, there were some problems. First of all, she had an assistant that kept giving me weird looks. I am not sure what her issue was, but it was annoying. Now, this is a little thing, but I have to mention it. In the contract, it states that light snacks would be provided. I know it sounds ridiculous, but I was slightly annoyed when we arrived and there were no light snacks. I did not eat the morning of or during the drive down there because I figured I’d have a snack when we got there. I was starving! I left while the other girls were doing their pictures to go buy some food. It’s not the fact that I was hungry, it’s the fact that when I sign a contract, I expect to get what is in the contract. It could have been anything, and I would have been annoyed no matter what it was.

I would not give someone a B- for dirty looks and lack of snacks, however. What really bothered me was trying to get in touch with Kamila when I was ready to select my pictures. I picked my photos a few months after I did them; therefore, I KNEW I wouldn’t have them in time for the wedding. I was fine with that, as I didn’t want to carry these pictures of me up to Connecticut anyway. I emailed her my choices, and I never heard back from her. About a month later-after I contacted her again-she said she had answered me, but she was having problems with her email. I had heard her say that before when I was trying to figure out a date to go there, so I was a bit skeptical. Once we confirmed the photos, she said they would be ready next week. Next week came and went. This happened for awhile. She would say they would be ready next week. I’d never hear anything that they were sent. I’d email her and get no response. I’d email her a second time and get a response that she was sick, away, having email problems, etc. She’d say they would be ready next week, etc. It was getting ridiculous.

I’d like to do B-pics again when day because it was a lot of fun; however, I would not use Kamila.

Rehearsal Dinner, Nellie Green’s, A+
The rehearsal itself was a bit of a fiasco. There was horrendous traffic on I-95, and we were pretty much texting our entire bridal party at once to figure out where everyone was. There was certainly more than a little bit of pandemonium throughout the rehearsal, but we made it through!

The restaurant where we had the dinner was just amazing. People could not stop raving about the food. We had a full open bar for three hours, buffet style appetizers, buffet for dinner, and chocolate fondue for dessert. It was one of the groomsmen’s birthdays, so they brought out a piece of cake for him and we all sang “Happy Birthday.” We had such a blast the night before the wedding. After the rehearsal dinner, a bunch of the “younger folks” went to the bar located in the parking lot of the hotel. I remember when we got back to the hotel, everyone was so riotous! I remember screaming “It’s 1AM the morning of the wedding, and the bride is drunk and the bridal party is wasted!!!” It was quite amusing.

Bridal Party Gifts and Parent Gifts, A+
We got these from a variety of sources, and I really do not remember where we got them all from. However, just to give people an idea of what we got…DH got the guys personalized money clips and something else that I am totally blanking on…whoops! He got the BMs a bottle of their favorite liquor in addition to those two other items. I got all of my girls a Stila lip glaze set, a Philosophy bath set, and a monogrammed bracelet. My two MOHs also got Lolita wine glasses. We gave the JR GMs monogrammed animal blankets and piggy banks. Our RB got a ring boy teddy bear and a monogrammed piggy bank. Our JR BM got a bag and a monogrammed bracelet, and our FG got a flower girl doll and a personalized bracelet. We also got our readers and Eucharistic ministers little angel ornaments. We got my Uncle, our photographer, a leather wallet.

For the parents, we got my ILs a cat themed set for the bathroom. My Mom got a spa set and we got my Dad a horse statue, as he loves horses.

The Weather A+
Seriously, we could not have asked for better wedding. I knew that booking a wedding in November was taking at least a little bit of a gamble. We found out that there had been three inches of snow in a rural area of Connecticut not too far away from where our wedding was held only a few days before! However, the skies were bright and sunny all day long, and I’d say that the temperature was in the low 60s throughout the day. We were not too cold or too hot at all. It was truly a perfect day for weather. Of course, it got cold at night, but by that time, most of the people were inside.

Saint Mary’s Church of the Visitation A+
Ok, seriously, I don’t really think that you can rate a Church but since it’s an A+, I think it’s ok! Saint Mary’s and Father Michael were so accommodating to us. As some of you know, we decided only a few months before the wedding that we wanted to get married in the Catholic Church. Not only did we only have a few months, but we also really wanted the Episcopalian Reverend that was originally going to marry us at the hall be allowed to participate in the ceremony. Well, Father Michael told me that he would do anything that he could for us to have a Catholic wedding. I will never, ever forget those words. To me, he really truly exemplified the Christian spirit by saying that and I am so proud to have been married there.

Aside from their generosity, Saint Mary’s is also a beautiful Church in a country setting by the Connecticut shoreline. Everyone was commenting on the beauty of the Church. We had-what I thought-was a huge turnout at the Church. There were probably around just under 200 people there. During Communion, I felt so happy watching everyone walk up because I saw how many people came out to see us get married.

Ceremony Music, Cantor and Organist from Saint Mary’s A+
I thought that Barbara and John did a great job singing and playing at the Mass. DH & I really sat down and picked out the songs that would have meaning to us, and it was great to hear the words and tunes play out at the different parts of the Mass.

Reverend David James A
As I mentioned, we were originally going to get married in the reception hall. Reverend David James would have been our officiant. We really felt a great connection with him when we met with him though, and we still wanted to include him in our wedding day. Since he is Episcopalian, he could not actually perform the Sacrament of Holy Matrimony for us. However, he did the second reading and he did the Homily.

He spoke beautifully and people commented on how he sounded as though he had known us for years. His Homily was poignant and to the point, yet also emotional and touching. He sounded as though he put a lot of effort into writing this Homily for us. I am looking forward to hearing it on the video. The only reason that I gave him an A instead of an A+ is because I had asked him to please include the fact that I was using my Grandmother’s wedding ring in the Homily, and he did not. That was very important to me, so I’m not sure why it wasn’t mentioned.

Memorial Candle, Enlightened Words, A+
I have always been so upset by the fact that none of my Grandparents were living to be at my wedding and that two of DH’s Grandparents weren’t either. Therefore, the memorial candle was an extremely important part of our day. Ours had butterflies on it, which was so amazing for me. See, since my Gramps passed away, monarch butterflies have always been a sign of his presence. Therefore, it was so perfect that I was able to find a memorial candle with butterflies on it. We had a beautiful verse from the Bible about how one day, there will be no more sadness and how we will all be reunited again. Our Grandparents names were written on the candle.

We lit the candle during the ceremony, just the two of us. I felt that it was a very special and private moment. At the reception, we placed the candle, along with pictures of our Grandparents, on the mantle of the fireplace. Next to that, we had a copy of our programs, which had a memorial poem that I wrote on the front cover.

Programs, Myself, A-
I would have liked to have had programs professionally made; however, by the time it came down to be able to do them, it would have cost an arm and a leg for what I wanted to have done. I had a very specific format that I wanted to follow. Therefore, I decided that I would DIY them. I had a number of people help me, and I am so incredibly grateful for their help. I thought that for what we had, we all did a really great job.

At the end of the day, I got all of the information that I wanted on there, and they were in very vibrant colors. So many elements of our wedding were so formal, that I think it was OK that the programs were a bit “craftsy,” so to speak. Our ceremony lasted for an hour, and I knew that the programs were going to be thrown away afterwards; therefore, it did not bother me so much that they were not professionally made. The A- is only because I wish I would have budgeted for them better!

Ebay Seller, Ring Boy Pillow and Flower Girl Basket A+
I wanted something really cute for the kids to carry down the aisle. We wound up with a matching satin pillow and basket. They both had little studs on them, and the flower girl basket had a beautiful bow. I put silk white petals in the basket.

Here Comes the Bride Sign, Etsy Seller ExclusiveElements A+
We had two junior groomsmen in our bridal party, and I wanted them to carry a sign down the aisle. It was white with chocolate brown lettering, and it matched perfectly. Everyone thought that the little boys looked so adorable walking down the aisle.

Custom Aisle Runner, Etsy Seller StarryNightDesign A+
StarryNightDesign was really one of my favorite vendors to work with. I feel like she completely got my vision, and she was always so prompt in answering questions that I had. I wanted to have the aisle runner go with the theme of the wedding. The majority of it was white; however, it had hand painted leaves in several different spots. She worked with our budget as well to give us a beautiful aisle runner. It was really one of my favorite little details of the day!

Bubbles, Wedrev.com A+
The Reverend has a storefront on his wedding site; therefore, I purchased the bubbles from him. We got an array of different types-butterflies, champagne bottles, mini wedding cakes, etc. I thought they were very cute, and we have a bunch leftover. I’m not sure what I’ll use them for, but I’ll figure it out eventually!
I was glad that they actually got used. People seemed really excited about blowing the bubbles, and we had a crowd all set and ready to go when we walked out of the Church. I’m excited to see the video footage of the bubble blowing because I know he got some great shots!

Baskets and Ribbons, Michael’s and LIW gal, A+
I realized that I needed baskets to put my programs and our flip flops/Chinese slippers in. Therefore, I got some plain wooden baskets from Michaels-I felt like they were very fall-like and they were kind of like apple picking baskets. I had a couple from a girl on here too, but I can’t remember who it was! Whoever you were, thank you!!!
I bought some blue ribbon and tied the ribbon around the handle of the baskets to decorate them a little bit.

Flip Flops and Chinese Slippers, Old Navy and BeWild.com A-
There was absolutely NOTHING wrong with the flip flops or slippers. Everyone who wore them loved them, and there are a ton of pictures of people wearing both the slippers and flip flops. I was torn about what to do, because it was going to be chilly, so I knew that some people wouldn’t want flip flops. Furthermore, the only color that Old Navy had left was blue. I ordered a bunch of the blue, but I knew some people might want a color that matches different outfits better. Therefore, I also got black Chinese slippers from BeWild.com.

I’m giving this idea an A- because I purchased way too many slippers/flip flops. I had 250 guests, and I got approximately 100 pairs total. Ladies, do not get that many. Not everyone is going to take a pair. Furthermore, if you run out of flip flops/slippers, it is definitely not the worst thing in the world. Remember, these are an accessory, not a necessity. Take it easy on yourself and do not buy as many as I did!

Bathroom Basket, A
I cannot remember at all where I purchased this item from. However, I just *had* to have a bathroom basket that matched the rest of the wedding. Therefore, I ordered one that was Tiffany blue with a white ribbon around it. Online, it looked huge; however, when it arrived, it was kind of small. For a $40 basket, I was really expecting something a little bigger!

Still though, now I have an adorable basket to decorate my house with once I unpack all of the wedding stuff! I put the items to put it from CVS, and I think we have some of those leftover as well.

Day Of Hoodie and Sweats, Customized Girl, A+
I wanted a “Mrs. ______ Est. _____” hoodie and matching sweatpants, but since I’m a plus sized girl, I was having a lot of trouble finding them! I knew I wanted the clothing to be nice and loose, since I would be wearing it and moving around it in for awhile on the morning of the wedding.

One day, my Dad came home from work with the customizedgirl website, which I thought was SO sweet of him! He said that they had bigger sizes, so I checked it out. I got a grey hoodie with baby blue wording on it, and grey sweatpants with a heart on them. I still wear them around the house sometimes, so I absolutely got my money’s worth out of them!

Signature Cocktail Signs, Etsy Seller PitaKit A+
I didn’t want to do anything too fancy with the signature cocktails, as I didn’t want to have to pay for any more liquor than we already had at the bar! Therefore, I decided to go with an Appletini for the fall, and then the Godfather and the Godmother drinks. The signs were cute, simple and just enough.

Photographer, my Uncle A+
Of course, I’m going to give my Uncle an A+, and he really, absolutely deserved it. He used to be a professional photographer, but he hasn’t shot a wedding in a couple of decades. He offered to do our photography, and we gladly accepted. He really was awesome though. I love how our pictures turned out, and we got thousands of photos…he captured everything.

My Uncle DOES NOT wake up early, so I just asked him to be with the girls by 11:00AM. However, he was there between 9:30 and 10:00, along with our videographer and the hair stylist. He took pictures all the way up until the very end of the night. I was a little bit concerned, because I also wanted him to have fun! Thankfully though, he did, and he got great pictures.

Plaque, My Sweet Memories, A+
I really think that these are so gorgeous and such an excellent touch to the day. We had ours made with our new last name, the date of our wedding, and a quotation from the Bible. I was extremely happy with it, and I thought that the colors on it were so vibrant. We had guests commenting on how beautiful it was.

Infinite Video A +
We had a lot of great vendors, but Mike at Infinite Video really just blew everyone out of the water. If I believed in giving higher than an “A+,” I would give him an infinite amount of +s (no pun intended!). We don’t have our video yet, but I’m not concerned about it at all. However, I will update this when we get it to tell you all what a phenomenal job he did with the video. Mike arrived between 9:00 and 10AM; I don’t remember the exact time, because I wasn’t really looking at clocks that morning too much. However, I asked just asked him to arrive by 11:00AM at the latest, so he arrived quite early. He was with us the entire day until our reception ended at 1:00AM.

Aside from being so generous with time with us, what was truly great about Mike was that we never had to find him. I think that a true mark of a professional vendor is that he or she just knows where to be; you never have to go and search for that person, and the person just knows what to do. Mike just always knew where he was supposed to be. It was almost magical! Anytime I thought “I hope this is on video,” I would turn around, and Mike was right there already filming. You would think that he has been doing this for hundreds of years. Even members of our bridal party were commenting on how awesome he was. Like I said, the true mark of a professional is that he just knows what to do. anyone is still looking for a videographer, please consider booking with Infinite Video. I’m telling you, you are not going to find any better videographers-or vendors-than him.

I felt like he really went above and beyond. He was really coordinating all of the shots, and he worked so well with my Uncle. I’m almost positive that at some point the train of my dress was dragging on the ground, and he was the one who came over and picked it up for me. He’s the best of the best.

Bouquets by my Mom A+
I knew from the getgo that I didn’t want flowers. I didn’t want floral centerpieces and I didn’t want to carry flowers down the aisle. It’s not that I hate flowers or anything-I just didn’t want them. And thus began the dilemma of what the girls and I were going to carry down the aisle. One day, at a bridal shop, we saw these beautiful bouquets made out of crystals and tulle. The price was crazy though…especially if I would need one for every female member of our huge bridal party. Therefore, my Mom decided to make them.
I thought that they came out absolutely beautifully! She used tulle and Swarovski crystals to recreate what we saw in the store that day. I could not have been happier with my bouquet.

After Hours Entertainment A-
I’d like to give them an A or an A+ but I just can’t. My Dad had recorded himself singing “Butterfly Kisses” as a special surprise for me during the father/daughter dance. My Dad and I are very close and this was very emotional for both of us. I was so happy. However, the song was cut off before the last verse…which my Dad had actually personalized for us. He got very upset and I got very upset. Our MC told three separate individuals (including myself and my husband) that the reason he cut it off was because he thought I was giving him a “look” to stop the song. I wasn’t doing that at all. They did play it again later, although it was no longer the father/daughter dance.

This problem continued…which is the part that bothered me…Phil asked me how the wedding went. I told him what happened, and he talked to the MC and the MC told Phil that they stopped it because there was a pause in the song and they thought that it was over. This was not what we were told at the wedding. I get very uncomfortable when I know what happened, but then another version of the story appears.

Aside from that, After Hours did a fantastic job at keeping the crowds on the dance floor all night. They did not play all of our must play songs, but they still played excellent music, so it made up for that. People could barely get onto the dance floor (even though it was quite big!) because there were so many people out dancing. A blast was had by all, and if it had not been for the rather odd miscommunication, they would have received an A+.

We had a very big package, with a live singer, photo montage of baby pictures, DJ, MC, and zap shots. For the mother/son dance, we had a video played of DH’s Grandfather singing. He was an amazing singer and he always sang at all of the family and friends’ weddings, but he passed away a year and a few months before we were married. We wanted him to be there with us, and he certainly was. Aside from the couple of glitches, After Hours did an excellent job of carrying out all of the various components.

Days Inn C
I have gone back and forth with how to rate the hotel. While we stayed there, the staff was SO friendly to us that they made us really feel like family. The husband and wife who live at the hotel kept coming in to check on us, and the staff really did a great job with our hospitality station between the Church and the reception, as well as the breakfast that we had the morning after. We hung out in the lobby with some of the employees, and they were extremely welcoming to us. This was A+ service; however, the problems that we encountered lowered the score. The atmosphere was great too, because we had a private building in the back and everyone was up late partying in that building and at the bar that shares a parking lot with the hotel.

However, in the year or so before in which we had booked the hotel, there were a plethora of problems. Whenever I would confirm the reservations, there would be a problem. They would not tell us how many rooms were available for us to still block. When people would call to confirm their reservations, they would be told that the rooms were “not there.” We are still not quite sure how a room could vanish. When we arrived, there was a stump of a tree holding up the bed in our suite. That was pretty funny, but still, I mean really? A tree trunk?

My parents found a beehive with live bees in their room, there was a roach crawling in ours, and a family with a little boy was checked into a room with stains on the carpet and wires hanging out of the wall. Obviously, that was not safe for a child!

Furthermore, DH & I went out for the day before everyone else arrived, and when we returned, a bottle of my perfume was missing. My parents told the front desk and they said that they had never had a problem before. However, we looked over the entire room and went through all of our luggage when we got home. My perfume was never found. Clearly, someone either stole or broke my perfume.

Cake by Luigi’s Italian Pastries A-
I only got to eat a very small piece of the cake, and I’m pretty sure that was not until we were back in New York. I thought it was delicious, and the people who had it said that it was as well. The cake did not look exactly as we had discussed when we went to the bakery though. I am almost 100 percent positive that we had selected large, fondant bows, not the tiny ones that were on the cake. I still thought that our cake was beautiful, but I really wanted big bows on it.

Furthermore, the inside of the roses on the cake were supposed to be dyed the color of the maid of honor dresses. I brought them that swatch, but they did not put the blue inside of the roses.

Groom’s Cake by Luigi’s Italian Pastries A-
The groom’s cake-a replica of Yankee stadium-was absolutely amazing. I thought it came out so well, and DH was so incredibly surprised. My Dad thought it was awesome too, and we had people coming up to take pictures with it. The only reason that I am giving it an A- though is because it was never cut up the night of the wedding! I do not know if the bakery told The WoodWinds that it wasn’t supposed to be, or if The WoodWinds made the decision not to. In any case, it was really a bad decision. I was out dancing, so I assumed that the cake was just cut up and served to the guests while they were seated. Nope! We took this huge cake back to the hotel with us, and some people ate it at the after party and some ate it the next morning at breakfast. It was gigantic though, and by the time we got it back to New York, it was spoiled. I was really upset about that, and so was DH. Every time we see a picture of that cake, he gets upset and says “God bless it.” The worst part is, we were not given a box or anything with the cake!

Camelot Limos A+
Joe is really a great guy. When we switched from the reception hall ceremony to the Church ceremony, we had a LOT of changes to make. We went way over budget for transportation; so originally, the limo was only going to shuttle back and forth from one hotel. However, we found out later on that the driver went back and forth from both hotels. I was really happy about that, as I thought that was a great example of someone going above and beyond.

The limos were clean, and the limo drivers were very helpful with getting us all situated and in and out of the limo. They were very punctual as well. We did not need to leave until 1:00PM; however, the limos pulled up into the driveway at the hotel around 11:00AM. Once again, I was very happy to see that, because I knew they had left early since they had to travel to Connecticut.

Hair by Keri Anne Shea A/A+
Keri is really a doll. She’s one of the sweetest people to work with. I really do think that having her and Mike from Infinite Video around from 9:00AMish was such a breath of fresh air. They both seemed like old friends to me, and they helped to make the atmosphere so comfortable. We were all laughing and joking around, and it was really just a great way to start off the morning.

I LOVE how my hair looked when it was first done. However, I’ve noticed in pictures that a couple of hours before the night ended, my hair started to fall out and de-poof. When I had my trial done, the style lasted all through the night and I had some of it still in when I woke up the next morning. Now, my hair looked gorgeous for the majority of the day, so I wouldn’t give lower than an A. I say A/A+ because honestly, I do not know why my hair fell out. When I was walking down the aisle with DH after we got married, someone stepped on my veil and my head snapped back and the comb really tugged at my hair. After that, a couple of people tried to fix it and assured me that it looked OK. However, I think that might’ve been my hairs downfall.

I will never really know what happened, but I do know that the style held longer after the trial than after the real thing. Like I said though, I don’t know exactly where the fault lies there. If I ever had the need to hire someone to do my hair again, I’d hire Kerri Anne without any hesitation.

Makeup, Sephora Products, Done by Me A+
I hate when people touch my face. It freaks me out beyond belief. Therefore, I was in no way, shape, or form having my makeup professionally done. I bought all of the products that I used from Sephora, and I had no problems. In between the Church and picture taking at The WoodWinds, I had time to fix my makeup, so I basically just redid it. I am pretty sure that it would have stayed on all night regardless, but I am obsessive with my makeup, so I felt the need to redo it.

Shoes, Shoebuy.com A+
I cannot wear heels. I fall like a fool. However, I did not want to wear dowdy shoes on my wedding day! I wanted them to be cute and comfortable…and heelless! I also wanted them to be white and to have a bow on the front of them. Not picky at all right? Anyway, I was having a really hard time finding shoes that I loved, when one of the girls on here suggested that I check out a pair on Shoebuy. They were absolutely perfect and better yet, the website was having a sale and they were only $20!

Originally, I was going to buy flip flops to change into because I was sure that my shoes would eventually start hurting me. Well, I put my shoes on around 1:00PM and I did not take them off until 5:00AM, and I did not have an ounce of pain! I was completely happy with my purchase.

Gown from Fantasia Bridal A+
I went to 10 different shops to try on dresses. Not only was I browsing for the perfect dress, but I was browsing for the perfect shop to buy the dress from. I knew that I wanted the people to be professional, dedicated, and kind. Well, you are not going to find sweeter ladies than the ones who work at Fantasia. They know exactly what they are talking about, and exactly what to do. The seamstress there is beyond talented. I drove 1.5 hours each way to this shop for my fittings, and I would do it again.

My only regret is that I did not hire one of these women to come and dress me the day of the wedding. When I was at the shop, my dress looked absolutely stunning on me. I think it looked amazing the day of the wedding, but it looked better at the shop-and I will always be a little bit sad about that. My dress was not corseted properly at all. I kept saying that the top was too big, but the DOC did not want to mess up how the corset looked in the back. However, I would rather have had the corset not look perfect (which…I don’t understand why that would’ve happened, it was fine in the store) than to have my chest hanging out in Church.
In the Church pictures, if you look closely, you will see that the top is terribly screwed up. My MOH fixed it for me before the reception. However, she was not the one in charge of doing the dress; therefore, it was a last minute thing. Thankfully, she is pretty good with that kind of stuff. The dress was still a little big on top for the reception, but it was much better than at the Church.

Furthermore, the seamstress created a beautiful bustle for me, and my dress was not bustled properly at all during the reception. I was upset because I was told that my DOC knew how to corset and bustle. I wish she would’ve just told me that there are certain styles that she cannot do. Had I have known, I would’ve just hired someone from the store to dress me.

Headpiece, Fantasia Bridal, A+
I knew that I wanted a tiara; however, I also knew that I did not want something too ornate. I found a tiara that had a very low rise to it, and it was absolutely perfect! I feel like it really helped me to obtain the look that I was going for.

My Gown: Maggie Sottero Hampton A+
One of the best pieces of advice that I can give out is that, despite what size you are, you CAN find your dream gown. I tried on many, many plus sized gowns and NONE of them were what I was looking for. I ordered a size 28 for my gown, but I squeezed myself into size 16 samples because I knew that I wanted a “regular” dress. I think it’s a terrible shame that many designers try to limit their selling audience, but what can we do? Do not give up hope on your dream gown.
I absolutely loved, loved, loved my dress. I thought it was incredibly flattering and it was the princess dress that I have always dreamed of. I had part of it customized…as I had Maggie Sottero rosettes sewn into the pickups. It was just perfect…everything that I have ever dreamed of and imagined.

Yes, sure, I wish I could wear it again. However, I usually buy a new dress for every event that I go to, so I am kind of already trained to not to want to wear dresses again! However, it would certainly be fun! And I have to thank Nina for pointing me in the direction of Hampton!!! I am forever grateful!

Georgettes A+
Without getting too much into underwear here, if you need a certain type of bra, you HAVE to go to Georgettes in Hicksville. They are absolutely fantastic there!

Something Old, Something New, Something Borrowed, Something Blue A+
The closer that I got to my actual wedding date, the more I wanted to participate in the traditions! My something old was my Nan’s wedding ring, something new was my dress, something borrowed was my Dad’s “Daddy’s Little Girl” charm that I had put on a bracelet, and my something blue were undies!

Out of Town Packages, 99 Cents Store, A+
I needed to make 100 out of town packages, so I really needed to be economical about it! DH & I went to the 99 cent store, and we got some candies to put in the bags. We were also able to get a great deal on cookies in the shape of Maple leaves, which was just perfect for the theme of our wedding!

I really could not justify spending $100 on bags. Therefore, I purchased red cellophane and white and brown ribbon. I cut up the cellophane, wrapped it around the treats, and tied it together with the ribbon. My friend helped me, and the bags actually turned out really, really cute!

Favors, Cudge.net, A+
This website is a hidden gem. They have so many cute little items for absolutely unbeatable prices. I was all set to order my favors from a pricier site, and then I found this. I was able to give all of my guests both one container of maple syrup and one jar of jam each.
I purchased blue organized bags and wrapped them up myself, with some help from my MOH.

Maid of Honor, Matron of Honor, Junior Bridesmaid, and Bridesmaids’ Dresses, Alexandra Boutique B+
I wanted something simple for my bridesmaids’ dresses, since my gown was so elaborate. I also wanted to keep them classy, and I didn’t want something that is going to look totally dated in 10 years. They also ranged from 4 foot 11 to 6 foot 2, and are all different sizes. I wanted a dress that would allow them to wear the top as they wanted (straps, thin straps, thick straps), but wanted the dress to be the same. I told them to do their hair and makeup as they wanted, and to wear whatever shoes and jewelry that they would like.

This shop had the widest selection of BM dresses that we saw anywhere. The downside is that they do not do alterations. However, we found a Saison Blanche style that was just perfect. The top was scalloped with a sweetheart neckline, so it was not entirely plain. However, the bottom was simple and classy. My MOHs wore baby blue with a brown sash, and my BMs wore chocolate brown with a caramel sash. I thought that they all looked great in the dresses.

The reason that I gave them a B+ is doubefold. First of all, the owner/manager/someone in charge made a very rude comment to my Jr. BM. I’m not posting it here, because it isn’t for all the world to know…but it was not nice. I don’t think he realized what he was saying, but he really should’ve realized it. Furthermore, on the receipts that the girls got, it said that they had 14 days from the time that the dresses arrived to pick them up. When the dresses came in, we got an email (on a Friday) that they had one week to pick up their dresses. Now, everyone already had plans for the weekend and work the following week, so that was just not possible. I had a little bit of trouble contacting them at first, but finally it was resolved and they had 14 weeks. The panic was unnecessary though, and they should be aware of what their receipts say.

Mother of the Bride and Flower Girl Dresses, Beautiful Bride B
Everyone was very happy with the dresses; however, I am not terribly pleased with the service. My Mom’s dress was really stunning, and the flower girl looked like a little bride. Both dresses were gorgeous, and people commented on both. My Mom does not like colors at all, and really wanted to wear black. I was a little iffy, because I personally am not a fan of black for a wedding color. However, she found a gown that was really classy and had a lot of flair-and a flower on it-and it was just perfect.

The flower girl’s dress looked a lot like mine. I love the pictures of us together…she kind of looks like a miniature me and I think it’s so adorable. Her dress had pickups and rosettes-just like mine did. Her dress comes with the option of colored rosettes, but I prefer the bride and flower girl to be in all white (or ivory, diamond white, what have you!)

I was less than pleased with the alterations. I wasn’t able to make all of my Mom’s fittings, but I know she was unhappy. The dress was shorter on one side than the other, which was clearly not how it was supposed to be. I didn’t witness this firsthand with my Mom, but when I went for my flower girl’s fittings, I almost felt like they were rushing the fitting process and just wanted us to get out ASAP.

Mother of the Groom Dress, Totally You in Bellmore A+
I went with my MIL when she purchased her gown. She wasn’t too sure what she wanted, but they were really able to help her find something. Her gown was gorgeous and it complimented the colors of the wedding. MIL was rather sick in the weeks leading up to the wedding, and, to the best of my knowledge, they were very accommodating with alterations and such.

Bonaventure Tuxedo A+
Here is another vendor that really deserves a gigantic round of applause. We worked with Andrew, and he is extremely professional and very kind. The junior groomsmen, groomsmen, DH, and my Dad all got their tuxedos from here. Not one person had a problem with their tux, and I thought everyone looked spectacular.
We did not look at other tuxedo companies at all. I had written an article on them for an online newspaper, so I really got a “behind the scenes” look. Therefore, I had no qualms whatsoever about using them. If/when we need tuxes again in the future, we would certainly go back.

Centerpieces, Fancy Schmancy, A+
Figuring out centerpieces became the bane of my existence for awhile. As I said earlier, I absolutely did not want flowers in any way, shape, or form, and that included on the tables. At first, I had picked out these centerpieces that I am not going to even give details about because I am so embarrassed by them. I thought they were adorable at first and I had ordered them online for a great price, but as the wedding drew closer, I panicked!

I was a crazy bride in the last few months…between getting new centerpieces a month and a half before the wedding and changing the ceremony to a Church three months before the wedding! Anyway, Fancy Schmancy is owned by a family friend of DH’s. I went to his house, we brainstormed, got the materials together, and he created exquisite centerpieces for the wedding. I am seriously in love with what he put together. It was the perfect blend of fall and winter that I was hoping for.

Photo Sharing Cards, Shutterfly B
The cards themselves were fine, but I am giving this idea a B. Honestly, it does sound like we have had better success than some…I’ve heard of many people only getting one person who uploaded photos. We have had about five or so; however, we had about 250 guests at our wedding.

Would I do it again? Well, yes, probably…I think it was worth it since we did get some pictures. However, I don’t want to give it a “high score” when it was certainly not the most successful idea in the world.

Customized Menus, Family Friend, A+
All of our guests had to pick out their meals before the actual day of the wedding. I think that is somewhat common in out of state weddings. Therefore, I did not want to get one menu per person. If they had a choice on the day of, I would’ve, but I did not think that it was necessary.

Therefore, a family friend is in the business, so she was able to make one menu per table for me They had leaves on them, so they went along with our theme. It was fine because no one really needed a menu anyway, but I’m glad that I did them because they add an extra little touch to the tables.

Personalized Cake Topper, Etsy seller EnchantedYou54449 B-
We wanted to have a topper customized to look like us, plus we had some cats added onto the topper since we have cats. I really did love the topper; however, working with this seller was extremely difficult.
The only reason that I am not giving her a lower grade is because I think the questionnaire that she has is really great, the final product was perfect (except for one minor glitch that I will discuss), and thank God, it did get here on time.

I ordered this product in the summer, and I was told that I would receive proofs at the beginning of October. When I didn’t receive them, I contacted her. She kept telling me I would receive them the following week, and we kept going back and forth with this. She said that her daughter had overbooked her. Anyway, it was like two weeks before the wedding, and I was in a panic. Finally, the cake topper arrived; however, the tail on one of the cats was not secure. I could tell that it was made in a rush and not allowed to dry properly. There are two other comments on her feedback list that are similar to my complaint. Aside from that, she has great feedback…however, I’d still be wary. For a $140 cake topper, I feel like way more effort should have been put into this whole operation.

Table Numbers, Our DOC, A+
As I said, I’m not naming our DOC in this review. However, she made our table numbers as well. They were exactly what we wanted—very simple, brown table numbers. I felt like we had a lot of extravagant elements going on, and this was the perfect contrast. I was very happy with them.

Leaf Place Cards A-
I don’t remember where I got our place cards from. Honestly, I liked them a lot, but I was hoping to find something different. I had a few different ideas in my head, but I never really found what I was looking for in terms of place cards. One etsy seller had something that I was interested in, but the price was crazy for what it was.

It didn’t even really matter though, as our hall does true place cards and not reception cards. People are told their table number when they walk in, so it as not as though everyone was going to be gawking at the place cards the entire night anyway. I liked how The WoodWinds handled seating. I feel it would have been a madhouse with 250 people rushing to see where they were seated!

Make a Wish, Take a Wish Guestbook, Etsy seller Bridedesign, A+
I didn’t want to go with a traditional guestbook, but I was really getting confused as to what to do. Then I came across this great idea by Bridedesign. Each guest got to “Make a wish and take a wish.” There was one basket with blank strips of paper, where someone wrote down a wish and we got to take that basket home with us and all of their messages. The other basket had preprinted messages in it. They were Bible verses, Irish blessings, and so forth. Each guest got to take one of those wishes home with him or her.

A decent amount of people participated, but we still had enough “Take a wishes” leftover, so that we can read some of the sayings that our guests got.

DOJ, Various, A+
I wanted extremely simple DOJ, as my gown and my veil were both rather elaborate. I honestly do not even remember where I ordered my earrings from. They were simple studs, and I thought they were great. My bracelet was my “something borrowed.” My Dad has a charm that says “Daddy’s Little Girl” so I had that put onto a bracelet by Matthew James Jewelers (A+ for them!). They also resized my Nan’s engagement and wedding bands. I was very happy to wear that charm on my wedding day.

Wedding Bands, My Nan’s and Overstock A+
What was important to DH and myself was the symbolism of the wedding bands. Not that DH “didn’t care” what his looked like, but he didn’t need it to be flashy, pricey, etc. What was important to him was that our rings were going to be blessed and then we were going to exchange them as a sign of our love. Therefore, he ordered a very plain and simple ring on Overstock. It’s completely his style, and we had no problems.

I would have done the same thing, except for the fact that I have inherited my Nan’s wedding ring. I too, extremely value the fact that this was the ring that was blessed and that DH placed on my hand as a sign of his love. It is also very important to me that I am able to wear my Nan’s wedding band every day of my life. To us, this had more symbolic meaning than purchasing flashy rings for one another.

Veil, Etsy seller Terihuang A+
I was adamantly opposed to wearing a veil, due to some of its anti-feminist connotations. However, I started to debate it, and some of the girls on the board made really good points. They said that no one is going to think that I am wearing a veil because of some ancient tradition, and they said that I could always choose to not wear it the day of. I am SO happy that I decided to get a veil, because I absolutely loved it. I really didn’t want to take it off, but it at 120 inches long, it was a bit of a hazard to be walking around with during the reception! When I started planning my wedding, I was kind of in an “anti” everything phase. I’m glad that I got over it!

Once I decided to get a veil, I went all out and got a single layer cathedral length veil with Swarovski crystals. I had a great experience with this seller. I received the veil right away and it was just perfect. I’m pretty sure my Mom teared up when I tried it on for her.

Cocktail Napkins, The Knot, A+
I thought that the napkins that I got were absolutely precious. They had two little birds on them, and they said “Fall in Love.” We got a mix of colors. 200 were white and blue, 200 were chocolate brown and white, and 200 were blue and chocolate brown. We have a bunch leftover, so I’m excited to use them for a gathering.

Cardbox, My Brother, A+
My Dad came up with the idea of using a dollhouse for a cardbox, and I absolutely loved the idea. My parents bought the supplies at a dollhouse store in Garden City (the name is escaping me right now!) and then my brother put it together. It really took a lot of work on his part, and it came out so beautifully. It was monster sized, so we had some problems getting it up to Connecticut, but one of the groomsman and one of the bridesmaids were able to bring it up there.

Hospitality Station, Food from Grocery Store, Set Up at Days Inn, A+
I’m giving this an A+ because I heard that everyone really appreciated it. However, I was only at it for about five seconds. When we switched the ceremony site, we were presented with a four hour gap between the end of the ceremony and the beginning of the reception. Most people had hotel rooms and many people were going to change in between; however, my parents really thought that we should have something in between. At first I didn’t care, but I am glad that I eventually agreed.

The Days Inn set up for us, and my parents supplied the food. The room was open immediately after the Church until right up until the reception start time. My Dad bought cheese, crackers, some other snacks, beer, soda, and water, and my Mom decorated the room with some fall themed centerpieces. We heard that the food ran out pretty quickly; however, I don’t really think that is a huge problem seeing as people were presented with a huge cocktail hour by 7PM!

My friends who handed out the bubbles also handed out little cards that told people where to go for this set up.

After Party, Days Inn, A+
The hotel allowed us to have free reign of the meeting room for the entirety of the weekend. Yes, our wedding ended at 1AM, but we still had to have an after party. It was very informal, and by the time we got back to the hotel around 2AM, most people were heading off to bed. However, I’d say about 20 of us stayed up and partied. There were some pastries and cakes floating around, but mostly the drinks were flowing. It went on until around 4:30AM.

Morning After Brunch, Food by Luigi’s Italian Pastries A+, Location at Days Inn A+
The staff at the Days Inn was extremely helpful during the morning. We were trying to figure out how to transport the groom’s cake back to New York (there was no box or anything!) and they wrapped it up very nicely for us.

All of the guests were very happy to wake up to a nice breakfast. My Mom ordered pastries from the bakery that we used for the cake, and the hotel provided us with some items from the continental breakfast that they offer. It was a great way to say goodbye to everyone. We didn’t have to end it the night of the wedding, and we were able to get a little more time with the group. Most of the people there were extremely hungover and/or tired, but everyone was making jokes about how much of a great party it was the night before for all of us to look like that then.

The WoodWinds A+
DH & I looked at 16 reception halls in total. None of the first 15 were what we wanted. We saw some beautiful places, but they just weren’t “us.” With all of my binders, folders, papers, etc. I never thought that I would book a reception hall on the spot. However, we went on a tour of The WoodWinds, and when we were done, we left. But we immediately turned right back around and went in and booked! It was originally my Dad’s suggestion that we look off of Long Island, and I am SO glad that he suggested that!

It was everything that we wanted. The building and room itself were not extremely “elaborate.” It was homey, but gorgeous. The décor reminded me of a mansion more so than a catering hall. I loved that the ballroom had a fireplace, and that the cocktail hour room had couches. Furthermore, they had outdoor heaters so that people could go outside. I honestly do not even remember if people wound up going outside that night, aside from going out to have a cigarette. However, I loved that the option was there.

Everything was just perfect. Scott, our Matre’D, was by our side the whole night catering to our every need. I feel like it is rare for guests to comment on how excellent a Matre’D is, but that was not the case at our wedding! We had guests saying how great Scott was, and how he really seemed to be everywhere at once!
The food was absolutely superb. Everyone was saying how it was great, fantastic, and exquisite. People said they had never had food like that before at a wedding, and that it was the best wedding they had ever been to. The raves about the food made us extremely happy, because food was a massively important factor when we were picking a place to have our reception. We were upstairs in the bridal suite, so we did not get all of the cocktail hour food. However, whatever we requested, they brought us plus more. They even brought up a pitcher of Captain and coke for the guys, since that is DH’s favorite drink! It was wonderful having some private time with just the bridal party and immediate family to unwind before we headed downstairs.

I don’t even really remember what was at the cocktail hour, but I do know that The WoodWinds is fabulous with their pass around service. They are constantly coming to you and serving more food. You do not only get little tiny bit of everything. I heard that the hot dishes and cold displays were excellent as well. Our meal started off with New England clam chowder, which everyone raved about. The next course was melon and prosciutto di parma, which I thought was fantastic. For dinner, there was a choice of eggplant parmigana, prime rib, swordfish dijonaise, and chicken piccata. I tried all of them except for the chicken piccata, and they were all out of this world. Everyone commented on how great it was.

The Venetian hour was a big hit, as was the chocolate fountain. They kind of put the chocolate fountain in a corner…I’m not really sure why, but it does seem that people got to enjoy it. One of the best decisions that we made was t
