THE BEST DAY EVER!! My 06-08-08 Review Featuring Leonards of Great Neck, Pedestals, Camelot Limos, Finer Touch Entertainment, The Pros, Bleu Diamond Events, and many more!!!
As almost all reviews start out this way but my wedding day was THE BEST DAY EVER!! The day was warm (very warm), everyone looked great, I felt great, and it was the 5th anniversary of my and DHs relationship together, there couldn't be a better day to get married. However the road was looooong and stressful at times. It took a lot of time, patience, and funds for this 8 hour event. So I'm going to take you all on a brief back track for the past year so we all can know the stuggle. LOL. It was all so we can get here:
It all started...LOL... No, I won't do that to you all! Our story begins on May 25, 2007. My FH just finished a cruise with the Navy on the USS Eisenhower. During the time he was gone I made the decision to move to Virginia Beach where he was stationed and I purchased a home for us. Once we got to the master bedroom he went to look around and I stayed in my favorite part (the closet ), when I walked back into the master bedroom he was on his knee! He motioned for me to come to him which I did and he gave this beautiful speech and he opened this box with the ring I've been looking at for the longest time!!
So begins the planning to make our special day exactly what we want it to be. The easiest thing to pick was the date. I either wanted to get married on my bday (May 5) or our anniversary (June 8) of the following year. Since my bday was on a Thursday and our anniversary was on a Sunday we went with that one and it was the best decision we made!!
The first vendor I booked was The Pro's for photography, videography, and DJ. I was sooo new to wedding planning. I went to a wine and cheese, listened to the presentation, and mingled with all the professionals. I found one David Burton (photographer) I saw his work and loved the story he told with his photos. Along with him was Gohar the videographer who was sweet and I was told he worked very well with David. At the contract signing I was told that I would get a bigger discount if I booked a third service which would be DJ. None of the DJ's there were what I was looking for but a rep recommended a professional. I signed off on all three services not looking anywhere else.
By July, I officiall moved to VA Bch and was recieving a little pressure by my FH and grandmother to get married sooner. FH wanted to do it so he can get spousal allowance from the Navy to live off base and my grandmother who is old fashioned, didn't think it was right to live with a man who wasn't your husband. So on Friday, August 31, 2007 we decided to go to the Justice of the Peace and made it official. The deciding factors were 1. I loved this man and we were getting married anyway 2. The military has the best healthcare in the world and it would be foolish for me to live in a new state with no family and no health insurance or benefits of any kind! & 3. Both my FH and grandmother promised that we can have the wedding I wanted in June of '08. All parties were satisfied and we made it happen!
Before we moved I knew we would have to find a location for the wedding. We knew we wanted to have everything in 1 location. Our search led us to a mess of places. From locations we would NEVER walk back into to the most beautful of grounds that were just beyond our means. The place we chose was Leonards of Great Neck because the place is beautiful inside and out and the price was excellent. Our BM Ernest seemed very attentive to what we wanted and he explained everything, even spoke of giving us a free ice sculpture which excited FH. After we signed the contract I was put on to this site (the best webpage EVERRR) and I started to read some reviews about Leonards and I even googled some reviews. Brides were torn with how they felt their day went; some had a wonderful time and others hated it. One review was made by a groom who said it was the worst day! He mentioned the food was late and cold, the Matire D was rude and never around, amoung other things. That scared me so much so that on a visit home during the winter holidays I drove to Leonards to discuss the review and my concerns. I met with a BM whom I don't remember his name but he pulled my file and assured me that my day will go well and none of the issues discussed will go on. I left not really convinced but no one can predict what would happen about 6 months from that day.
About the end of the year I recieved a letter from the Pro's stating that the DJ whom I never met was unable to do the wedding and another professional whom I never met has been assigned to my day. I was becoming fed up with this DJ situation so I called my contact person Pamela Deputy and explained that I would like to cancel the DJ service.
After trying to secure all my vendors during December, losing the DJ was a major set back. I had a week to get a florist, Limo, and now a DJ before I had to get back to VA. I went to Pedestals and met with Vito who is the best person! I loved his personality, it didn't take much for him to understand my vision and he came up with everything I wanted at a price I could live with. So of course I went with Vito at Pedestals another vendor I booked without seeing anyother, only this time I never regretted it for a second!
On to Limos... we went to so many limo companies in Long Island. And I love cars I think more that DH so this was my favorite part behind getting my dress. Some places were ridiculously priced, to the point where I could have gotten me a new car for a price equivilent to a 3 hour ride in their car. Then the heavens opened up and we walked into Camelot limo's. The first thing we did was see the fleet. Every car was clean even on an off day. I knew we wanted two strech limos and an antique or Bently to take us to the hotel afterwards. I decided to go with a 10 passenger stretch but DH wanted a jeep of some kind. He liked the Escalade but then he was introduced to the Super Hummer, he loved it. Then we sat with Joe. WE LOOOOOVVVEEEE JOE!!! He talked price with us and for 3 hours the Hummer was a little out of the budget so DH went with the Escalade.
Then I turned my attention to getting a DJ. About 2 days before I had to go my best friend walked in a bridal fashion show in Jersey. She called me on break to tell me about the DJ company who had the crowd jumping with the music. I told her to get his info and she did. Enter Finer Touch Entertainment. I looked on their website and I knew I had to have them! And once I met with Harold I was positive until he passed me that price sheet. I told him what I wanted and he worked the price to where we were both happy. And with that, I had all my major vendors in place.
In December I learned the biggest lesson of all: Once you make up your mind stick with it. People will try to tun your wedding into their wedding and make you feel like your decisions are all wrong. My cousin did this to me, she critized the date, the day of the week it fell on, the colors we chose, the location, she just wouldn't stop talking. At the end it took a nice old fashioned curse out and tellin her where to go and how to get there to make her understand. So to all you soon2b brides please PLEASE don't let people disrupt your vision especially if their 'words of wisdom' are uninvited.
Since I had my main vendors in place I decided to take some time off from wedding planning. I foused on the fact that I was a newly wed and I tried to focus on work. In April I found out that my DH and I were expecting a child! Yes I got knocked up what I thought was 3 months before the wedding. After going to the doctor I found out that I was 8 weeks into pregnancy and I would be 5 months when I got married. The first thing I thought about was my dress, was it going to fit? Will it look right? Then came other questions: Should we have the wedding or save the money for the baby? Then I started looking to see how much it would cost NOT to have the wedding. After tallying up all the cancellation costs I decided it would cost almost the same to have the wedding then not to so we were going to get dressed up and have a great time.
So on to the part you've all been waiting for.....
THE REVIEW!!!
Our Wedding Day has finally arrived. Smack in the middle of heat wave. A high of 100 degrees!!!! And my DH can not take the heat...the sweat starts pouring down his face. And even though the ceremony was indoors he and some of the guests were still overheated.
So for weather I rate that an A-
I checked the weather everyday for the week of the wedding. It started out at 75 and sunny, then 80 and sunny , 82 and rain, 84 and sunny, then 94, and finally 96! OMG I can't take that heat!!! Since the ceremony started at 5:30 it wasn't as hot when I came down to the limo.
Prep for the day: A+
The day started off with me fixing the seating chart at the absolute last minute. People were calling stating that they couldn't come but luckily I had reserves on my B and C lists that could fill their spots. My MOH wrote out the place cards almost until the last hour.
Makeup: Lamar Wright
LAMAR IS FABULOUS!!! He is a manager at the Mac Pro store and personal friend of my MOH and I. He did the wedding party and my faces for a VERY reasonable price. Although he was late he had us looking great. He stayed the whole day with me touching me and my girls up at each important moment.
Hair: My personal hairdresser Alana. A+++++
She's been doing my hair since I was 14 so of course she would be the one to do my hair on my special day.
Jewelry: Swavorski A+++++
I bought my earrings, one of my bridesmaids and my MOH's jewelry from this store. Although I had 3 BMs and 2JBMs I felt that those two people were the only ones involved in all aspects of the wedding. To show my appreciation I spent a little extra funds on them.
Dress A++++
Tiffany by Maya Norfolk, VA
I wanted to get my dress from VA because I could not keep travelling back and forth for fittings. I walked into this store and tried on 5 dresses. When I put that dress on I knew it was the 1. I loved everything about it. And it fit my budget! The sales people were great and I couldn't ask for more in a store.
Shoes A++++++ Benjamin Adams London.
I saw these shoes in an issue of Bride magazine and I HAD to have them. They were $250 in Brittish pounds and since their money is double of ours I won't even speak of how much these shoes cost straight from the source and having them shipped from London. But they are fabolous!!
I also ordered some custom boyshorts that said Mrs C-well in rhinestones from customglamgirl.com I give them an A++++ as well. I just didn't feel comfortable having the photographer taking a photo of my behind.
The Pros A+++++ (Photography & Videography)
David was great. Very attentive and took every photo imaginable. I couldn't ask for more. Before the day I asked for him to be able to do my and Dh's prep photos and the pros' agreed but he said it wouldn't be possible and I would have to hire an assistant. The Pros charged $600 for a second person, and two days before the wedding that price didn't work for me. David contacted me and he had a photographer that he worked with. She happened to be available and she would cost $300 for the entire day. Her name is Dawn and she was wonderful. She went to the DH's home and took the prep photos and all the photos of his party. She was his personal photographer and as the day progressed she took her own set of photos. We have almost 700 pictures between the two of them. Talk about memories. I loved their work and I would recommend David again! The same goes for Gohar. He was prompt and efficient. I can't really comment too much because I have yet to see the video.
Camelot Limo's A++++++++++++++
I can't even typle enough pluses for this vendor. Joe was so patient with me and my thousand changes. At first I wanted to take photos before the ceremony. Then I wanted to take photos during the cocktail hour but I didn't want to miss so much of my reception or even my cocktail hour. Then I decided to stay at Leonards for the entire day. Through it all Joe was so patient! Since I paid for 3 hours on the cars and wouldn't be needing that time Joe upgraded all of my cars. I went from the 10 passenger to the Escalade DH once had. DH went from the Escalde to the Supper Hummer he wanted before. And he threw what was supposed to be a car to take us from our hotel to home but when this car pulled up it was a nice black 6-10 passenger limo!! In addition we ordered the 1947 Caddy and my grandmother got a 6 passenger car for her ALONE! Joe had us looking very fly and important on our big day! I appreciate him and his service so very much. Our drivers were great, I think my driver was a little upset that he had to wait because he seemed a little irritated but... I was too hype to care. The driver of the Caddy is one of the managers there and he was great, very kind and patient. I want to say his name is Steve but don't quote me on that. I didn't meet the driver of the Hummer but DH said he was cool too. All in all Camelot made our day and I would recommend them to ANY and EVERYONE!!
Pedestals... A++++++
Like I said before, I love Vito. Even during a heat wave my flowers looked great. There was a wedding on the 7th at Leonards and their flowers died before the bride walked down the aisle due to the heat, she didn't use Pedestals but I am so glad I did. My centerpieces were what I wanted. Quality and customer satisfaction!!! I would also recommend Pedestals to everyone.
BM dresses: David's Bridal C
I used David's Bridal because of convenience. DH's favorite color is royal blue so I wanted to do something for him and that became the main color scheme of the wedding. I called it : Saphire (sounds better than Royal Blue), Platinum, and Diamond Elegance. Davids Bridal had the color Blue Velvet which was the closest to Royal Blue and I liked the color. Because the girls all have different shapes it was a little difficult to find a dress that fit them all well. We settled on a gown and each girl ordered them seperately. It took some of them so long to get the dag on dreess that I had to implement a cut off for dresses and if they missed the date they couldn't be in the wedding. That worked like a charm. They all ordered by the last possible day which was more than enough time to have the dresses delivered and alterations to be done if needed.
The JBM's also found cute dresses in Blue Velvet but after that conversation in Decemeber about the colors being too dark for a summer/spring wedding and my BMs and GM's were too dark for that color (yes some STUPID things were said). I compromised and had the younger girls get silver and blue dresses instead of all blue. Another horrible decision because hardly NO ONE made silver dresses for children. Finally we found a small shop in Brooklyn that special ordered dresses. Their dress is from Alferd Angelo (spelling) and we customized the colors.
Also at Davids Bridal we found our flower girl dress. My niece was my flower girl at 5 years old. She is sooo slim and normally wears a size 5 or 6. Her mother thought she would all of a sudden grow like a giant man and she would need a size 8. Against my telling her to get a 6 she insisted on the 8. When the 8 came it was waaaaaay too large. I waited until April to see if she gained this massive weight her mother waited for and guess what...... the dress was BIGGER THAN BEFORE! It's like she lost weight. Now I'm stuck with a dress in a size 8 because DB doesn't do refunds and I had to order a size 6 (both of which I paid for). I couldn't waste a dress so I had to find another flower girl at the last minute to fit the size 8 dress. Fortunately DH's cousin fit the dress perfectly.
The reason DB gets a C is because we used to Westbury location and those women are the most rude, unattentive people you could ever deal with. The cashiers are sooo slow. When you call the store you're on hold so long that you could have gotten in your car and drove there to ask your question. On top of that, when you order your dress they harass you for your phone number so they can call you and tell you when the dresses are in. I ordered 5 dresses from that store...all with different delivery dates. I recieved 1 phone call. One of my dresses sat in the store for a month because it came early and no one called to let me know. When I asked everyone from the store clerk to the manager of the store why haven't I receieved phone calls about the dresses I was told that there is mark next to each dress that indicates that I was called. I refused to argue. I was just pleased that the dresses finally came in one piece and they looked good.
On to the men.... Mens Warehouse A++
Of course we had to use Mens Warehouse due to the same convenience. It was quick, painless, easy, and efficient. The men ordered the suit, shirt, shoes, tie, vest, etc. The package. The suits were great and they let me mix and match tie and vest colors so the guys wore blue velvet ties and platinum vests. The looked very handsome on the day!
His dad also got his suit from MW and he looked very handsome also.
So after all of that we finally get to Leonards...
I give Leonards a pre wedding grade of B but a day of grade of A+++.
Before the wedding I couldn't really get answers. I wrote on the boards about my issues with the BM so I won't write them again. But on the day, I couldn't be happier. The bridal attendant (I'm horrible with names but I know it started with an S) was great! She was by my side from the time I opened the door to the time I got in the caddy to go to the hotel. She would have walked down the aisle with me if she could lolol. She was great though. The Matire D (I really should have written these names down) was great also. He had all the answers to my questions and he never left me wondering what was going on.
The ceremony was supposed to start at 5:30 but we were running late and it didn't start until 6 or 6:15. I was so annoyed because I really wanted to be there on time but oh well.... what could I have done? By the time the reception started the managers came over and asked if we were having a good time, if everything was the way we wanted, and to tell us that since our event started late they would add 20 or 30 minutes to the party.
The food was delicious and the guests really loved the open bar. We even had a signature drink which was an Electric Blue Lemonade. I couldn't taste it because of the baby but I sure watched people enjoying those drinks one after the other after the other!
And one more thing, THE CAKE. I didn't want to spend the extra money on a cake so I went with a free one the venue offered. You could either choose #12 or #13 for free. I think I chose 13. The picture made both cakes look terrible but I didn't care because I was out of funds. Well on the day, the cake looked great and it tasted even better. Here it is!
DJ: Finer Touch Entertainment A+++
I said it before and I'll say it again I love Harold. I'm sure I got on his nerve too with my changes but he was very patient with me. During all my time with him my friend and I got into his personal business a little but that's just because he's quiet and I always mess with the quiet ones. But Harold was really cool. I got everything I wanted, and even though I didn't get to join in on the party as much as I would have wanted I heard from my guests that they loved the music and that he and his team had them dancing.
(I don't know what i'm doing in this pic but I guess I was havin a good ol time)
DOC: Bleu Diamond Events C+
Although I had some issues in the very beginning with Gina at Bleu Diamond I decided around 2 weeks before the wedding to utilize her services. I wanted a coordinator because I wanted control of the guest list, have people sign the guest book correctly, and make sure everything is set up properly for both the ceremony and reception. Gina knows Leonards inside out and after deep thought I signed a contract to work with her. Everything started out great. She knows the vendors and things went smoothly. My issue came at tthe end of the night. I gave Gina a bunch of tip envelopes for her to distribute to the DJ, Photographer, and the rest of the vendors as well as her tip and her assistant Jessica's tip.
Now..because I loved Camelot so much I recommended to my cousin that she should use them if she was looking for a car to drive her that day. Camelot assigned one driver to her for the day I guess. When Gina was leaving the venue (and I didn't even know she was leaving) that limo driver tells her that he didn't get tipped. Gina then takes it upon herself to give this driver $100 tip that was meant for the photographer. That upset me deeply because she had my contracts and familiarized herself with my people. She knows that vehicle was no where on my contract so why am I responsible for his tip when m cousin is standing right there? And why would she tip him out of the photographer's money? If she was so concerned with the driver getting tipped she should have tipped him out of her own tip in my opinion. I felt that situation was poorly handled and liberties were taken with my cash after money was already seperated for specific people. That irritated me to no end.
On top of that, I ordered my guest book from the guestbookstore.com (A++++ for the book by the way). This book is not a regular guest book, it has various questions and each person is supposed to answer both front and back. The book also came with instructions on how it should be displayed, etc. which I explained to Leonards ppl and Gina because I wanted it filled out correctly (these are my memories here). The guest book was not displayed how it should have been, people had no idea what to do, 1 person would fill out the first side and another would fill out the back. I was so upset going through the book afterwards. I felt like it was just a waste!
On a happy note, Jessica was cool. She's getting married next year so all the best to her!
Now on to my ebay sellers who did me so well!
Ring Bearer Pillow: SueKate A+++
She had some pillows on auction and I contacted her two weeks before the ceremony and asked if she could make a pillow with my colors. She agreed and she was very sweet.
Personalized Boxers: Seller embroiderpetsbikers A+++
I love these boxers. The color royal matched my colors exactly. DH couldn't wear them on the day because the boxers were so thick and he would just die if he put them under his pants in that heat wave. He wears them as pajamas though because they are sooo large.
Edible Favors: Seller emsedibleimages A+++
This seller also worked with me. I had my monogram made with the font Helinda Rook and since most people don't have it, when they recieved the attachment it was blocked letters. This seller basically had to do a whole new monogram for me so it could work. I loved the end result though and so did my guests.
Cake Topper: Seller jbrazzi A++++
This seller whom I also contacted two weeks before the wedding happened to have the letter I needed in the font I wanted in stock. The topper was sent to me very efficiently and it looked great on the cake. Even though you can't see it in the photo due to the flowers, its a C
Card box: Seller Forthemodernbride A+++
I love the card box. They are so accommodating and made sure I was 100% satisfied. If you are looking for something other than a traditional money bag, try this. No one could get to the cards already in the box and everything stayed in so nicely.
And lastly for Ebay, my soon2be hoodie
Seller: designonyou A+
I wanted a hoodie just to have one. I couldn't even wear it prior to the wedding because it was so hot, but I wear it now. Mine says Mrs. Carswell Est 6-8-08 in royal blue writing. I love it.
Our rings: Zales A+++++++ Lynnhaven Mall, VA
Since DH bought the first round of rings, I bought the second round. He complained about his first ring so badly. He said it looked horrible and that I must have gotten it from the quarter machine.
He wanted another one so badly. I always had in mind to get him one but I would never let him know. I wanted him to be surrprised. I wanted to do something different and he said he wanted green diamonds. Obviously he didn't know who he was speaking with LMAO... green diamonds...who does he think I am? But I went to Zales and found a ring I loved. A 5 stone diamond band. I wanted to pop two diamonds out and replace them with emeralds (my birthstone and the closest he would get to green diamonds). I also ordered myself an eternity band with two of the stones popped out and replaced with Garnets (his birthstone). During the ring exchange was the first time he saw his ring and this was his reaction:
My second favor was donation cards from Brides Against Breast Cancer. My mom passed from breast cancer when I was 5 and I wanted to honor her in some way. I felt that a donation to the breast cancer org was the way to go. Guests were touched and those who knew her along with myself took a momment to remember her silently. This also explains the random touches of pink in the bouquets, centerpieces and our names in pink of the Invites since pink is the breast cancer signature color.
Lastly... My DIY's.
This wedding was a DIY lolol and I give myself so many A Plus's that I can't even type them. In addition I DIY'd my invites thanks to cardsandpockets.com. (A++++). I loved them so much I went back and ordered more paper for my baby shower invites.
I also did my menus'
I think that's all for the review. I loved everything from beginning to end despite of a few bumps in the road. I get complements on the wedding daily and when I say mu guests loved it....they LOVED it! The venue, the food, and the music sealed the deal for them. Their favorite part was the ceremony. They loved our vows, because we are very light hearted and laid back we didn't want a stuffy serious ceremony, our vows were full of jokes and sarcasm but the overall idea of love was all over!
If I could share one piece of advice with all of you soon to be brides it would be to time line your reception. I felt like the day went from 4pm to 11pm in a matter of 30 minutes. I didn't get to mingle as much as I would have liked and I could change anything, that is the only thing I would change.
My day was the Best Ever to me and DH. I'm glad I got to share it with the ones I love and I'm happy to share it with each of you who have helped me so much! The biggest rave goes to LIW because you girls are so serious about events and weddings. I learned so much and used a ton of info from this site. I booked about 95% of my vendors based on your reviews and that's why I felt the need to do this review (although it took me over 5 hours)! I hope you enjoyed my review. FM me with any questions you may have about any of my vendors or sellers. I appreciate all feedback. Here are some more photos from the day!
And incase you were wondering, a week after the wedding I had an ultrasound and we are having a little girl! She's coming November 3rd and we can't wait! Here's a pic from her first photo shoot! lol.
Take care guys!!! I hoped this helped!!
