MRSSOTO'S Wedding Review! 4/18/10 Jericho Terrace, Francesca- Dazzling Affairs, Dan Wagner, Golden Moments, Flower Michele, Pedala sisters, High Energy Entertainment, Camelot & more!!!!
Now, this review is crazy long. I’m not offended if you don’t read through (not that I would know
) but I hope that it serves as a help for all future brides out there. If you do read it through, GOD BLESS and thanks! LOLLIW- come on, that's an easy one!!
LIW was priceless to me throughout our engagement. Wow- it has been said a billion times but thank you so much Ron, Kim and Liz and the whole LIW staff for creating this site and keeping it up and running. I just can’t imagine planning a wedding without the girls and ideas I got from LIW. It was a lifesaver. And the friendships that were made through this site are just amazing. I feel so blessed to be a part of you girls! Thank you everyone for helping me to plan the best day of my life!

Weather- A++
It was saying around a 30% chance of rain for our wedding day. I was disappointed but didn’t get too worked up over it as I knew I would still have a fantastic day regardless and either way, I wouldn’t be able to do anything to change it. Well, anyway, I got up and it was so beautiful out! Not a dark cloud or any sign of rain all day! The temperature was in the high 50s, maybe low 60s but that’s what I expected for April. Honestly, I was not cold once the whole day. The girls were a little unfortunately but I guess with all the material under the dress and all the adrenaline, I didn’t feel a thing. Perfection!
Makeup and Hair
Maureen and Claudia Pedala / A++ (Both)
Maureen Pedala- Makeup
Claudia Pedala- Hair
First let me say that hair and makeup were a huge deal for me; I was prepared to drop some good money on both if need be to get the very best out there. My belief was that the one of the most important things for the day of was to feel you’re very best that you can or else all the other work wasn’t worth it. When I would look at some trials on LIW, I would see some that were OK but still in my opinion were not perfect and others that I really liked, the reviews of the customer service given by the makeup/hair artist were very mixed. There were 1 or 2 people however that I called but they were already booked. Then I found Maureen and Claudia Pedala- they are sisters who often work together for the weddings/events they do on the weekends. They had great experience having done numerous celebrities. Currently they both work on two different morning news sets doing the makeup and hair for the morning news anchors. I knew that if they did that for tv, they would have to be great! I went for a trial and they both nailed it on the first try! They were just perfect as what they did and were so sweet. I booked on the spot. I also paid for hair and makeup as the gift for my bridesmaids.
The day of, they showed up very early (the first vendors). They had so much stuff with them and even had music so we could all relax and have some fun while getting ready. Some girls had a few ideas on what they wanted and others just let them do their thing. Everyone looked gorgeous when they were finished!!! Some girls wanted a more natural look; others were okay with having more makeup. Maureen did airbrush on everyone. It lasted all day. Claudia is just amazing with hair. My MOH has pretty short hair- it was crazy, she did an updo on her and one would never tell she had short hair. Pics below. Even after two trials, I still didn’t know what I wanted and finally decided that I would wait till the day of. That day, I said to her that I still wasn’t sure if I wanted all up or down. She was totally fine with that and said we could try down first and put it up if I want- not a problem. She did a half up/half down style (I said I didn’t want something seen before…I wanted something a little different and slightly old school Hollywood look because of the look of my dress). She NAILED it. I left it in the down style. It lasted all night- at the very end, my curls let out a bit but I also had been playing with them toward the end and was sweating from dancing but I was really happy with my hair. Maureen did airbrush on me as well and I never got the least bit shiny. My eye makeup stayed 100% perfect all day- it was dramatic like I wanted and perfect. My lipstick of course came off but that’s expected and she gave me the color and liner to keep with me all day too which I didn’t expect. I felt like a true princess that day thanks to these ladies. I know that’s such a cliché but what can I say, I did. I love both of them and have such good memories of them with us hanging out the morning of. I plan to use both in the future!
Bridal Shop and Dress
Bridal Suite of Centereach/ Mori Lee
Bridal Suite of Centereach
My Dress!!!
Purchasing / A
My whole dress process got a bit stressful in the last 3 months of wedding planning. I decided to change dresses and I couldn’t find anything I loved that would come in on time. I basically had to get a sample and it’s hard when you’re not a size 2 (well dress size 8 fml as we all know). So after some sleepless nights and driving my liw girls crazy crying and panicking, I found a brand new sample of a dress that I LOVED in my size at the Bridal Suite of Centereach. The ladies who helped me that night were wonderful and spent 3 hours with me trying on about 50 dresses. I was so thankful to them and so happy to have found a dress. From that point, things weren’t quite as good (not terrible or anything drastic but just stressful).
Alterations / B-
So when I purchased the gown, I wanted an “inner” corset put into the dress. This means that the current closure stays on the outside of the dress but a corset is also added to the inside of the dress right on the opposite side of the zipper/buttons, etc. I know this can be done because I had it on my prior dress. I wanted this because I loved how the buttons looked but I wanted the corset for the purpose of cinching your waist in more. Also, I was only three months away and was loosing some weight but not would go up and down. Anyway, point is, the corset which I paid to be added to the interior was supposed to be put in prior to my first fitting so they could actually fit the dress when I got there. Well I got there and the seamstress says, oh we can’t measure you today, the corset needs to be already in there. I was pissed…I was all excited for the fitting plus the time I took out to go there, etc. and now another week had to go by as it approaches my wedding. On that first day, I had the bra with me that I had purchased and she didn’t say a word about it. Okay, I come back now for the (2nd) 1st fitting and the buttons are all gone and the corset is left (not on the inside), just the corset, that’s all. I was so upset. I love the look of buttons and I told fought with them. They claimed that no one ever told me that the corset would be on the inside. Fine, it didn’t look bad at all but I had to get used to it since it’s not what I expected. THEN, the seamstress tells me “oops, I didn’t realize last week that this bra wont work with your dress, sorrrrry I still cant do the measurements for you until you have the correct bra because we need it to be perfect!” WONDERFUL! And she cant do the hem either she says because of course she wants to make sure the bodice fits correctly before she cuts from the hem. Great, so now I go and get a new bra. I go back and finally the first fitting happens. Then, I go back for the second fitting and to check everything and it fit pretty close to perfect except I still felt like the bodice was a tiny bit loose and I would be picking up the dress all night; she said its such a tiny bit that she would be taking it in that this is where the purpose of the corset comes in and it can just be tightened. What she said made sense at the time so I was satisfied. The day of the wedding, it kept falling a bit and was just annoying so I was a bit annoyed that she was just too lazy to fix it and convinced me otherwise. So that’s that for the alterations, it probably sounds worse than it was. I think she was totally competent as a seamstress and did good work but she was lazy and wouldn’t admit to a mistake so basically, don’t worry about the alterations themselves at Centereach Bridal, just be sure to stick to your guns and to make sure to have any specific alterations detailed in writing. (PS- I know they have more than one seamstress…this ones name was Caroline or Carolina I think)
Dress / A+
The dress was by Mori Lee, blu collection and I really and truly loved it so much! It was beautifully made, great quality, the silk taffeta felt so luxurious. It was perfect and I could cry looking at it now, knowing Ill never be a bride again able to wear it. Maybe one day Ill put it on and go to a bar with my girls. LMAO! I bought trimming that matched a section of the beading on the belt of the dress and also would matching the edging on my veil and had the seamstress add it on the dress on the neckline to give just slightly more sprakle.
Reception Hall:
Jericho Terrace / A
Jericho Terrace
Jericho Terrace. They were great and I would have a wedding there a million times over. JT definitely holds a special place in my heart since I fell in love from the beginning and every time I would visit, it was like I just couldn’t wait to get married there; it was so beautiful and Mike Closs, my banquet manager became like friend to dh and I. We really loved him so much and will miss seeing him! From the time we stepped into JT, we were treated like family; everyone always said hi and welcome and when I brought a bm once, they gladly gave her a tour with me. Whenever I had a question, I would call Mike and he answered anything I needed. The final menu meeting was with Linda. DH and I must have spent over an hour and a half with her. She was so fun and down to earth. They were pretty lenient on most things; one or two things she had to be approved and it was no problem. JT has a very good selection of international foods; we got a few Spanish dishes for cocktail hour since DH’s older relatives are still very traditional in what they eat (Puerto Rican). The final meeting was with Jose and went great as well. Our guests keep telling us how great the food was and how MUCH there was. I have to mention the steak entrée; people were saying it was huge and thick and this is from big guys…not my little Grandma (who also said it btw lol). People said the place was really beautiful and they were very impressed with the service/wait staff; some people said they never got up for a drink. The waiter kept refilling their glass with their previous drink/cocktail. The cake was so delicious (by Dortoni’s- the bakery JT uses for all their cakes which are included in the pp, price) but the outside didn’t look good to me (ill get to that later).
I wish I could give Jericho Terrace an A with a million plus signs but there were just a few things that bothered me that I have to mention. I didn’t realize that day, until now that I have my pictures back but the front area didn’t have anything planted to the right or left of the water streaming down from the balcony outside. Its all dirt for like 2 feet on either side of the water and it really shows in my pictures so much so that its hard for me to find a picture that I like that shows any part of the water because inevitably, it shows the open areas of dirt too. That was just disappointing. At the cocktail hour, I found out from my mom after the wedding that someone told her one of the dishes was cold and when she tasted it, it was still ice cold. She went up and told the person standing behind that chafing dish and asked for them to take it back in to heat up and he just said, once we take it out, the fires underneath have to heat it. I was pretty upset to hear that and I’m scared to know if any other food had the same situation. Our matre’d Jose was very nice and ran the wedding well but there was once or twice I couldn’t find him. It wasn’t a huge deal but DH and I wanted the lights dim the whole time rather than going on and off for eating and dancing. At one point for about 10 minutes the lights weren’t dimmed for dancing and I know I probably sound like a bridezilla but people including us were just not “feeling” the mood dancing with the bright lights on. Anyway, I found him and all was solved, really not worth mentioning but I feel like I would want these little details reading a review so I’m trying to include everything I can think of.
Overall- you will not be disappointed with Jericho Terrace; it’s a wonderful and very special place!
Day of Coordinator:
Francesca from Dazzling Affairs and her assistant, Kimberly. / A+++++++++++++(BEST VENDOR OF OUR WEDDING DAY!)
Dazzling Affairs
If you can’t tell already, I don’t have enough kind words for Francesca. First let me say that I was pretty much against a DOC; especially if you’re on a tight budget. If you had the money, fine but I always said to myself it would be the last thing I would spend money on if I was trying to save and budget out my money. Well, let me say this, I was a million percent wrong. Actually, I believe the opposite to be true now. Budget a DOC into your wedding as one of the first things you do after all the major vendors are booked or even before they’re booked. My mom and grandma got me a DOC as a gift and thank God they did because my wedding day would not have been the same without Francesca. I’m not going to list all of the things she did for me because I tried that the other day and drove one of you poor girls insane with my 5 page fm, lol. SORRY. But seriously, I can not thank Francesca enough for making me stress free on the most important day of my life. There was not 3 seconds that she or her assistant weren’t there for me if I needed them to do anything at all. And for all the girls out there who think they can’t relinquish control…I’m that girl! But when you have someone as competent and professional as Francesca with you for the day and the weeks leading up to your wedding, you will start to feel comfortable knowing that there is actually someone out there who will take care of things for you just like you would and maybe even a little better. So, if you take anything away from this review, please know that if you are considering a DOC, Francesca is your woman and its well worth every penny plus more. This is the one vendor at the end of the night that you will be more than happy to tip! Lol
Here is a pic of Francesca helping me with my dress/slip and another one of her spraying a shot of listerine in my mouth when i needed some gum...i asked and she pulled this out of that magic belt of hers...i just love her!
Invites/Menus/Favor Tags:
Tessa, ******** Paperie / A
Invites
I’m really happy to write the review of this vendor because initially, I would have never thought that I would be able to work with Tessa because I assumed my budget would be way too small. Why did I think that? Well, because her invites are stunning and handmade number one and number two, many girls on LIW and in her portfolio get pocket-folds, more elaborate designs, styles, etc. so I didn’t think I could ever afford any of that. Invites was one place where I really didn’t want to spend a lot of money. I didn’t want a plain white card but was okay with getting something simple to save money. So I was looking on sites like Birchcraft and similar invite companies. The price would look great until I got to the end and it would still end up being pricey for something pretty plain and definitely not something I loved. So I took a chance and emailed Tessa. I explained that I didn’t want pocket-fold or anything like that, just a flat standard card but with a nice design with my colors and good quality paper, different from what I would be getting on those other sites. I gave her my budget and she worked within it. I was so happy and my end result was something customized and beautiful and amazing quality. I think I only spent about 100 bucks more going with Tessa than I would have with Birchcraft, etc. That was well worth it to me. I got so many compliments on the invites. Tessa was pretty good with answering emails and all questions for the most part. Maybe there was a few occasions where she didn’t answer but just email her again and shell get right back to you. I really liked that she sent a hard copy proof in the mail so you could see what you’re getting and make any corrections. This is a service you don’t get many places. The menus, favor tags and table numbers also came out awesome! Definitely contact Tessa if you’re looking for something customized and beautiful for your invites/stationary.
Limos:
Camelot / A+
Camelot Limos
Wow!!! I was so impressed with Camelot on the day of my wedding. Everything was perfect…not one thing at all that I worried about. I LOVED every single driver. Frankie who was so sweet and down to earth picked up the guys first (he’s Joe’s nephew or cousin by the way). He was there early and since they had time, two of the guys wanted to stop at the liquor store around the corner. He was more than happy to stop and waiting for the guys while they went in and got a bottle of Hennessey and wine lol. When Frankie was waiting for all the guys to get it, he was talking to DH and making sure he was all calm cool and collected. Then Frankie arrived to pick me and the girls up at the hotel. He was so sweet. When we got out of the limo at the church, my DOJ was running around because the minister had just gotten there late and Frankie was fixing the back of my gown and my veil…how freakin cute is that!!!!!!!! Anyway, while we were taking pictures in the back of the church, Francesca wanted the limos to come around so we didn’t have to walk all the back to get the limos. So both limos now (the one to pick up the BP and then the new one that had shown up to just pick us up) pulled all around back. We had Rich as the driver who just took DH and I to JT and he played “here comes the bride” when we were coming which I got SUPER excited about, lol…cuz I didn’t think it was gonna play and forgot all about it. At the end of the night, we had Kenny who drove the Cadillac SUV to come drive us home. Kenny was so cool. He was like a real Dad…lol, telling us about his daughter who was getting married this summer at Watermill. I told him to turn off the gps and I would be the gps. We had fun…I kept pretending I had like a gps voice, lmao, I’m so gay. Anyway, we got home and he helped us bring the stuff out of the car. Oh, I don’t know the name of the driver who picked up my mom and Grandma is the town car but they said he was very nice- helped them in and out and came very early and made them feel very comfortable. And how can I forget about Joe…the owner of Camelot. He is just awesome and really knows how to run a business professionally and still make it feel like its family owned which it is, obviously. Joe was always the nicest guy and tried to help us out with budget and throwing in things anyway he could. He was always available via email or phone. I really can’t speak more highly about Camelot Limos. You will not be disappointed with them!!
Florist:
Flower Michele / A-
Flower Michele
So, throughout planning, John became like a friend to me more than a vendor. When I first met with John, I had already met with a few competitors and other popular florists so I already know from meeting with Flower Michele that he was different and exactly what I wanted. John sat with me for an hour I think and went through everything step by step. When it came to the centerpieces, I wasn’t completely positive what I wanted yet but had a few ideas. John was so good at piecing together what I wanted and shaping my vision into something that could be a reality. He always was so genuinely excited about my wedding and what he did for a living. It really came through and made me that much more excited to be working with John. He runs the business himself and has his handprint on everything that comes out on the wedding day. He’s meticulous about the way the flowers are presented and it showed on the wedding day. On the wedding day, I was a little upset because I had gone over with John a few times where I would be with the girls. Still, the delivery people went to the wrong hotel (the original one) but in the end, they made it and I checked everything over once they came to make sure all was good. My bok was the most beautiful bok ever; I just LOVED IT! That was my favorite of all of the flowers. I just could not stop looking at it…so breathtaking. The girls boks looked awesome too as did the centerpieces. I also got lighting from Flower Michele. He offers the leds that change throughout the reception; unfortunately something out of Johns control happened the night before to his equipment and I couldn’t have those. We had the standard up-lighting which still came out nice; just not what I had really wanted but I know that things happen and it was just a fluke. One more thing that I have to say is that I wanted petals on all of the tables at the base of the cp and also on the cake table. I thought I was going to get mixed petal colors from the colors in the cps. Well, they were just yellow and some were looked very brown. The color wasn’t a huge deal for the tables since I did have a little yellow in the cps but on the cake table, the yellow was very out of placed and clashed with the cake. I understand that petals are going to brown but some were just too brown. Anyway, all in all, I would highly recommend Flower Michele! He’s a great guy and awesome florist to work with!
DJ
High Energy Entertainment (Ralph) / A
High Energy Entertainment
High Energy is a vendor on LIW, also not as spoken about as much as some others but in our opinion, just as good. We had a dj and mc and also a percussionist which I am so happy we got. The percussionist really added a live element and some great energy to the room and the dance floor. He was a bit quirky which was fun and he came out onto the dance floor. I tried my hand at playing a little, lol and so did one of the groomsmen; Great investment to add a lot to the reception. I would highly recommend The mc, Ralph (and the owner) did a great job at the announcements. The dj played what we requested; we danced as much as we could…just wish I could remember more songs that played but the day goes by so fast and so many other things are going on, it’s hard to concentrate on certain things. We had the basic light package which was included; I honestly can’t remember how it looked but everything was perfect with the dj for an extremely reasonable price. I don’t see why there would have ever been a need to pay double the price for the same thing. Could not be happier!
Photographer
Dan Wagner / A+
Dan Wagner
I have nothing but wonderful things to say about Dan. He is a vendor on LIW; maybe a little less known than some other photographers on here but certainly not for a lack of experience/talent, etc. DH and I had met with about 4 other photographers before Dan. Some had great work but were out of our budget, others didn’t impress us with their work, two, we just didn’t click with. When we met with Dan, everything fit. He worked within our budget, photography was awesome, liked the album choices and the layouts he showed us. He was so laid back and really fit with our personalities. We booked. Throughout the engagement, I would email Dan sometimes and he would get back to me immediately. On the day of the wedding, Dan was right on time and even brought an assistant for free. He was all over the place and got 1700 photos!!! Honestly, after the first few moments of Dan being with us, I didn’t even realize he was there (besides the formal shots of course). The whole ceremony, I didn’t see him taking pictures and same goes for the reception; I only remember seeing him once which is just amazing. And here is the most amazing part- while we were on our honeymoon, like three days later, he emailed me to say he was sending out the three hi-res cds already and all the photos were up on his site!!! We knew he was fast but we were shocked at just how fast. Well, the photos are gorgeous. We don’t have one bad thing to say. Now, onto picking the photos for the album! 110% check out Dan; he is really a great photographer!
Videographer
Golden Moments / A+ (pending final video)
Golden Moments Photography and Video
So, video was an area that we had planned to save on at the beginning and not have it at all. Then I decided that I really wanted it but would be happy with something pretty inexpensive; just something to document the day. Would I still be happy with that if we could afford more? Yes, absolutely…but would we have an amazing video that looked like a movie and kept us intrigued the whole way through- no (and I’ve watched plenty of wedding videos to know they always get boring as I’m sure most people have too). Thing was, we didn’t have it in our budget to spend a lot on video but after checking out Golden moments, DH insisted on going with them. It was a bit of sticker shock but admittedly, Golden moments was a true cinematographer, not just a videographer who took standard wedding video. The day of the wedding, Pat, the owner was right on time and he was so fun to have around all day. Like Dan Wagner, I didn’t even realize he was there at many points. He also brought an assistant for free (this cant always happen so people shouldn’t expect it of course) which was awesome. I can’t wait until we get to see the video- I’m sure it will be awesome and I’ll be sure to update my review.
Wedding Cake/Bakery
Dortoni’s
Taste / A+
Presentation (exterior) / B
Dortoni's Bakery
I absolutely loved how our cake tasted. We had 4 tiers, 2 tiers were different than the others. One flavor combination was chocolate cake, vanilla ganache, mocha butter cream. The other combination was white cake, chocolate ganache and strawberries/whip cream mixture. The outside of the cake and all layers was regular butter cream. It was delicious! I’ve had a few compliments since the wedding day on it. Now, for the outside of the cake, I cant be too upset about this because out of all things, I was not very concerned about how the cake looked- I personally just never look at the cake at somebody’s wedding so I didn’t see it as a big deal. Well, anyway, I didn’t check and re-check the cake design like I did with everything else for the wedding so I can’t be that mad but either way when I first told them the design I wanted, I said I wanted silver/grayish bows and dark pink dots on the bottoms of the layers and then a little draping. I got the draping- perfect. The dots were in a lighter color pink and looked very messy. Some were small, some big and not evenly placed. It just looked slopped. But probably the worst was the grey fondant “bows”. They looked nothing like bows whatsoever. I have no clue what it was and it looked ugly and sloppy regardless. So, it is what it is. The really important part, the inside was great but I was just a bit embarrassed about how it looked. Just go over everything 50 times!
Shoes
Sandy’s Shoes / A+
Colorrifics 62230 / A
Sandy's Shoes
Sandy’s Shoes was awesome! Caroline, the manager/owner helped me and she was so cool and really knew what she was doing. I started looking for my shoes pretty early considering they were “just shoes”. I wish I could’ve gotten some hot looking designer shoes or whatever but I know myself all too well and I have bad feet and they start to hurt ASAP in high heels so my criteria was low, somewhat pretty, not TOO grandma-ish so I would feel good on my wedding day rather than in pain. When I told Caroline what I was looking for and that I had a wide foot, etc. she already had like 5 shoes in mind. When they didn’t work, she brought a few more and I found my shoe! That would’ve taken months and months if I had been going around to dsw, mjm, etc. with my terrible feet. I was so happy. Anyway, they dye your shoes for free at Sandy’s; just have to make sure to leave the receipt attached so when you bring them back, they know you purchased them there. I had to wait to get a swatch of my dress to bring them back a few weeks before the wedding. My mom also went there and again Caroline found the perfect shoes for my mom at a reasonable price since my mom was super tight on money. Go to Sandy’s Shoes!
The only reason I didn’t give the shoes an A+ is cuz I wasn’t totally in love with how the chunky low heel looked but that’s definitely not those poor shoes fault and no one could see them under my dress regardless. I needed something a little bit granny to get through the day! They were perfect all day; funny thing, only when every guest left I ended up putting on flip flops. For me to last in any heels for 8 hours is a miracle. Go with these shoes if you have feet like mine, believe me. Also, I got them in wide width (yeah ima mess!)
Wedding Bands
Gabriel’s @ Tri-county / A
Overstock / A+
Fortunoff / A+
Gabriel’s:
We purchased DH’s white gold band from this jeweler. It is a white gold, I think 8mm, band with a princess cut .25 in the center. We went there after hearing lots of good reviews from girls on LIW. Very happy with the quality of the ring and diamond and the gentlemen who helped us. Only thing is, I think they definitely could’ve done better with the price but DH had already agreed so what’s done is done. Gabriel’s has been there for more than 20 years, maybe even 30 so we trusted them and knew they stand behind their jewelry. I would go there again, absolutely.
Overstock:
We purchased an everyday band for DH since he works manual labor everyday and didn’t want to get the gold one messed up. So we got a tungsten carbide one from Overstock for like 60 bucks and he absolutely loves it. He says it’s so smooth and comfortable and is still getting used to the fact that it won’t scratch. He wore it the whole entire honeymoon and will be wearing it much more than the gold one. Definitely check out overstock or Amazon for these but make sure its tungsten with carbide. Do just a little research on tungsten before you purchase and you can all the details really easily.
Fortunoff:
Obviously Fortunoff is no longer in business but I had to say how much I love my wedding band from them. I wasn’t sure what I wanted and we went into The Diamond District and saw a lot of nice bands but it was overwhelming and I still hadn’t found anything I was totally in love with. While casually checking out the out of business sales at Fortunoff one day, I stopped at the jewelry counter and fell in love with this band. It was on sale; still expensive but at least discounted from the original price. I went back a day later and bought it. I am so happy with it. I get so many compliments.
Favors:
Heritagecookbook.com / A+
For favors, we did personalized cookbooks. There are a few sites (not many though) who do this but one in particular I checked out was much more expensive and the customer service wouldn’t have been half as good as I got with Heritagecookbook.com. The owner Susan will email back and forth with you with anything you need. She was really sweet and so helpful! So, to make a long story short, there are tons of options on how you want to create your book and you can enter recipes or your guests/whoever can directly go in and add recipes. I actually really enjoyed working on this little project; it was super user friendly and the finished product came out awesome!!! I personally entered all the recipes; some were our own; some were families and others were close friends. We didn’t tell the people however what the recipes were for, so they would be surprised to see their special recipe in our cookbook on the wedding day. I spent a little more on favors than I had planned but for what we got, it was well worth the price. For those who contributed, I had Tessa make up personalized favor tags thanking those people and I attached them with ribbon to the cookbook spiral binding.
Seating cards:
Weddingink.net / A+
Wedding Ink- Digital Calligraphy and Stationary
Weddingink.net is run by Nicole who used to be a LIW bride. She does digitial calligraphy at a great price. I found her while reading her review and asking her a few questions since she had done cookbooks as favors, as well. She mentioned that she just started her company and I was happy to use her services for my seating card calligraphy. She was very fast, great communication via email or phone and even dropped them off to my job since she was going to be in the area. She wrapped them so nicely- dh and I were so impressed. Definitely contact Nicole for menus, place cards, favor tags, etc. I’m sure you will be very satisfied!
BOK charm
Etsy seller, Yourcharmedwedding / A+
I am so happy I got a bok charm! It was one of the most special details on my wedding day. My grandfather was the closest family to me and he passed away the December right after I got engaged- the last thing I told him on the phone (he was in Florida) was that I got engaged and I loved him (my Grandfather) very much. I also asked DH to get on the phone with him…this is the one and only time they met/introduced at all. He was so happy for me and his brother who was with him during that time told me that the news gave my Grandpa a real spark in the last few days of his life. I’m crying now… Anyway, so yourcharmedwedding from Etsy made this really beautiful charm for me with a picture on both sides and it also had a blue pretty charm on it. I could not have been happier. It was very cheap at fewer than 10 or 11 bucks with shipping. She was very responsive to emails and great service. I cried when it came in the mail and thanked her for contributing such an important thing for my wedding day.
Night Before Hotel
Hyatt Place, Garden City / A
Hyatt Place, Garden City
DH and I lived together before getting married and I wanted to be very traditional in not seeing him until I came down the aisle and furthermore, I had one BM coming from NJ who would have to come in the night before anyway and couldn’t stay at my house because she’s highly allergic to cats so either way I would end up staying at a hotel with her. I decided to get a hotel suite for all of my girls for the night before. I am so happy I did this. Money well spent. I had the BEST time with everyone and I will never ever forget the little memories of us from the night before hanging out and waking up all together on my wedding day. I had La Quinta Inn and Suites in Garden City booked for the longest time and about 2 weeks before the wedding, I heard about The Hyatt Place which literally had just opened up in Garden City. I called up and lo n behold, the price for the same type of room was like 80 bucks cheaper if I did a “pre-book” or something where I couldn’t cancel (since it was only 2 weeks prior, I knew I would not cancel). I switched immediately. When we arrived that day, DH had driven me and one of the BMs and we asked if we could pay with a different credit card than I had put the reservation under. They said it was no problem and took his card. Well as we were about to leave for our HM, I somehow found out that they charged mine instead and I flipped out because it seemed that they had charged both his (right there at check in) and mine too. Well, I called and they basically just mixed it up and charged mine and used his for the “hold” so it was fine but could have been bad if I didn’t have enough money in my account especially since we were leaving for out of the country shortly; So that’s why an A instead of an A+. But the room was really really nice and spacious and was so cheap compared to other hotels like I said. It had 2 queen size beds and a living room area with an L shaped couch that opened up into a queen size bed. There was a nice vanity area with the sink and then another little area with a desk and a second counter with a large mirror; Also a good closet for hanging the dresses. Downstairs was a bar that also served food which was awesome! We ordered salads that night but then when some of us wanted coffee and snacks later on, they went downstairs and it was so convenient. In the morning, they had a very nice continental breakfast- never got to see it but the girls brought up loads of good food for me. When we came downstairs for the limo, the manager offered to move some furniture around just so we could take pictures- so helpful! So, go and stay at the Hyatt. I loved it there!
Rehearsal Dinner
Cavo / A++
www.cavoastoria.com
We loved our Rehearsal Dinner so much and our BP had an awesome time! Since our wedding would be fairly traditional and so was the reception hall; we wanted a place for our RD that was more modern and also a place that had some special meaning for us. Cavo is a Greek/American restaurant in Astoria, Queens and a place where we had many wonderful dinners; always loved the food and great service. The décor is just gorgeous; so modern and unique and dramatic. We knew it might be a little pricey but we were only having bridal party to the rd so we could splurge a little and wanted to treat our closest friends really well for this. I worked with Anna, the event coordinator at Cavo; she was very good; efficient and also pleasant. Cavo was running a special for a Sunday-Thursday to have the entire mezzanine level for a minimum of 20 people at a certain price and then we added on a bar package for unlimited wine, beer, soda, coffee, tea. I was so happy with how things turned out that day. As soon as we came in, I saw that they just didn’t have pitchers of wine at the tables- rather they had the bottle on the side of like 4 or 5 different wines to choose from- so impressed with that! The menu was amazing! Everyone was raving about how many choices there were. It was a full dinner with 3 appetizers to choose from, 3 entrees, and 2 desserts to choose. Anna also had a table set up on the side for us, for our BP gifts and whatever else. She was actually there the whole time along with the waiter- they were both excellent. I can not speak higher of Cavo. We had an awesome time, just relaxing that day.
I also got something extra for the girls to go with there hair and makeup so they weren’t empty handed when the guys were opening their stuff. It wasn’t a lot but just some cute stuff and I attached their cards to the bags. So it was a beach bag for only $4.99 from the Christmas Tree Shoppe, Bath and Body works soap, lotion and antibacterial. A little makeup bag and cute funky socks, and flip flops from Old Navy. They all appreciated it thought the bags were really cute!
Bridal Shower
Monahan’s / A+
www.monahansbayside.com/
Monahan’s was awesome! My mom and girls planned the shower. My mom took care of the booking of the place and coordinating everything with the manager and the girls took care of the games/favors/decorations which worked out perfectly so no-one stepped on each others toes. Monahan’s has a very nice upstairs for slightly larger parties but due to the big flight of stairs and my Grandma not walking well plus we only had about 22 people, we had the back semi-private room. I went with my mom to see the room and everything initially and was happy. That day, I was very impressed with the food and red velvet cake (which was included ? ) and the service. All guests seemed very happy. Also, included was the wishing well, the chair and umbrella. My mom was on a tight budget and Monahan’s fit in perfectly and included champagne punch like I wanted the cake and the other items I mentioned. I loved my shower and got so many beautiful things!
Congregation/Chapel
Unitarian Universalist Congregation- Shelter Rock / B+
UUSCR
Unitarian Universalism- Home Page and Find Congregations
When we first started planning our wedding, I really was set on having our ceremony at a place of worship rather than the reception hall so I thought it would be at a chapel. DH is Catholic (not practicing or religious at all, really) and I am Jewish (basically, reformed) but I still could not see having the ceremony at either a church or a temple; it just wasn’t for us. So I started my research and it seems that there are very few “chapels” in NY. There was one in Westbury I believe however I wasn’t a fan of the appearance inside and another one on the CW Post campus which I also didn’t like how it looked at all. Sooo…after searching long and hard I somehow found out about Unitarianism and the Unitarian Universalist Congregations which there happen to be a very good number across Long Island. To be extremely brief, Unitarianism is a very “all encompassing” religious belief system that draws its teaching from numerous Religions. Take a look at the site if you’re interested in more info- we are even considering joining the UUC especially when we have children and want religious education for them. Anyway, throughout the planning, I worked with a few different office personnel to coordinate times, etc. The first person was pretty good but left and I didn’t know, then a second person had no clue and the third, Susan Astor was wonderful and very competent and organized. The minister who would marry us was very laid back. We had our initial meeting him to introduce ourselves and I was a little nervous but he made us feel pretty comfortable just asking us about our families a bit and where we worked, etc. There was no pre-cana involved; just a booklet they sent to our house which we actually did complete together since we might have had to discuss it the next time- again, nervous for the next meeting lol because I didn’t want to discuss personal things with this minister who we hardly knew. Well, next meeting, again very laid back, spoke very briefly about the questions and nothing specific or embarrassing- thank God! We finalized the ceremony that day too and went over the time of the rehearsal and day of. When we first met, the minister gave us a booklet as a guide to our ceremony- we customized it a bit from that initial layout and really made it something that refelcted us. It was an interfaith ceremony, in my opinion. I was sure to have mentions of 'God' but nothing that directly was influenced by either Catholocism or Judaism. If anyone would like a copy of our ceremony to help with yours, just let me know!! So, Rehearsal went fine. Fast forward, the day of the wedding, I show up in the limo and my DOC asks me if I mind hanging out for a bit in the limo because guests are still arriving…she tried to not let me find out about this until she had to. Well now, 10 minutes go by and she comes back a little worried. I said, what’s wrong?? She had to tell me now- THE MINISTER WASN’T THERE! I totally and completely flipped out, screaming curses like one couldn’t believe in the limo. The girls looked at me in shock. I was totally calm until now! All I said to her was, ***, so is there someone else to marry me. She said, yes, the office can’t get in touch with him but there is another minister at home nearby if need be but they don’t know the ceremony layout- I didn’t really care at that point. I just got nervous that I was going to have my guests waiting for an hour or two and they would leave and my wedding day would be half ruined. OR I couldn’t get married that day, at all. Well somehow, he showed up at 3:15, only 15 minutes after the original start time. Don’t ask me why but he later said that for some reason he got confused and thought it was 4pm. Whateva- I didn’t even say anything in response. So, that was the biggest issue of the day. Other than that, the church was simply breathtaking! We took pictures in the back which was beautiful and serene; there is also an old mansion and courtyard seeing this used to be the grounds and home of some NYC socialite. The original house is still there. I was extremely happy with the picture areas for the formal photos and the look of the worship room which we got married in; this place will always hold a special place in my heart whenever I go by just knowing we were married there.
[BTuxedos
Bell Formalwear / A+
Bell Formalwear is one of our local tux places in our neighborhood in Bayside but it’s also been around for over 40 years I think and has become pretty well known. It’s family run by the owner Spiro. He really knows what he’s doing and it shows. The tuxes looked so good; all the guys looked perfect! I loved the color. Great customer service; one of the gms pants were a tad off in the waist (he thinks he gained a little weight from when he got measured) and Spiro took it right in the back and took the pants out within minutes and they were perfect. The best man also brought it back a day late and no charge as a favor. I would only go here for a tux in the future.
Veil
Barron’s @ Tri-County / A+
Barron’s is so well known all over LIW and after seeing the prices of veils at the bridal shops; I headed to Barron’s. I worked with the head guy because I wanted to be sure my order was correct and I placed it was someone who could give me suggestions, etc. What I got wasn’t cheap by any means but for the same thing at a bridal salon or any other custom veil place, it could have been double or more. I got a finger tip veil with rhinestone trimming and small rhinestones scattered throughout. Then I got a plain cathedral which could be attached/de-attached and also a blusher that could be de-attached. I removed both the cathedral veil and the blusher after or formal pictures were taken. I was very happy with the service at Barron’s- when I ordered, he asked me exactly what date I wanted the veil and he had it on that exact date; they steamed it for me and packaged it very nicely in a large box. I would highly recommend Barron’s.
Day of Bra
Yvettes Lingerie (Bayside, Queens) / A+
Getting a bra was a saga in itself. The girls are pretty big and I needed something with great support for under my dress. Well, I got a great bra originally at Blums in Patchogue, only to find out that it could be seen under my dress. There are no returns and exchanges so I lost my money there and refused to get a second one there, risking losing more money. I finally found Yvettes and the woman there was super friendly and knew exactly what she was doing. She got me a bra just as great and was a little lower, I loved that I could exchange the bra if need be. It’s a lingerie shop so I could have always found something or just another bra.
DOJ
Bella Tiara / A+
Jewelry counter 2 behind Barron’s @ Tri-county (can’t remember the name) / A+
DOJ was a little bit of a headache for me. I have a slit on one of my ears all the way back to Kindergarten so I needed something not too heavy but still wanted something long and substantial for my wedding day. Bracelet- I wanted a cuff and then after purchasing a gorgeous one, I didn’t like how a cuff looked on my wrist. Anyway, I ended up getting my earrings from the booth at Tri-County and this was my favorite piece of doj; I can’t wait to wear them again to another nice event/wedding. Prices were comparable to other places and the lady there is very sweet and helpful. She had a good selection of things and a lot of pieces that one sees online she had which was nice to see in person. The bracelet and necklace I got from Bella Tiara, online. Very impressed with the quality of the jewelry from this site; everything I purchased was exactly how it looked in the photos- even better. I spent a lot of money here since I bought another pair of earrings (I wanted to have some options but then they were way too heavy and large for me and didn’t go with my dress). And I bought that gorgeous cuff which just didn’t go with me, for the wedding day. I decided to not sell it though and will wear it when I go out to dinner or wherever else.
Groomsmen Gifts
Exclusivelyweddings.com / B+
(Graphite Face Watch/Money clip) / A+
DH got the guys baseball jerseys of their favorite team and these watch/money clips with their initials engraved. Exclusivelyweddings was okay but a little annoyed that we paid for 3 day shipping and it didn’t come for 7 days. I realize that its only M-F that are considered as part of those days but I also would appreciate it not taking more than 48 hours for it to ship in the first place. When I called a few times, they kept saying I ordered it 2 days later than I actually had. Then after that was figured out, they said I would get an email with a tracking number when it shipped- never happened. It finally got here 2 days before the RD. Just not great customer service in that respect. The product however was great.
The watch/money clips were great. All the guys loved them. The watch part itself looks really nice- not cheap at all and the guys were saying how they like that the clips were pretty tight, apparently some money clips are looser. The engraving was great and if the initials didn’t have a middle initial, it was still centered…we were worried, it might come not centered because it wasn’t three letters. DH wishes he bought one for himself.
Honeymoon
Excellence Playa Mujeres (Riviera Maya, Mexico) / A++++++++++++++++++++++++++
EPM
EPM Was Amazing!!!!!!!!!!!
First of all, you are treated like kings and queens, they will do anything you need and always with a smile on their face and seem genuinely happy to help and go over and beyond. It is SUPER all inclusive like not only are all meals and drinks all included but room service is and so is the stocked mini bar including snacks everyday!!!
Just for us personally, we wanted to stretch the HM as far as possible so we stayed in a standard room. I could honestly say that what they call 'standard' is GREAT! Huge beautiful shower double sinks with a nice vanity with plenty of storage and shelves. The shower has shelves and a double seat and two shower heads. There is a separate door to the actual toilet. This was the only weird thing...the door was frosted most of the way but not on the sides and was open on the top and the bottom. so I mean, I know we were married and all but it was still weird 'at times' so we just kinda did a...hey babe...check out the view on the balcony lol, when we needed more privacy but everything was perfec; it didn’t bother us at all. They just try to make the rooms all about closeness and being married and stuff I think, lol. Even in our standard room was a living room area and a step up Jacuzzi with windows and curtains out onto the balcony. From what I hear the two story roof top Jacuzzi is basically the same inside but of course the outside is the key! The balcony from what I could see is just as huge as in looks in pics! I'm sure its awesome being up there. I do have to say though that its not super private like one might think or want considering you have that Jacuzzi up there. From our balcony, we could see the bed on the rooftop terrace (which there are beds on all the balconies and they are heaven on earth to lay out there). I couldn’t see anything else but there are a few rooftop terrace suites slightly above others and I think you might be able to see more from them.
Ok the food, reallllly awesome! I mean let me put it this way, my husband and I when we want to splurge we go to super expensive restaurants and drop a like 300 bucks and the food is nothing to be compared to. Ok...well the food might not quite be as good as that and Mexico is not NY, like one of the food capitals of the world, you know what I mean. But lets say this, I could have any of the meals I had at epm at a really great restaurant in ny and have paid a nice chunk of money and it would totally compare. It was great quality and well prepared and really delicious. It wasn’t like what some people think of when they think of 'all inclusive food'. I have to say, for being outside of the US; we were both extremely impressed with all of the food. Our favorite restaurants were Barcelona, the Mediterranean one where we went twice. I had the moussaka both times and dh had the shrimp and scallops over pasta which was so yummy., both times we split appetizers of fried seafood like calamari and shrimp which was so good (better quality calamari than some places ive had at home). We also had tuna tartar which was soooooo refreshing and good. They give pitas with different dips to start at this restaurant and I loved that! I forget dessert but it was good lol. Our other favorite was Chez Isabel, the French restaurant. This is the most romantic of all the restaurants. DH had steak both times and I had steak once and duck the next. Both were so so good. One night they had a Mexico themed night with a huge buffet set up in the courtyard and all different decorations. Food was great!
Each night, there was some live entertainment in the main area by the main bar outside which was really nice. We would sit and drink before or after dinner. Then there was a show...Michael Jackson show and the Mexican shows were our favorites. The other shows were a magic show, a circus show and I think one more I can’t remember. The last two were nothing too special but we didn’t care. We sat in the beautifully open air theatre in the comfy seats and drank and just enjoyed being there every night. After the show each night, there was a lounge/small club open which would be even better if more people went. We didn’t care though, some night it was only like 5 people in there and we danced anyway and drank, lol. They have 1 or 2 nights with karaoke and those nights it was packed from the people who stayed from karaoke.
Oh the beach…The sand was supersoft and the water was nice a greenish-blue. There was some seaweed in some areas but others were definitely less. And once you went out a bit, no seaweed. Pretty calm waters unless it was going to rain or something and even then, waves were still so low and I’m a big scaredy cat usually. DH likes the beach better than pool and he loved it! The water was definitely warmer than the pool which was soooooo nice! A waitress also comes around on the beach from epm which is awesome! But it’s not a wide beach either way so if you had to go up to the bathroom or bar, it’s not a long walk and believe me, I’m lazy to go anywhere once I’m on the beach. HA
The pool was awesome! There’s a main pool area with the swim up bar...we actually never went in that part. We kind of like it to be quieter when we’re in the water and less people and that part was definitely busiest. So there are other pools that stream all along epm which are a little less congested and relaxing. Everyone floats around on these awesome blue floats which are so relaxing. Also I loved that there was like a sunken in pool deck with lounge chairs in the water. LOVED that.
Stunning spa! DH and I both got pedicures, hehe; he won’t at home ever! Then I got a Swedish massage one day. Both were great and so relaxing. Heaven!
Ok, what else. The resort is spotless and you can see them working so hard to keep it pristine. There are people cutting off dead leaves one by one every day, other people in harnesses cleaning windows. There are fresh flowers everywhere and floors are polished constantly. It fees totally 5 star and luxurious. Drinks are good! workers are so hard working...I know tips are included but we always gave something when we ate and if we used the same bartender for a few drinks, its not like here where a tip is almost expected. They truly work for it and it means so much to them. That was just our personal choice. Concierge was great when we needed something too. They have a business center with 4 computers with full internet to use for free for as long as you need. There is an indoor game room and also a few games outside, plenty of activities everyday which we never did but sounded awesome if we wanted. There were water activities which you can purchase and would leave directly from epm if you wanted.
Btw- We loved EPM so much that we had originally planned to split our hm between two resorts. The day before we were going to leave, we decided to not tempt fate and didn’t want to end up not loving the second place just as much. So we cancelled the other resort and extended our stay at EPM. Well worth it!
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR READING EVERYONE! ENJOY YOUR WEDDING DAYS AND MAY THEY BE THE BEST DAY OF YOUR LIFE- MY WEDDING DAY CERTAINLY WAS THE BEST DAY OF MY LIFE, BY BAR. NOTHING HAS COMPARED AND I WILL LOOK BACK ON IT WITH THE FONDEST MEMORIES EVER.
