I can offer feedback about my experience as a DJ/MC...
As a sole proprietor who performs at every wedding that I book, I never expect to receive a tip although one is often given. Don't feel pressured or obligated to do so. Some feel as though the owner of a business shouldn't be tipped, and on occasion my associate is the only one to receive a tip. Sometimes we receive seperate tips, and sometimes it is only handed to me. I find that when I receive a tip, there is no standard prescribed amount. I've had tips ranging from $40 to $300, and the amount does not make one more meaningful than another. The simple fact the a client is moved to tip 'anything' conveys to me that they feel that my services had exceeded their expectations. The dollar amount is not important. It is the gesture that is much appreciated, just as the gesture of being provided dinner is thoughtful as well. If you feel inclined to tip because you feel that the service was beyond what was anticipated, choose an amount that is comfortable for you.

As the owner of the company I do not expect to receive tips when I personally perform. I would much prefer a letter of recommendation from a satisfied client with their comments on my band's performance -and with their permission to use their letter of recommendation for future reference.
