I know..i'm not exactly make the boards less controversial...but I'm not asking this to start controversy, but rather just for my own knowledge...
Does anyone consider themselves to be pro-life? As someone who is pro-life with reservations (i think should be ok in cases of rape, incest, & endangerment to the mother) I just always feel in the minority. Which i know i am...I grew up in a big irish catholic family who ingrained in my head that life began at conception..and that every life is precious. I am trying to figure out things for myself, and really understand my views...
One thing i'd like to add is that i would never press my beliefs upon someone else-I know abortion is one of the hardest things a woman could ever decide to do. Just wanted to know if anyone felt similar to me in their own personal belief system?

I am pro life. But I am also for women being able to control their own bodies. I think that by taking away a woman's right to choose isn't going to change a thing- women will still get abortions if they are desperate enough.. I think we need to teach people to be more responsible- men & women- when having sex- I think emphasis should be on condom use, family planning, and yes- even abstinence... but to me, you just can't say- no to sex education, no to abortion...

we actually agree i think you can say no to abortion, but not right now
i agree there must be greater education and knowledge that abortion is not the only option--there's adoption

Thanks guys..
You are right when you say taking away the right won't change things. And yes, I would hate to be told what to do with my body as well...what works for me may not work for others whatever their reasoning is.
Sex education is so important...I once read an article in Time magazine about women using abortion as their form of birth control..it disgusted me. Never mind your personal stance on abortion, i think most would agree how disturbing that is!

Pro-choice here.
Would I ever have an abortion, even in the worse case senerio, rape, incest. I don't think I would, but having the right to make the choice best for me, is what is most important.

Re: Sensitive topic but curious to know..
Hmm, I am pro-choice, but with reservations. I think partial term abortions are digusting and should be banned.
I am think abortions should be stopped at 20 weeks because that is the youngest age when a child has been born and survived, so it was viable.
I think abortions should be done at hospitals and NOT at clinics. I think too many clinics are just abortion warehouses and they do too much to promote that option instead of giving women other options.
I don't think ANY procedures should be done on children without parental notification. All other surgeries require a parent's signature, why not this one.
I think responsibility has gone out of this coutrny. Everyone blames someone else for their problems. If womeon took responsibilty for their bodies, there would be a lot less abortions.

Re: Sensitive topic but curious to know..
I'm with you. And everyone seems to confuse this as a RELIGIOUS issue. I disagree. It is a MORAL issue and I do not think that GWB is attempting to impose his faith on anyone based on his stance. It is an issue concerning how we as a society value life.
People automatically assume that I am some sort of religious zealot for my pro-life stance. This could not be further from the truth. I was raised without any religion and was torn on this subject. However, when you read any biology/embryology text, it will tell you that life begins at conception, that a heart is beating at 21 days past conception, etc. These scientific facts, not religious ideals, impressed me. I think that there should be exceptions in the case of danger to a mother's life, rape and incest. However, abortion for convenience is, in my opinion, a disgrace and will hopefully be overruled.

People really do confuse this as being a religious issue...and you are 100% right when you say it's a society issue. I used to think it was a catholic issue myself...10 years of CCD will do that to you
It is an issue that will never be clear cut and there will always be opposing views. Its human nature, just like every other controversial topic...
I'm glad though to hear I'm not completely alone. I know I shouldn't be so hesitant to know what I feel is right for me, but when the overwhelming majority of people around me are pro-choice, it can be disconcerting.

I agree completely. I think people need to pick thier battles. Abstinence only sex ed means people still have sex, but theyd on;t sue condoms..unwanted pregnancy, abortion decision...we need to reduce THOSE isntances before we cna reduce abortions..
I agree with Bill Clinton, abortion should be safe, legal and rare.

pro-choice - keep it legal and keep it safe. i know someone who had an abortion and i know it was not easy. would i have one now? probably not, if it was a 'normal' pregnancy, not etopic (sp) where the baby grows in my fallobian tubes. but if i ever get raped, i know i would have one, and i want that option afforded to me.

I have three friends who have had abortions and I am pro-life. I also disagree that in cases of rape, abortion is suddenly the right thing to do. Of course carrying a rapist's baby would be extremely difficult, but the baby is still a life.

I agree. I think that making abortion against the law will only create more 'back-alley' abortions and many more problems. There are so many touchy aspects to this issue so I don't know if any president will ever come up with the right answer or at least an answer to satisfy everyone

Re: Sensitive topic but curious to know..
I guess I am pro choice. I believe that a woman should have the right to make her own decision when it comes to this matter. It is a very personal choice that should not be decided by the government. Making abortion illegal would just cause there to be more back alley abortions, which could end in death or serious injury for the woman involved.
Personally I would never choose to have an abortion (except in cases of rape). There are so many families that would do anything to have children but cannot. I would choose to put the child up for adoption if I could not care for him/her.

Re: Sensitive topic but curious to know..
I have trouble understanding those who are Pro-Life but yet say abortion is ok in the situation of rape and/or incest. What makes that unborn baby different from one that was an 'oops'? Isn't it about the life, not how it happened, making abortion under any circumstances wrong?

Re: Sensitive topic but curious to know..
It makes it different because when a woman is raped or in cases of incest where sex is forced upon her without consent, it sheds a different light on the subject. I believe that when you choose to have sex, you choose to accept the consequences that may result. A woman who is raped didn't have that choice...
For me, I would have the baby if I were god forbid raped. I couldn't go through with an abortion...but i can't say that others would feel the same way.

Re: Sensitive topic but curious to know..
I'm not trying to call anyone a hypocrite, but can you really be pro-life and believe that abortion in the case of rape is ok? If you're pro-life that should include under any circumstances. I'm personally pro-choice and know many people who have had abortions. It has been any easy decision for some, which I really can't understand, and a painful decision for others. Either way, I believe it's a woman's choice what to do with her body. I definitely agree with the sentiment that sex education is of the utmost importance. The more educated our youth, and not so youthful, are the less need there will be for abortions.
