Annulment 2 weeks after wedding (no, not mine!)

Annulment 2 weeks after wedding (no, not mine!)

We went to a wedding 2 months ago. We heard a rumor that the couple got in a huge fight on their honeymoon, came back early, and she moved back in with her parents. It's true. The couple got an annulment! Friends of ours are mad that the couple didn't return the gifts. I think they should keep them bc we had a good time at the wedding and got to eat/ drink/ hang out w/ friends. What do u guys think?

BTW...the couple was together for 6 years before getting married!

i dont know, thats sticky.....

id probably want my money back b/c i am a biatch but at the same time i am sure something horrible must have happened to make them split up and that is sad, i am sure they have bigger things to deal with than refunding their guests.....that has to be so embarrasing not to mention the heartbreak

they were together for 6 years - it must have been some fight

thats so sad! I say let them keep the gifts the more important issue is the breakup of their marriage- they may give them back but I would guess thats the last thing that they are thinking about

I think the rule is that if the marriage lasts less than a year you are supposed to send the gift back.

If it were me - if I was married 2 months and broke up with my DH - I would feel HORRIBLE keeping any gifts. I'd return them.

thats a hard situation. I would probably send them back..I would feel guilty keeping 'wedding' gifts if the marraige was over!

I would send them back. The gifts are for a marriage that no longer exists..

Oh that is sad..I probably wouldn't even think about the gift honestly. It wouldn't matter to me I would be more concerned that they are ok.

Exactly. I know it would be NICE to have the money to pay for the wedding - but honestly - that's your f-up if you end a marriage after 2 months, not the guests'. Guests shouldn't pay to have a good time in my opinion - they give a gift because they are celebrating and want to help you have a good start, you know?

That being said - if I were a guest at this wedding - I wouldn't be thinking of getting my money back .. not at first at least. I'd be thinking about their happiness and their problems, and feeling bad for them as people that something so horrible was wrong and they didn't know it.

If this happened to my friend the last thing I would be thinking about is getting my money back! I think that they have a lot more on their mind the returning gifts.

Couldnt have said it better.
It is a tough situation but I really wouldn't be concerned about the money or the gifts that I gave. If it was an E-party or even a Bridal Shower fine send the gifts back. Right now they have a whole lot more on their plates to worry about.

my friend did that, her marriage was annulled and completed within four months of her wedding. they started the process one month after. no gifts were returned. it's really sticky

I wouldnt want the gift back. i think they are probably going through enough. And besides, they did have a nice party where everybody ate and drank for the night. I'm sure they are having a really hard time and returning the gifts might be really embarrassing and hard for them to do.

This is not something people should be thinking about when a marriage doesn't work out. if anythings they should be worried about the two people involved and hope they are ok.

I wouldn't want the gift back either, plus if they do return the gifts then does that set a precendence to return the bridal shower gifts as well?

You would give them back, so would I....but I would never be MAD at a friend going through this if this wasnt on the top of the list of priorites...I think that the friends who are 'mad' they didnt get their gift back yet are out of line...with friends like that who needs enemies

I don't know if I'd expect the gift back. You're giving a gift at these occasion to be nice, and you don't necessarily give it to someone with a clause saying you must give it back to me if your marriage does not last more than a year. The definition of a gift is: something given voluntarily without payment in return, as to show favor toward someone, honor an occasion, or make a gesture of assistance; present.

Yes you're giving the gift in honor of these people's marriage, but I don't know if you can put a time limit on it. You did still go to a big party and celebrate these 2 people, even if they only did make it 2 weeks.

I would definitely be annoyed and think to myself, ugh that stinks, I just gave them a nice gift and now they're split up. But I don't think I'd expect it to be returned.

I would return the gifts, but thats me. Then again, everyone still partied, ate good food. But when I give a gift for a wedding, I give that gift in hopes that they will use it to start their lives together. And now they arent starting a life together. They should give it back. Its not right to me.

The last thing on their minds right now is wedding gifts, but I think the right thing to do is return them. Maybe not immediately, but eventually. If it were me, I wouldn't be able to keep gifts that were given to me as a token of best wishes for my marriage. Two months isn't a marriage!
