Anti-American School?

Original post by Butterfly123

I couldnt believe what my friend told me the other day. She is a teacher at a school in Rhode Island and she told me they are not allowed to sing the National Anthem or say the Pledge of Allegiance. When she first started working there, she said she brought it up and it was like a taboo subject. The principal actually told her that we as Americans have nothing to be proud of so its not allowed. She even told me a music teacher was fired for not listening to this rule and allowing his children to sing 'American' songs. One of her fellow co-workers is from England and she told her people in England laugh at us Americans for our 'American pride' and its ridiculous. This really infuriated me. I cant believe this is how our schools are being run nowadays.

My confession:

I am a Jew, and every single one of my ancestors was Jewish.  And it does not bother me even a little bit when people call those beautiful lit up, bejeweled trees, Christmas trees..  I don't feel threatened.  I don't feel discriminated against. That's what they are:  Christmas trees.

It doesn't bother me a bit when people say, 'Merry Christmas' to me.  I don't think they are slighting me or getting ready to put me in a ghetto.  In fact, I kind of like it.  It shows that we are all brothers and sisters celebrating this happy time of year. It doesn't bother me at all that there is a manger scene on display at a key intersection near my beach house in Malibu .  If people want a crèche, it's just as fine with me as is the Menorah a few hundred yards away.

I don't like getting pushed around for being a Jew, and I don't think Christians like getting pushed around for being Christians.  I think people who believe in God are sick and tired of getting pushed around, period.  I have no idea where the concept came from that America is an explicitly atheist country.  I can't find it in the Constitution and I don't like it being shoved down my throat.

Or maybe I can put it another way: where did the idea come from that we should worship celebrities and we aren't allowed to worship God as we understand Him?  I guess that's a sign that I'm getting old, too.   But there are a lot of us who are wondering where these celebrities came from and where the America we knew went to.

In light of the many jokes we send to one another for a laugh, this is a little different:  This is not intended to be a joke; it's not funny, it's intended to get you thinking.

Billy Graham's daughter was interviewed on the Early Show and Jane Clayson asked her 'How could God let something like this happen?' (regarding Katrina) Anne Graham gave an extremely profound and insightful response.  She said, 'I believe God is deeply saddened by this, just as we are, but for years we've been telling God to get out of our schools, to get out of our government and to get out of our lives.  And being the gentleman He is, I believe He has calmly backed out.  How can we expect God to give us His blessing and His protection if we demand He leave us alone?'

In light of recent events... terrorists attack, school shootings, etc.  I think it started when Madeleine Murray O'Hare (she was murdered, her body found a few years ago) complained she didn't want prayer in our schools, and we said OK.  Then someone said you better not read the Bible in school. The Bible says thou shalt not kill, thou shalt not steal, and love your neighbor as yourself.  And we said OK.

Then Dr. Benjamin Spock said we shouldn't spank our children when they misbehave because their little personalities would be warped and we might damage their self-esteem (Dr Spock's son committed suicide).  We said an expert should know what he's talking about.  And we said OK.

Now we're asking ourselves why our children have no conscience, why they don't know right from wrong, and why it doesn't bother them to kill strangers, their classmates, and themselves.

Probably, if we think about it long and hard enough, we can figure it out.  I think it has a great deal to do with 'WE REAP WHAT WE SOW.'

Funny how simple it is for people to trash God and then wonder why the world's going to hell  Funny how we believe what the newspapers say, but question what the Bible says.  Funny how you can send 'jokes' through e-mail and they spread like wildfire but when you start sending messages regarding the Lord, people think twice about sharing.  Funny how lewd, crude, vulgar and obscene articles pass freely through cyberspace, but public discussion of God is suppressed in the school and workplace.

Are you laughing yet?

Funny how when you forward this message, you will not send it to many on your address list because you're not sure what they believe, or what they will think of you for sending it.

Funny how we can be more worried about what other people think of us than what God thinks of us.

Pass it on if you think it has merit.  If not then just discard it... no one will know you did.  But, if you discard this thought process, don't sit back and complain about what bad shape the world is in.

My Best Regards,  Honestly and respectfully,
Ben Stein

I think some schools also cant have x-mas stuff up either, i know i saw this somewhere. SOME schools have done this but its not something that many schools have done yet but who knows it might be done at more schools in the near future.

Dont get me started Im dealing with some of these issues in my daughters school

WOW are they not going to do x-mas things I HATE hearing these things. What is wrong with people. If there is an issue why dont they do something for every religion. In school they would have things for the jewish holidays, we would learn about kwanzaa. Instead of banning anything we just had a mixture of everything and learned about all of them.

I remember when I was in school we sang Silent night but now they will only sing seasonal songs that have nothing to do with God but they sing Hannukah songs and Kwanza songs ,which is fine but dont take things away from us

My parents emigrated to this country in the early 60's. They went to school to learn english because that was the spoken and written language of this country. I was raised to be an American, but I also learned my German heritage and to speak and write German.

My parents did not assume that this country would change for them, rather they changed for their new country.

Wouldn't it be nice if this was still so ?

same here, my parents wanted me to learn american traditions but at the same time i was also taught romanian traditions. I was never told not to follow american traditions and only mine. They also changed and didnt expect the US to change for them. They became custom to american traditions and both traditions are followed in my home. You dont have to bash one and only accept one. YOu can accept both

I remember reading this article and how I kept nodding my head in agreement with all the points Stein made. Sometimes we hurt ourselves more by trying to be 'fair' then by letting things be.

Ditto! I always grew up respecting my Italian and Irish heritage- Irish esp because my grandparents were off the boat but they respected this country.

At the turn of the century people were coming into this country by the boat load and were given rifles and had to serve in the American army so that their families could try to have a better life. They were vested in this country already! Its amazing to me that now we have people that don't even want their children- who are getting a FREE EDUCATION from the citizens hard earned dollars in this country to pledge allegiance to our national symbol!

What I dont understand is, are they removing it because of 'One Nation under God' and if thats the case, theyre removing it solely for the atheists out there?? If thats the reason why thats even more upsetting. To me God is a universal word that can represent any religion so I dont see people from other faiths being offended by it

Thats just crazy to me. Because people dont believe were OFFENDING them?? Were supposed to suppress our beliefs to accomdate them?? What about us?? It seems very one sided. And Im not even religious. I dont believe in organized religion but thats about it. I have my other beliefs.

But whats even crazier is that my friend said they actually told her we dont have any reason to be proud of our country. That says theyre banning it not because of religion but because they dont love their country???? Thats 18378974298374972 times worse

Yea seriously that is worse! Because not only is it a personal believe of an educational administrator but she's imposing it on an ENTIRE school! that's just terrible!

Exactly and my friend said that woman isnt the only one who thinks that way. I dont understand, so why are they in this country trying to spread their disease on to the children?? Move away or at least dont be a teacher

Ew I dont know if I would let my child go to a school like that. You want them to feel safe and grateful for what they have and where they live and thats not a great way to show it. That is def crazy!!!

I can't emphasize this point enough.. i am indian, but bornandraised in the middle east and i came here at 9 and my parents helped us grow within our culture and we in turn, showed them the American way of life.. though they are professionals with multiple degrees, at times they're views can be a skewed I guess it's partially because of their upbringing, my grandparents weren't as worldly..

but there are so many people within my community that just does not accept the American culture and it pisses me off to no end when all they talk about is how great it was back home.. so frriggin go back 'home' and they probably would kick you out for being as retarded!!
