for my kids communions/ christenings the god parents always have given more then the other guests.......but I think what you can afford id fine

my son is receiving his first holy communion this May and we're having a little party.. I would hate for my sister & brother to feel obligated to give that amount.. they just had babies and bought homes.

yikes.

absolutely . I would never and have never asked or told people what to get...thats just what they did...I think people should do what they can....I have never given any of my god children 1000.00
for communion and christening its been 500 and a piece of jewlery

im sorry I didn't mean to imply that at all... I think it's great you received sucha generous gift

Cash.

I don't know.....maybe $500 since you're the aunt/godmother...maybe more? Or am I nuts?

Am I the only one who thinks that's nuts?

i was thinking the same thing! im like
i would never be able to afford that for a communion.. i dont even give that for a wedding unless im in it!

Not for anyone's communion of course, but for my godchild who is also my niece/nephew, yes.

i guess if you have the money than thats great! for my godchild i still wouldnt be able to give that much.. i dont even think they would expect that.. i know i wouldnt. i would be happy with $100.. just seems a bit much to me..

Oh no, don't get me wrong, it's not like we're dripping with money...not even close. It's just how it's done in my family I guess sooo.....that's what we do. Also, it's like, we know when events like that are coming up, just like a wedding or whatever, so we save for it just like anything else. It's not like the christening just appears out of nowhere and we have to come up with $500 that we have laying around...cause we don't have $500 bucks just laying around, trust me.

ETA: Also, I don't think giving any less is wrong, or not enough or whatever....i hope it didn't come off that way. Every situation is different, like I said, that's just how it works in my family.....but you always just give what you can and whatever that is is always enough.

Re: Communion gift...

oldlady here is real old fashioned in this department and I think when deciding on amount alot depends on what's going to happen with the gift. If the child is getting it and keeping it to do whatever with (video games???) I would not give a large amount. I personally think kids today are way too spoiled with what stuff they get. If on the other hand you know the parents want the money to go into the bank, saved for college etc then a more generous gift could be given.

Of course, it's always what you can afford and if it's only a nice card , well the kids should be taught that that's fine too and say thank you.

I hope no one gets offended by this cause I certainly don't mean to do that. and as with posts, this is just my humble (tho strong) opinion.
