i am mostly puerto rican, don't speak a lick of spanish (yes, i admit it ) but that is the one PR dish i can actually make. granted, i haven't made it in about a year, but when we move into our house, that's one of the first things i plan on making. i would give you a recipe, but i just sorta wing it when i cook it. i also only use the dry beans in a bag, not the canned beans. my grandma always used the bag beans, so i can tell the difference in taste right away when canned beans are used. it takes longer, but it's so worth it!

Can you come over one night and show me??? Once I've seen it once, I can usually make it. That would make you un-useless

I used to food run at a few restaurants and i'd watch them cook all night... that is how i learned how to make chicken franchese, chicken marsala, alfredo, etc.

Re: Cooking Help Please: PR Red Beans & Rice

I am going to try to measure when I cook tonight. I normally just put the ingredients without measuring. I will update tonight or tommorrow just in case I dont have time to cook.

Just in case here is a basic:

Red beans ( I am lazy so I use the canned ones)

Can of Red Beans (Goya)
I put a pot and add a little bit of oil
Add a chicken bouillon
1 tablespoon of garlic
1 tablespoon of onions
I small can of tomato sauce
1/4 green pepper

One the oil in the pot is hot, I add the chicken bouillon, garlic , onions and tomato sauce and let it simmer. I then add can of red beans (With the water). I fill the can of red beans with water and add that to the pot. I throw in a couple of pieces of green pepper for flavor and I turn the heat down. After about 5-10 minutes you will start to notice the sauce getting thick.

White Rice:

1 cup of rice
2 cups of water
1 tablespoon of salt
oil

Put pot with a little bit of oil, add about a tablespoon of salt. Add 2 cups of water. Once the water is boiling add 1 cup of rice. When you see the rice is 'dry' lower the heat and cover your pot.
This should take about 20 minutes for the rice to fully cook.

i use the same ingredients, i add chicken bouillon, garlic, onions and sometimes green peppers

i boil the rice, but then i use a pan to do it together bc i like it like that. In a pan i heat up a little bit of oil and add the rice and beans together in that pan and let it cook together for a few mins

I wasnt sure if it was a different type of rice and beans that was asked maybe with the gandules i thought since i do see alot of PR recipes with those type of beans. I used to go to alot of colombian restaurants, most were colombian i think and a few others and the way i wrote above is how most did it, although some add pork fat and a few other things.

At least you can make it! I just perfected white rice the other day and I don't even make beans with it because I don't like them. I am a bad Puerto Rican!

I am a really picky eater so I dont add all the extras. Normally in colombian restaurants they do that have sausage.

Yeah Guandules and Beans are cooked the same. (At least I do)
