At least you can make it! I just perfected white rice the other day and I don't even make beans with it because I don't like them. I am a bad Puerto Rican!

here's my secret - i buy the white rice from the chinese take out place i always burn my rice however, i got a rice cooker at my shower, so i really can't wait to use it to make rice and beans again!

OMG I am so relieved to hear you say that- dh makes fun of me to no end for using my rice maker- but it comes out awful if I dont use it!

how does it come out?? i can't wait it use mine!!

Here's the recipe from my neighbor.

I use Goya kidney beans in a small pot
add water to just over beans
add 1/2 can of tomato sauce (little can)
add some spices like onion powder, garlic powder, salt and pepper, and 'sazon' for color
add a few small diced potatoes
let simmer until potatoes are soft.

White rice
let 3 cups of water boil
add 1 tbspn of oil
tspn of salt
add 2 1/2 cups of rice
let it simmer their on medium, stirring frequently, until water starts evaporating
then put on low heat and cover
stir every 15 mins
make sure you don't let it burn
it should be done in about 20-25 min

Do you want the one where the rice is mixed with the beans or white rice and red beans??

white rice with red beans

i am mostly puerto rican, don't speak a lick of spanish (yes, i admit it ) but that is the one PR dish i can actually make. granted, i haven't made it in about a year, but when we move into our house, that's one of the first things i plan on making. i would give you a recipe, but i just sorta wing it when i cook it. i also only use the dry beans in a bag, not the canned beans. my grandma always used the bag beans, so i can tell the difference in taste right away when canned beans are used. it takes longer, but it's so worth it!

i tried making arroz con gandules with the dried beans and it took FOREVER.

the beans in the bag do take FOREVER. The first time I tried making it i used the beans in the bag, i did this when i was teenager many years ago and i had no idea those type of beans take so long. I told my mom about it and she said yeah in the bag they take hours to cook or you can leave them in water to soak over-night.
