I posted about birthdays, but I guess my real question is how involved are both families? My sister suggested inviting in-laws to her house for my birthday, and my aunt invited them to her house for Xmas - personally I think its too much...am I wrong?
Should the families be this close? I didn't think so - waht do you think?

Re: family gatherings
In an ideal world you might want both sets of families to be really close, but sometimes that is not possible.
My family is the BEST. They are fun , wonderful people. We are very close and you can tell we really love each other. My inlaws are the opposite. They are very simple, low key type of people. They are very antisocial.
my MIL gets along great with my family, but my FIL keeps to myself. I do not push alot of interaction. When we have kids all I ask is that both sets show up for the important events, birthdays, christenings, graduations etc.
I am so ok with the way things are.

Re: family gatherings
I think its great if they get along and can be friends. Why does it make you uncomfortable?
In my case, everyone gathers at our house for Christmas dinner..but that is the only time everyone is together. Not that they would ever get along anyway but my husbandds family doesnt speak any english so that makes it slight barrier to friendship. hahahahh

Re: family gatherings
we're very family oriented so one birthday comes and the whole fam is over. i think it's more fun .. and we get along with everyone so it's great. family is just really important to us so we like them all to be there, parents and in-laws alike.

Re: family gatherings
Growing up, the 'in-laws' on either side were always invited for the holidays, parties and BBQ's that growing up I could never get straight who was REALLY my relative and who wasnt!! I called everyone Aunt and Uncle!!

Not sure why I'm uncomfortable - I just don't feel like I relax around them.

Re: family gatherings
I am hoping that we can all be together. I don't think my aunt will invite them to her house, but I am hoping it will be great when we start ahving holidays at our house. At least it will make it easier for us, since we go to both houses on every holiday.

Re: family gatherings
They are VERY involved.. they hang out together quite often and both families are always invited to the others for get-togethers. It's awesome.. We're even planning a family vacation...

Re: family gatherings
The only thing that I 'mix' the inlaws with is mine and hubby's birthday. We do xmas and every other holiday seperate. The two families are not friends (they are nice to eachother but both families are totally different) and I don't want either one to be uncomfortable. And honestly both my husband and I are more comfortable with my family and I don't want to lose that : ).
i think it says a lot about how you were raised...if in-laws were always mixed you may be more open...
my 2 grandmothers both spoke German so there was an instant connection...and my dad and mom's father became best friends (one of the only times I saw me dad cry was when he died)
they are invited to weddings...breakfast...anniversaries...everything...my mother has done the same with my ILs...even my cousin's MIL...
my MIL loves it...b/c her other DIL is a crazy biotch and her family is not at all friendly...

Re: family gatherings
I wish that my own family got along that well. But I see in Dh's family that the inlaws can all hang out together and I think it is great. It will never happen in my family though I wish it would.
Helen you know I am uncomfortable around my MIL but you know why too. In ideal world I wish they all could just get along!

Re: family gatherings
My family spends both christmas and Thanksgiving with my brother's in-laws, and I invited them all to my wedding. But we have known them since I was 13 years old, so almost 20 years.
