Getting your hair done...how often and how much?

Original post by Jenn04

This is a constant agrument with DH and its starting to wear on me. He thinks it costs too much and that I go to often and always complains about it. Everytime I have an appt, he is like 'oh didnt you just go' And last time he told me to die my hair back brown! I think he was dead serious too and I am so irritated about this.

Anyway I go every 5-6 weeks. Sometimes I will wait longer but it depends. My hair is very dark and my roots show fast.

Full foil, cut and blow out usually runs $160-170

Everything other time I only get a half foil and blow out which is like $80-90ish.

Please tell me how to deal with this? Last time I told him I do not want to hear his complaints anymore...this is life!

Edit - These prices I posted above inlcude tip amount.

honestly i think everyone is different...it all depends on how fast ur hair grows! i do think 170 is a little high - only because then to add a tip on top of it, it's then running u almost $200...however that being said, do you get multiple colors??? i know when i was getting 2 - 3 different shades of blonde put it , the cost was running me a lot higher! so then u'd really be about average. If it's just a cut, and single color foil it is a little high. As for how often, i really think 5-6 weeks is pretty average. Stylists will tell you every 8weeks...but if ur hair grows like a weed then obviously you're going to go more often! I've been growing out my hair & color(i almost have virgin hair now! lol) for a WHILE, but back when i was staying on top of it, i'd say i was going at LEAST every 6weeks... my hair just grows so fast & i'd have roots right away! Luckily i'm in LOVE with my stylist and she just so happens to be my cousin - so i get a fairly good price.

I'd tell ur dh that u ARE being fair by getting a partial every other time.... also, what about not getting a blowout when u go for the full??? that way maybe it'll be around the same cost each time & it'll hopefully make the hubster happy?? (((sigh)))..we're girls, and u have super curly hair! it takes taking care of! i think men would only truly 'get it' if we stopped taking care of ourselves! then they'd be like 'um..why does ur hair look like that??' lol.

I spend about $200 when I get a full head of highlights, a cut and a blow, plus tip I go about every 8-10 weeks - my hair grows fast and I have a lot of gray. . .and I hate it when my gray shows!

I need to find someplace cheaper I think, although it kills me not going to my colorist

Anyone have any really good recommendations for someone a bit cheaper?

you do have to mix the toner with the bleach, well its called standard lift, and i use 20 volume. You mix it together. My colorist told me how to do it when i need it in emergency situations

that's not just toning it then, that's bleaching it and adding tone at once. I didn't know you could do that. it probably is cheaper and easier than getting highlights every 6 weeks or so. but it's not what i was referring to - i'm taking about how my colorist tones my highlights after bleaching them - i like golden highlights not white, so my colorists adds color back in with toner after wards - leaves it on for like 5 mins ... and this procedure cannot change the color of roots or hair not highlighted, it only adds tone or color to bleached hair.

even in the salons though, i always get toner first. After i only get a glaze done and that stays on 5 mins, toner they leave on for 20-25 mins when i go to the salon. The glaze only changes highlighted hair. But like i said, even in the salon i always get toner no matter what and its done before. Are you sure they are not putting a glaze on afterwards?

and yeah i get it all from the beauty supply store and use same products as the ones the hair stylists use, they tell me what to get exactly. Its very inexpensive

I used to get this done. It was called a double process. They would lighten my roots with one color and then highlight/foil with blond. It wasnt called toner though...toner is what they use on your highlights when they are too light or too brassy.

My DH is crazy with my hair, I actually think he has some sort of sickness when it comes to my hair. He loves it, drives me crazy, constantly twirls it. He hates when I get a hair cut, he is always afraid I'll cut it too short or I'll die it (which is his worst fear). I spend about 70 dollars on a hair cut and I get one twice a year. I don't die my hair, so my hair is fairly inexpensive to keep up. However, I am a huge product junkie, I spend big bucks on shampoos and conditioners.

I have dark hair and used to get chunky highlights. I used have to get it done constantly and it is very expensive. Eventually I found someone to do it out of their house for much much less. Than after a while I just said screw it and went back to my natural. Its cheapier and is sooooo much less maintenance

haha I just have to say I am happy to have virgin hair. and DH is def happy. I couldn't imagine spending $150-$250 for my hair everytime I went to the salon...and having to go every 4-8 weeks

I never cut my hair. I always grow it out for a very long time before I cut it again. But my hair grows fast very fast...so I usually end up getting it cut once a year if that. I know I am horrible haha

I just got it cut for $40 and I love it but I will grow it out a little and then cut it in a few months again just to keep it up now that I realize how thin it is getting as I age

I can't help you with the highlighting thing. I don't even dye my hair anymore. I go 4x a year for a cut and it costs me $25. However, the last time I got highlights (a year ago), it was a single process with the CAP and she charged me $60. That included a haircut.

that's what i thought - i definitely get toned afterwards, not glazed. toner as i know it cannot change hair color unless it has JUST been highlighted.

toner isn't just one specific thing but a process. You can do toner to neutralize or lighten, theres two processes of toners. Toner can also be considered a semi-permanent dye.

Here is some info

There ARE color products that are called “toners” which are deposit-only colors and are designed to be translucent to allow the natural variation of the hair’s natural color to come through. Of course, there are color formulas that aren’t listed as “toners” that are also translucent formulas for the same reason. The multiple uses of terms like “toner” are one of the more confusing aspects of what we do. So, in short, almost any haircolor can be a toner if it is used in a two-process color service to give the final color result, these may or may not be considered “toners” based on their formulation. There are specific toner formulas designed to create a gentle shift in color results, such as adding a strawberry blonde tint to naturally blonde hair, or an auburn tone to a neutral brown shade, or to shift the color from a brassy shade to something more natural. These products may be used during the “toner stage” of a “two-process” color service.

The most effective product to use for toning hair is a semi-permanent hair color. They contain a nearly non-existent volume of peroxide (between 5 and 8 percent), so they're considered deposit only hair color products.
