This is a constant agrument with DH and its starting to wear on me. He thinks it costs too much and that I go to often and always complains about it. Everytime I have an appt, he is like 'oh didnt you just go' And last time he told me to die my hair back brown! I think he was dead serious too and I am so irritated about this.
Anyway I go every 5-6 weeks. Sometimes I will wait longer but it depends. My hair is very dark and my roots show fast.
Full foil, cut and blow out usually runs $160-170
Everything other time I only get a half foil and blow out which is like $80-90ish.
Please tell me how to deal with this? Last time I told him I do not want to hear his complaints anymore...this is life!
Edit - These prices I posted above inlcude tip amount.

My DH gets confused about me getting my hair done also. He goes to a barber and then complains that 15 dollars is too much for such a simple cut. lol.
For me - I don't really go too often. Probably every 4 months (about 3 or 4 times a year). I get it cut with high & low lights. Usually costs me about $90-$100.
Now that i'm in Colorado, I bet it's even cheaper tho. lol. Hopefully they do as good as my New York Salon did

my roots grow in pretty quickly too so have to go about every 6-8 weeks, although sometimes i will do just toner when i need it right away. Have you considered do that in between and getting highlights less often? the toner will completely lighten up your roots, when i do it, it looks like i dyed my hair and you can even put it completely over your hair and will lighten it all up. I even have to do it today. DH and i have things to do later so i dont want to spend hours in a salon so ill just do that.
I also have been getting it for free for many years, just give a tip. I had a friend of my mom whom she also worked with dye my hair for many years. SHe did the best job ive ever had, unfortunately she moved and i was so sad about that. She worked at good salons in the city and was very good with color, so i was happy about it. After she left i had this other guy who she worked with do it too and also this other lady. Sometimes i have tried other places, well dying only one other place where i paid for it, but got a cut there too and styled, thats when i needed something closer than the city.
but i really do suggest getting the toner done, it will cost you alot less, and you can still get highlights just less often. Its your roots that grow in, the rest of your hair wont change much right away and takes awhile for color to go away, so you can definitely wait longer.

I go probably about 4 times a year and it costs about $45, granted I only get my hair cut, not dyed.

Re: Getting your hair done...how often and how much?
I go every other month or so ... I pay $40 for a half head, $80 for a full. I do a full once a year or so, half the rest of the time. I just cut allllll of my hair off though so now I may have to go a bit more - since there's less blonde ... the roots will show more. With the hair cut it cost me $65 when I went the other day, plus $10 tip.
I was told toner only changes the color of highlighted hair - it will not change the color of dark roots - so that won't really do much to save $$ .... it will brighten up what is highlighted though (or darken it / make it golden or whatever you want it to do) so if you want to refresh the color after it oxidized, I guess it would work ...
Jenna, that sounds like a bit much to me - where do you go? I would never leave my girl though so I can't recommend leaving your regular girl ... :) But if you are in queens or NYC I guess they charge more. I go to a girl in bethpage, she is super cheap but super amazing.

I get my hair highlighted and cut about 2 or 3 times a year. I'm not sure of the exact cost but I think its between $150 - 200. I'm pretty lucky that I don't have to go so often - my hair is blonde to begin with, so when it grows in, it blends really well with my highlights.

no i do the toner all the time, and i do it just on the part where my roots are and there are no highlights left on it, only rarely will i do the toner on my whole head of hair. You do have to get the right color to match your hair and it blends it in. Even before they highlight my hair they ALWAYS do the toner first to lighten up my roots and then do the highlights, which i prefer bc ive had highlights done in the past without them doing the toner first and thats when your roots grow in ALOT faster too bc you are only getting highlights on some sections of your hair and thats why even when someone just gets it done, sometimes you still see on top a bit of darker hair not alot but still. One time i had somebody dye my hair and didnt do the toner first and i was so pissed off, if you have dark roots and putting highlights over that then its that dark hair vs blonde very streaky look and with small sections not getting dyed at all then of course that part will grow back even more and thats when roots will show even quicker. This way when i get my highlights done they always do the toner first so this way my roots are all lightened up and then when they do put highlights over its blonde over blonde highlights, and since my roots are ALL light it takes a little longer to grow back in. But again i use the toner on my roots only mostly and always does the trick, i am doing it today so i can show before and after pics . ACTUALLY the day of my wedding i had to do toner that morning, my roots were completely black and so bad too, i had let them grow in alot, and the night before i realized just how bad it was so in the morning before they came and did my hair i did the toner quickly and worked out. Im probably the only bride who forgot to dye her hair before the wedding lol, well i didnt have time
you do have to mix the toner with the bleach, well its called standard lift, and i use 20 volume. You mix it together. My colorist told me how to do it when i need it in emergency situations
Here are pics of wedding day after doing toner only, i wish i had before pics but my roots were so dark and so bad. Jen, they were like the pics you posted of your roots but maybe even worse lol, it lightens up your roots and also the highlighted part so all will show through.
and here you can see the top of my head, but just remember that morning before i did just the toner, they were very dark black and roots were probably 2inches or more hahaha
Re: Getting your hair done...how often and how much?
When my hair was long before the wedding, I would get a trim and hi/lows foiled and it would always come in around $85 - $100. It would be to the higher side if I let it go a long time - once I didn't get anything done in a 4 month period
I am now approaching 6 weeks since my chop and full on hair color. I have never had this before - always did foils so I'm not sure what its gonna run. My hair grows fast and I should schedule an appointment in the next week or two - don't think I can push the 8 week envelope with this. I am expecting it to be cheaper but who knows?

that's not just toning it then, that's bleaching it and adding tone at once. I didn't know you could do that. it probably is cheaper and easier than getting highlights every 6 weeks or so. but it's not what i was referring to - i'm taking about how my colorist tones my highlights after bleaching them - i like golden highlights not white, so my colorists adds color back in with toner after wards - leaves it on for like 5 mins ... and this procedure cannot change the color of roots or hair not highlighted, it only adds tone or color to bleached hair.

even in the salons though, i always get toner first. After i only get a glaze done and that stays on 5 mins, toner they leave on for 20-25 mins when i go to the salon. The glaze only changes highlighted hair. But like i said, even in the salon i always get toner no matter what and its done before. Are you sure they are not putting a glaze on afterwards?
and yeah i get it all from the beauty supply store and use same products as the ones the hair stylists use, they tell me what to get exactly. Its very inexpensive

I use went to beauty school and am still licensed. so i always had nice highlights and differnt colors done because it was FREE... once i stopped working at a salon i grew out my highlights and am now back to virgin hair and i have to say its the healthiest its been in YEARS!!!!! i was looking into getting it highlighted again for a change before i found out iwas pregnant and i couldnt believe my ears at the prices they were telling me. i cant even imagine spending 160 every 5-6 weeks! i spend $50 every 6-10 weeks for a cut and blow dry i tip the shampooer 5 an stylist 10-15

Re: Getting your hair done...how often and how much?
I go every 10 weeks for highlights, a color underneath (i guess a base color?) and toner. I pay $140 for the color.
If I get a hair cut too, it comes to $205, not including tip. I try to just get a hair cut 3X per year now (and go somewhere cheap for a trim in-between). When I just get color, I don't get a blow-out anymore. That saves a little money (I think i was paying 170 w/ the blowout (no cut). It kind of stinks leaving w/ wet hair, but at least i save a little $.
Recently, I tried just getting a 'mohawk' of highlights. It's a little less than the partial head, but it covers up all of m y roots-----and it only costs $60----big difference, right?
So, on Christmas eve, I had an appt for highlights. We live in Huntington. My hair place is in Bellmore. We were going upstate for Christmas, so i asked Dh to come w/ me to the salon so we could just leave from there. We pull into the parking lot, and he's like, 'How long is this gonna take? 15-20 minutes? He was so pissed when he found out how long i was going to be in there. (He knows i usually take a day off from work to get my hair done!)

yeah guys are always surprised to see how long it takes to get highlights lol. I remember once dh asking me what time i would be back and when i told him he was shocked. Honestly, thats why lately ive been doing the toner or sometimes doing base color myself, i go to the beauty supply store and buy what the colorists tells me to. I dont pay for it so thats not the issue for me, its the freaking time it takes lol. I can only do it on saturday's and didnt want to spend half my day at a salon, well i was out of work for a while so i was able to go during the week then but then sat's would be the one day dh and i have all day and didnt want to spend most of the day there, well daytime. When i go, i get my roots done first, sit with that for 25 mins, then wash that out, blow dry my hair, then highlights which takes a while, then glaze, cut and then blowdry again. I hate sitting there so long doing it lol. But its been a while and i need to get actual highlights instead of just basecolor now
in the past i used to always go every 6-8 weeks no matter what, its only been the past year where i'll do toner myself lol and ive gotten a bit too used to it.

Yes, I go through this every 4-6 weeks I get mine done. I try to stretch it out but I work in a career where I have to look professional and I visit clients a lot so I wouldn't be comfortable having the long dark roots. DH doesn't understand, he wants me to go back to my original dark brown color (which I did when we got engaged and hated every minute of it). I try to save in different areas so I kind of justify the expense but it certainly is expensive. I used to get it done in the city and I paid $300 every time I went. Now I pay about $150 which feels like a bargain to me but it really still adds up to alot money. I say as long as I'm working I'm getting my hair and nails done period.

Re: Getting your hair done...how often and how much?
I stopped highlighting my hair b/c the upkeep was kind of a PITA... I got my hair Japanese straightened, that'll be $$$$ but it's once a year. I have to start dyeing it b/c I have grays, but I can do that at home every six weeks.

Re: Getting your hair done...how often and how much?
I also go every 4-6 weeks, Jenn! People don't understand that blonde needs more upkeep. My roots would be horrible if i didn't. It costs me about $120 including tip for a partial ( I dont do full head anymore b/c i like the contrast and no one sees the bottom of my head anyway, lol)
As far as what Espo said, I do something similar. My hairdresser calls it 'budging the root' and it basically lifts my natural color one or two shades lighter ( i have light brown hair so it makes it a dark blonde) This is what makes my highlights look natural instead of blonde on brown. She calls it a 'toner' and she puts it on right after she takes the highlights out to lift the root.
If Im in between highlighting appointments or short on time, I do this and it only costs $30.
