Neither DH or I could transfer jobs so we would have to find something wherever we go. THe only downside is that I am an attorney and would have to take another bar exam.

i live in s. florida, and you can literally STEAL a beautiful home right now. short sales, foreclosures and even brand new homes are DIRT cheap. My friends and brother are even looking into buying one down here as an investment property/vacation home. You can even rent a sick 4 bedroom, 3/4 bath home brand new for $1500. The job market isnt the greatest, but i dont really think it is anywhere right now.

i had to move out of NY when I got married, but we plan to only be in Colorado about a year or two while DH finishes up school. But even tho I miss my family TERRIBLY, I still worry about coming back. I totally agree with you - LI is way too expensive. It's nearly impossible to live there, unless you're going to share a house with other family members
Out here, the economy definitely does not appear to be as bad as NY. It seems as though that's how it always is - things start over there and then it works it's way out west. So I'm sure it'll hit us eventually. But living here is so much cheaper and I don't think that'll EVER change. So i don't know.
As for where's a nice place to live... me & DH still definitely plan to move after he graduates. We don't wanna stay in Colorado (for personal reasons), but since I'm rethinking NY, we had considered South Carolina & Virgina. Both REALLY NICE places and easier living. But i DO wanna be closer to my family (who I'm sure will never leave NY). So now we're thinking Pa. I never wanted to live in Pennsylvania, but it might be worth it. We'll see.

I so want to move to FL, but wouldn't want to unless my parents agree to buy a home down there, and I don't think it's in their plans. I also want to finish school here but really see myself living there. I would first have to make sure I have a job before I make such a move.

I went to school upstate, in Philly and NJ and I couldn't wait to get home! I do want to retire to an island though. My uncle retired to Bonaire.

i love the fact short sales and foreclosures are still around 235K, only the 'gems' (insert sarcasm) are 185K.
I don't get it - you have a house that no one is living in so there is no electric, water, anything working inside and shut off. You have someone who is in default and can not pay so you as the bank should want to dump the house - right? NO you make people wait months and months and pay for a lawyer and contractor and then to get the offer rejected because you want all of your loan paid back. So now the house is falling apart and no one wants it so now it kills your neighborhood and the houses around it's value. FREAKING LI is really sucking big B.
I wish we could just get the hell out of here. I wish my husband and I would leave our damn apartment that is costing us 1,500 a month so we can buy something and pay for our own place not our landlords mortgage!

A friend of mine moved to San Antonio and kept trying to get me to move down. Now he's in Houston. I visited him in San Anton, its really nice there, i'm sure the whole foreclosure/economy blowout has hit there too, but as far as weather and nice neighborhoods it's great. There's also a lot of hospitals there, so if you or dh are in healthcare it could be good.

Yea I totally understand that. I am not even saying I want to move because of the economy in NY. I just will never be able to start my life here with how expensive it is. What I would pay in taxes to live on LI could be my MORTGAGE payment somewhere else!
I think starting out is hard everywhere because salary in other states match the lower living expenses in most cases. its very few jobs that make the same amount of money in NY and in other states. Like someone else said, a ny salary in another state would rock. I saw your post about the bar exam. yuck! That is the exact reason i really do not want to move.. in many case i too would need to retake the Social Work license/clinical exam. Definitely do not want too. plus my family is here. My friend moved to charlotte NC and loves it. She is in Ballyntane(sp?) which is one of the nicer areas but even thats affordable to our standards. there are other areas that are cheaper and nice too.

another issue with moving out of state is schools:my brother is waiting to move down south until his children are in the 7th grade because they have good resources in NY/LI whereas where they would move they do not have these programs. Things are changing where you have good teachers in many schools in certain states but its only certain states/cities/towns.

Good Luck. From what I read, NC and FL are really suffering from the economy and have higher unemployment rates that NY. If you really want to move, I'd wait until things start to level out again. I'd love to move but DH and I both work for LI companies so it's really not in our future. But when I think about moving I realize how much I love NY and Long Island. I love the change of seasons and the area. I don't know if I'd truly enjoy a new place.

Kristin..I totally agree I like the idea...but for me to much of who I am is NY...family,friends...I couldn't leave
