One of my MIL's tenants just moved out of their apartment. The apt. needs alot of work. DH's dad is in his early 60's and is a retired construction worker. Even though they have plenty of money to pay someone to fix up the apartment he insists on doing everything himself ( he always has and always will)
So last night my MIL called DH complaining that he should be over there to help!!! She made him feel really horrible about it
Now DH works in construction. Right now he works at night.. Leaves around 7:30 pm and gets home around 6 am He works 6 days a week sometimes 7
She expects him that when he wakes up around 1 he should come over by 2 and help his dad UNTIL HE LEAVES FOR WORK !?!?!?!?! Ummm when does he get to EAT, see his SON and WIFE, and even have a few miniutes to himself to RELAX!! He is going to get burned out!!!
That would also mean he is doing hard labor construction from 2pm - 5:30 am!!! almost every single day
Is she nuts or is it just me??!?!?!?!
Oh and if he has a day off he is more then happy to go over and help like he always does but he hasnt even had 1 day off yet. DH has an older brother who works days and lives at home still. Why dosen't she ever ask him?? Instead of running to his gf's house every night after work her can go pitch in and help his family... but no she bothers DH about it

For us (Americans) this is ludicrous. However, for Italians this is the norm. It's expected that the children will live, breath, and die by their parents needs.
My DH and I deal with this crazy crap with my MIL all the time. Except she plays the 'helpless' act. As in, without him, she just can't survive.
Why didn't anyone tell me this before i married and Italian??

Yes they are!! I know my FIL is getting older and it is not easy for him esp by himself in this heat but really they expect so much of my DH. He is torn... he either makes them happy and makes himself miserable and never even gets to see me or his son, Or he makes himself happy and he has them making him miserable. Hopefully they will be done soon and I wont have to hear about it anymore.

You are NOT nut - she IS! I could understand if helped out ONE day a week (NOT his day off either!!!) if he felt up to it, but she is certainly asking way too much.

she's being like a cheap dictator! you are def not nuts! whenever my MIL has a problem it's always, ALWAYS my hub she calls! it's SO irritating! my hub works all the time, too, but she doesn't give a sh1t. it's like she's queen or something. she needs to get off her high horse and down to reality. have you tried talking to your husband? sheesh.. it's a touchy subject w/o getting your mother pissy. g' luck.
