My friend is getting married over the summer and has not registered for much. I'd like to give her something a bit more creative than a blender anyway. My brother's girlfriend created a Newlywed Date Book for us with cute quotes and pictures, and gift cards to various restaurants / movies, etc. We have used it so often, so I was thinking of doing something like that, or creating a basket of stuff for a newlywed survival guide (cookbooks, perhaps a subscription to Real Simple magazine, note cards, stamps, wrapping paper...random things that you don't realize you need them until you need them....) But wondered if anyone had any ideas from your own shower, or stuff that could go into the basket?

Fh is cuban and since I am not...his aunt put together a 'Cuban' basket with cuban coffee, a tostonera maker (plantain maker), and various other cuban yummies. In addition, she made a cookbook with all of her favorite cuban recipes and labeled it 'Aunt Tere's Cuban Cooking 101' It was the best!

The big hit at my shower was the candle basket. I LOVE candles and when I read the poem, everyone there just loved it.

For my friend, I filled a basket with all the 'staples' she would need to fill her cabinets. Things that I had to keep running out to buy when I first moved into my own place, like: flour, sugar, spices, bullion, baking soda & powder, soy sauce, tomato paste, ect. It was a huge hit!

Actually a funny story ... I let DH register for a Palm Sander at Target. Well, my grandmother thought it was for me and gave it to me along with protective goggles she glue-gunned rosettes on and a homemade tool apron that she embroidered GIRL POWER on!!!!
The thought was awesome!!! :

I registered for a chips & dip bowl at Crate & Barrel and one of my friends bought that and then with it she put a can of mixed nuts, pretzels, bagel chips & some other type of chips and then put in dip mixes, salsa and a bean dip. Then she wrapped it all up in a sheer fabric...I thought it was clever. I'm all for theme gifts.

Re: Most creative shower gift?
One of my friends made this cute little basket filled with sayings about love and marriage and filled it with these 'mexican wedding cookies' with the recipe inside. It was a really cute presentation and i passed the basket of cookies around at the shower to share...there were some left and i took them home and DH tried them later that night and he had this horrid face on.... they tasted like playdoh. THey were salty and mushy..i felt so bad for anyone who ate them at the shower and even worse the next day when I told my MOH how they tasted and she said my friend ( who made them )asked her how they were, and she told her i said they were salty .Her Dh helped mix the ingredients and added salt instead of sugar and when they were cooked he tasted them and said they were fine...
Maybe not the best shower gift but it was most memorable

My SIL did a basket with all my baking pans and dishes and with each different pan size she attached a recipe to make using that specific pan.

Re: Most creative shower gift?
I made a basket for one of my friends that got married last summer. Her and her husband already lived together and didnt really nedd most typical 'registry' items. I got a bunch of gift certificates to their favorite kinds of resturants- for example I got a gift cert for sushi and put it with chopsticks and dipping dishes, I got a gift cert for ice cream shop and bought them oldfashioned ice cream bowls with a scooper and spoons, a blockbuster gift cert with cute popcprn bowls and popcorn and candy and stuff for movie nights, and a few more places. They really loved it and still use all the things that I got to go along with the actual gift certs.
