Who will you choose as your children's godmothers and why, for those that has already made the decision, tell me why you chose the people you did.

Re: NEWLYWEDS OR THOSE WHO ALREADY HAVE CHILDREN
I have very limited choices - for the catholic religion, you are supposed to pick people who are both catholic (I think you must, but not sure) and also the thinking is that these people will assist you in raising your children in the catholic faith. I think I have one couple, close friends of mine, that fit that description!

Re: NEWLYWEDS OR THOSE WHO ALREADY HAVE CHILDREN
Funny you should ask, my MOh asked me last night if she could be my future child's God mother.
My children will not have 'god parents' since I am not religious, but I will look into a ceremony that my officiant at my wedding does, it is a non religious cere mony, I guess like a baby naming ceremony, where you pick people that are pretty much the equilivant as god parents.
I ahve one brother and DH has a brother and sister. DH is a sponsor to both of his sis and brother's child. I would not want his sister, so we are stuck with two male sponsors. I am thinking about doing two couples, so that I can have both of them. My niece has three sponsors, DH, myself, and SIL's sister.

Re: NEWLYWEDS OR THOSE WHO ALREADY HAVE CHILDREN
This is easy since i'm an only child-the Godfather will be DH's brother and the Godmother will be my Aunt who is like a sister to me-she's only 5 yrs older than me.
no godparents for my children...but even the thought of thinking about a guardian scares me...
its official...I cannot have children!!!!
Why is this? what about friends and BP members etc, no one that you are close with you would want to take care of your child if you are no longer able to???
yes...but I couldn't imagine giving them all that responsibility...and if I named anyone but my sister...my mother would be hurt (just like my sister had to be MOH...when she shouldn't have been)
I guess the only people who would have to know is DH and me...and the couple we would choose...OMG I DON'T KNOW WHO!!! my BF who is single? our good friends who just had a baby...who live in Rockland...or good friends who live in Atlanta?
such a nice thread I have made so difficult for myself

When I told my mom there would be no christianing she suggested a 'coming out' party...

Actually, you can have one Catholic and one Christian Godparent. They don't have to both be Catholic to have Godparents in the Catholic religion. They also must be at least 16 years old. You cannot have someone who was a Catholic and converted to another religion as that is renouncing the Catholic Faith. The reasons are similar as to why you cannot have a Jewish Godparent as they believe something totally different than what Catholisicm teaches.
I honestly don't know who we would pick if David and I have children. I know I would like my brother and sister, but then David's sister would be 'left out'. *sigh*

I'm picking my SIL (brother's wife) and brother to be godparents. The choice was not easy because I really wanted only my brother as godfather (they have a very off again/on again relationship that is volitile). My brother has been there and done more for me than anyone ever has, even my husband. I didn't want hard feelings if I only picked him and not her. Their positions are totally figuritively because my sister is being named legal guardian if something happens because I don't think I would be comfortable having either my brother or his wife raise my child. It's a very sticky situation....No one is a consideration for either position on his families side.
Shamee, I do not get it, you say you want your brother to be godfather because he has done so much for you, but you donot feel comfortable having him raise your child.

Re: NEWLYWEDS OR THOSE WHO ALREADY HAVE CHILDREN
Since I didn't have my sister as my MOH, I had my BF, I told her that she would be the Godmother to my first child, which she was! The Godfather is Joe's cousin, who was our BM, and is like his brother since Joe is an only child.

Re: NEWLYWEDS OR THOSE WHO ALREADY HAVE CHILDREN
I do not view godparents as people who would take of care of my child if my husband and I pass. I see it as people who play a supportive role in the upbringing of a child. In addition, in my culture, a child get two male and female godparent.
For my daughter, we choose my bestfriend (MOH) and my SIL (first BM) as godmothers; and hubby's two cousins (BM and GM) as godfathers.
Shamma...wanted to let you know...that John and I had a long conversation about this...well at least guardianship...
and we still can't decide...There are so many if this than that...but he feels confident in my sister...(we both feel confident in his brother...but not his brothers wife...so thats out)...so if he thinks my sister would be a good choice...that probably is the best...

My 2 sisters for Godmothers and my brother for Godfather. I can't trust anyone like I can trust them to love my children as their own

Re: NEWLYWEDS OR THOSE WHO ALREADY HAVE CHILDREN
This is definitely a tough question. As for Godparents, I think we will probably choose my older brother and my DH's sister.
But as for legal guardians, I really do not know. That is going to be a tough discussion.

Re: NEWLYWEDS OR THOSE WHO ALREADY HAVE CHILDREN
I would and have chosen my Best Friend Tanya. She has and will always be the GodMother of my children inspite of anyone else that I may also choose. Consistency is most important to me because GodParents are the people who you trust the most with your children. Because I have 2 children and one on the way, it is very important that if anything ever happened to myself or my husband; that my children remain together. Me and my best friend have discussed this and I know that she would treat my babies as if they were here own. (She does this now)

Re: NEWLYWEDS OR THOSE WHO ALREADY HAVE CHILDREN
We will probably choose my sister and my brother as godparents for our first child.
For our second, my dh's best friend will be the godfather.
this topic has been constantly running through my head...
If you do not chose a family member to be guardian...will they make sure the children spend the holidays with their biological family?
my family and DH's family are split on different coasts...and in Europe...if we give custody to my family...how can I be assured that my MIL will be involved? I just somehow cannot imagine my sister being open to this...not out of spite...but out of her own busy schedule...
DH doesn't want to talk about it much b/c he says its morbid...

Re: NEWLYWEDS OR THOSE WHO ALREADY HAVE CHILDREN
We chose Nicky's godparents based on who would be the best role models for him. Unfortunately, there will be MANY hurt feelings when we start telling people who we chose. A lot of people who we could have chosen, who we love, don't share the same values as us, and we want Nicolas to be raised to have those values. His godmother will be named as his legal guardian in our will, if anything were ever to happen to Patrick and me.
I'm really nervous about announcing his godparents...

Re: NEWLYWEDS OR THOSE WHO ALREADY HAVE CHILDREN
I would chose my little cousin. Her mom is my god mother, I am hers and she will be mine.
I always went to my godmother as a teenager growing up,her daughter and I are really close also and I hope my daughter if I have one to be part of our little circle of love

Re: NEWLYWEDS OR THOSE WHO ALREADY HAVE CHILDREN
I will have a good friend be the godmother but I will have my MOH and her husband be the guardians to the child. Two seperate and different things!
