NYC ladies...what gym do you belong to?

I love my current gym, but I moved after the wedding and getting over there is a PITA.

I'm thinking that since DH doesn't want to join a gym, I might check out ones in the city - this way, I can go before or after work. Easy-peasy.

So, NYC ladies, which gyms do you belong to? What do you love about it? Do they offer classes? And if you don't mind, ballpark figures for memberships?

TIA!

Re: NYC ladies...what gym do you belong to?

I would recommend NYSC. The reason I don't belong there anymore is there are surprisingly none near me on the UES. They have great classes, reasonable rates (I think in the $80/month range if you don't have a corporate discount), relatively clean and just a normal gym.

I belong Crunch now but its good b/c its close to my apartment. I pay $81/month and it's gone up a few times (no more than $2 increase) over the last few years. I'm sure its cheaper to start now. I LOVE the classes there but they don't have enough on weekends or late nights. Its clean and nice though.

My DH goes to Boom Fitness at 34th and Park, if its conveninent to you, I highly recommend it. Its something like $20/month! Apparently they have great classes too---just not convenient for me.

Re: NYC ladies...what gym do you belong to?

Our building has a really nice (and free) gym so I quit NYSC but I was a member for like 7 years. Its no frills but I didn't want/need frills. I paid like 70-80 a month and they generally have a pretty extensive class schedule. If you get the passport you can work at any of their locations which is cool because there are some outposts on LI too...if you wanna go to weekend classes.

Re: NYC ladies...what gym do you belong to?

I LOVE my gym. I go to the NY Health & Raquet club in midtown since its a block away from my job.

The midtown location has a pool which I really love because I am a swimmer and get a great workout without damaging my knees (I cant run on treadmills or job because my knees start hurting). I also think the locker rooms are MUCH CLEANER and offer nicer shampoo/soap/conditioner in their shower stalls than other gyms. The Sauna and Steam rooms are very well maintained as well. I've never seen them dirty or out of service..

Its a bit pricey and I'm not sure what the price is per month/year since I get a corporate discount through my company, but all in all - it IS TOTALLY WORTH IT. Like NYSC, there are various locations throughout Manhattan and 1 in Great Neck (which I go to on weekends). You also have the benefit og using the NYHCR Yacht service in the summer (for $25/person you get a buffet lunch cruise as often as you want every summer on their yacht).

Re: NYC ladies...what gym do you belong to?

If you need to find another gym in Queens, I go to W Gym (used to be World Gym) on Woodhaven Blvd in Rego Park. I love it there. I always get a machine, it's so clean and it's a good mix of people there. The only down side is that parking a little tough sometimes when I go (6:00 right after work) but if you go a little later it's much easier.

Re: NYC ladies...what gym do you belong to?

i used to be a NYSC member, but also quit because my new building has a gym.

I didn't mind NYSC though - it had a ton of classes, was relatively clean, and much less than equinox.

also, there are so many locations, so whenever i was walking around and had to use the bathroom, i'd just go the nearest NYSC!

Re: NYC ladies...what gym do you belong to?

Thanks...I'll check these all out. Good call on paying the contract out in cash, Barb - that will probably help!
