NYPD / FDNY wives...

After reading Shannon's post and her DH going back to working nights... I thought of this...
Joe and I argue about who works the 'normal' hours every so often! He is a police officer and he swears that his argument is credible and I tell him over and over how it is so NOT! Everytime we argue, it usually stems from the fact that he works nights and I work days.. with his days off continually rotating. I swear he does it to get a rise out of me, but then other times I really think he believes himself! Doesn't help that many of our family and friends (including MY best friend) are either cops or firefighters... Ugghhh!

Re: NYPD / FDNY wives...

Tammy I was not sure what the question was either.
Mark very rarely works overnights now, usually 2 weeks days, 1 week 4-12 and the last week days again with Sun & Mon off. It's not too bad at all. I actually like the weeks at night I am home alone, I get a lot of stuff done. But I definetly wouldn't want it all the time. I remember the nights with the rotating days off. It ****##

Re: NYPD / FDNY wives...

So sorry - I guess I was just ranting and raving!
Question is: Does your DH thinks HIS hours are 'normal' hours?
Joe works 4-12 everynight (which I don't mind at all with the exception when I don't get to see him for 5 days straight which happens when he works Mon- Fri. So we tend to argue a bit more during that time that he has that rotation. And when I bring up to him that it's because of his hours, so in return says to me, 'Well, who says 9-5, Mon - Fri are 'normal' hours?' Oh he kills me sometimes! Liz - Is Mark in a special unit? I hear that if you are in a special unit, that your hours are likes his (change every other week). I wouldn't mind so much if Joe worked 4-12 every other week. At least then I would know that the following week I owuld get to spend with him!

Re: NYPD / FDNY wives...

now I get it lol
he said I have it easy but he doesnt think his are normal
he works 4-12
then 12-8 and some days

he said its hard and if he worked the 12-8 everyday it would be easier than once or twice a week but I dont think he views it as normal

Re: NYPD / FDNY wives...

kmcwed - they work the same hours i am sure...
i have to say that i have gotten to like my time to myself, but there are plenty of times that it does get under my skin and for the very same reasons! if it weren't for us buying the house and him having so much to do, he would be sleeping his days away as he did in our old apt. i couldn't stand it! i know exactly what you mean... i remember feeling like telling him to 'get off your butt and do something!' uuugghhh... i give u credit for staying up with him. i can't do it! i am sleeping every night that he comes home. he kisses me goodnight and goes downstairs and watches tv til some ungodly hour!
and yes jamie - i too feel that it is MUCH easier to do things in the am, than after working all day. i think for me at least that i have more energy before going into work, as opposed to afterwards when i am tired and hungry!

Re: NYPD / FDNY wives...

My DH is a fireman...I WISH I had his hours. Although they aren't 'normal'...they are great, he's home a lot!

He used to be a cop before this and I didn't like his hours....he worked 4-12's and I work 9-5, so we only saw each other in the middle of the night and on his days off. Other than the fact that we didn't see each other often, he didn't mind it, I hated it!

Re: NYPD / FDNY wives...

Branching out into a complete different subject.... I wonder if cops wives are more likely to have an affair??

I ask this because my DH has several friends, all cops, and all of their wives had affairs. I've also heard of other situations, too. Do you think it's because of the loneliness????

Just curious...

Re: NYPD / FDNY wives...

could be! good point. but i think it also takes a certain personality and strength to be the wife of an officer / firefighter. and unfortunately some people don't realize they aren't cut out for it til they are knee deep... and bail by having affairs. i've been with joe since the start of his career and i'll be the first to tell you that is hasn't been easy at all.. but u do get used to it...

Re: NYPD / FDNY wives...

yes, right now he is in a special unit, but he is trying for other units as well. It is the nature of the beast when you marry a cop. You never know what the hours may end up being. Hopefully the further along they get and the more senority, maybe they will be able to get better, steady hours. Although I like the time alone to get things done, if it is consistent hours 4-12 or 12-8, it does start to bother me.

Kelly, my friends DH is a fireman and she loves the hours as well. I also wish I had those hours. It's too bad offices don't offer those hours.

Re: NYPD / FDNY wives...

wouldn't it be sweet if they did offer those hours. they all deserve it. they work to hard for so little.. the least they could do is grant liek hours so they could spend time with their families! let me not get into requesting a popular weekend off when it's not on their rotation! man - they deserve so much more.
