It's a book club! And the above ladies are in! We are thinking like book a month, maybe we can each take turns picking once a month, and then we'll have a posting week on it - and we are hoping for a 'book club tab' courtesy of liweddings!!!

Anybody else interested or have any input on how it should work?

Re: okay readers who is in?

i read pretty much everything. i read tons of women's fiction, general fiction, lots of children's literature, non-fiction...you name it. so I am flexible. And eager to read different types of books that I might not pick up without a referral.

I think the discussion could just be like a tag from liweddings saying - book club discussion on such and such date, and we could all just post our reviews/questions/ideas, etc. Maybe the 'chooser' of the book could start the first post?

I think since it might be often that at least one person read a book that is chosen, that person would just skip that month.

I think discussing it on one post would be fine, since that's what we do with many other topics. Maybe we can compile a list of questions that we'd like to discuss towards the end.

I think the live chat will go too fast, unless we have it very structured. For example, if someone 'raises their hand' with an ! to 'speak' and we take turns that way. I still think the discussion board will allow us to post at times that are most convenient to each of us.

it's pulling together! makes perfect sense...if you read it before, you can post anyway! (sometimes it amazes me how dense I am)

I agree that a posting works best. this way you can write in whenever is good for you

I like the post idea, but am also willing to set aside time to meet ... I like the once every-other month plan. Maybe we could do both! Anyone who's available on the chosen date could meet & discuss in person as well as participating online.

Re: okay readers who is in?

I love the idea of meeting every now and again...but we all know how hard that can be. But maybe if we do it once every few months for a certain book...I think we should start the first one on-line and then try for a GTG on the second one. Maybe we could GTG in the city at a nice quiet place for drinks or something.

The live chat on this board stinks unfortunately. I think it will be too hard that way!

Meeting is not possible for all, Natasha lives in MD and I know Lisat would love to do this, but she is in California, so we have to keep it to a thread

i agree shamma. maybe that can be just a fun thing to do additionally for the locals!

So when do we start, we have to give people time to get the book and then post the start date and the date we will discuss. I am so excited

How about we get a list going of books that people would like to discuss then we can vote on them and ...say the top 4 get in the first round of the book club. Ive never been a part of a book club and I know people read at different speeds, How long are you normally given to read the book then discuss?

Re: okay readers who is in?

how about we make the start date just immediately. we can assume that everybody can get the book over the weekend. so a start date of next week and a post date...ugh - see I read a book in like 3 days and I know it's not standard. I get really compulsive. My girlfriend reads them over like a three week period. Maybe once a month is perfect. So a post date of right around Valentines day? Is that too far off?

Re: okay readers who is in?

That sounds quite fine by me

Count me in too, I love to read.

Although, I may have to cut down my liweddings surfing to keep up with our due dates!!

Feb 14th post date sounds good to me.
I just realized that I may have a problem, since my local library ****s (in Queens) and I won't be surprised if they don't have the book I'm looking for for. I'm trying to save money and not buy books. I'll do my best to find them somewhere.

Re: okay readers who is in?

Of course I am in. I am currently reading Raising Fences and it is great. It is not for those who perfer light-hearted reading though. Not saying this has to the book, but I am throwing out the suggestion.
Raising Fences
From Publishers Weekly
Much like Mark Matousek's acclaimed memoir, Sex Death Enlightenment, Datcher's debut confronts the psychosocial damage caused by fatherlessness. In this case, the paternal absence is compounded by abandonment by Datcher's mother. A former editor-in-chief at Image magazine, and now a successful poet and writer, the author spent part of his childhood in Long Beach, Calif., obsessed with the idea of becoming a husband and father, but determined not to become an absentee dad like many of the men in his African-American community. As a young boy, he idolized his adoptive mother, who acted as an emotional anchor for him during the turbulent years of his adolescence in the 1970s. (She had been handpicked to raise him by Datcher's biological mother, who had been raped at age 16.) Datcher's voice in this heartfelt confessional alternates between that of a truly bewildered young man desperately seeking a male role model and a hip, cocksure guy. Emotionally withdrawn and suffering from a stutter, Datcher seeks to find his way by running with a group of other lost souls, briefly stumbling into petty crime that leads to arrest and being terrorized by police. Later, he becomes romantically involved with a young Dominican woman, though complications soon develop that threaten to cast him into the role of absentee father that he has so long resisted. Deeply reflective, occasionally offbeat and tearful, Datcher's memoir combines attitude, honesty and romance in a way that should appeal to both men and women. This triumphant tale is a stunning tribute to perseverance, courage and the power of positive thinking. (Mar.)Forecast: Datcher's story taps into a raw nerve in the black community, and his vibrant, down-to-earth voice should, with the help of a national media tour and radio satellite tour, attract a strong following.

Here are some other ideas:

Lovely Bones
(You will cry yourself to sleep reading this book but it is soooooo worth every tear!)

Life of Pi

Editted to say: I think we need to give people at least 4-6 weeks to read the book. with work and all of our schedules I know some girls will need longer than others. Say we start on 1/15 and discuss on 2/28. That gives people time to order the book from Amazon or half.com too- which is a lot cheaper than the local bookstore (normally). We can also try to get book club questions on the books and formulate our own. I know I like to have a few days to think about a book before discussing it.

Hey Jenny, can we post on the 13th! I won't be around on the 14th (it's my birthday ) and I don't want to miss our first posting thread!
I want to read Lovely Bones ... that has my vote!

Re: okay readers who is in?

Should we try to pick books that the library might have? Some people might not want to buy every book that is suggested.

The Lovely Bones is a good one to review...I read it and thought it was excellent.
