It's a book club! And the above ladies are in! We are thinking like book a month, maybe we can each take turns picking once a month, and then we'll have a posting week on it - and we are hoping for a 'book club tab' courtesy of liweddings!!!

Anybody else interested or have any input on how it should work?

Re: okay readers who is in?

This was quite a source of discussion on another board and created an informal book club.

Topping From Below

Just a suggestion.

Im reading Memoirs of a Geisha now (thanks Michele) and am definitely planning on reading The Lovely Bones.

Ooh Stefanie-- Memoirs of a Geisha was a very good. That book took me another world. How are you enjoying it?

Im about half way thru and its been good story thus far. Although Im not crazy about the writers style. Nearly 20% of the paragraphs start off, 'although I didnt know it at the time..'

I agree with Mrs2be that we should try to get books that may be available in a local library. Buying books can be quite expensive for those on a tight budget. Due to my budgetary constraints, I have been making use of my local library.

Re: okay readers who is in?

Here is a book I just started, I love this author

Editorial Reviews
From Publishers Weekly
The friendship between a black woman and a new immigrant in 1940s California sets in motion events that span two generations in Campbell's (Singing in the Comeback Choir) densely plotted new novel. Hosanna Clark, a maid at an elegant Los Angeles hotel, befriends her new white co-worker Gilda Rosenstein, a Holocaust survivor whose family had owned a cosmetics factory. When Hosanna tries a special lotion Gilda has made, she persuades Gilda to produce it for Hosanna to sell to local black women. They are very successful, and at Gilda's suggestion they open a joint bank account. Not long after, Gilda and her new husband disappear with all their profits. Daughter Matriece, a witness to Hosanna's struggle to survive on her own, resolves to achieve the success her mother never had; she eventually becomes a division president in Gilda's cosmetics empire. Ignorant of Matriece's identity, Gilda mentors the young woman, with whom she feels an unexplained bond. Gilda's reaction, when she finally learns the truth, is unexpected, and she startles everyone with a surprising proposal that brings the story to a neat conclusion. Numerous subplots crowd the novel, covering issues from reparations and education to romance and betrayal. Campbell's detailed treatment of each accounts for the book's length, but all are credibly tied to the central tale. Character portraits are sometimes shallow, and the story's length tests the reader's stamina, but those with the patience to follow its intricate, entwined relationships will find the novel rewarding. (Aug. 6)Forecast: This wide-ranging effort is most reminiscent of Campbell's 1994 Brothers and Sisters and is positioned to perform just as strongly. First serial went to Essence magazine, and the book has been chosen as a main selection of the Black Expression Book Club and as an alternate selection of BOMC, the Literary Guild, Doubleday Book Club and QPB. A major ad/promo campaign and a 27-city author tour will cover all conceivable bases.

Re: okay readers who is in?

I agree, my library card has not been used in a while so I say go for books that has been out for a little while, so those who do not want to buy can borrow.

I vote on what you owe me. I read it before, but would read it again for the discussion this book would raise.

The library is a great resource but I can almost predict that many of us will not find new release hot topic book club books on the shelf. We can try to pick something for a few years ago if that would be easier. I agree buying books is expensive that is why I trade with friends all the time.

Re: okay readers who is in?

I'm definitely in, but I already read The Lovely Bones. It was amazing, so if you all want to read it I'll sit out this month.

JenRenee, just because you read it doesn't mean you can't participate in the discussion.

Besides, maybe we can post a book for next month for those who already read Lovely Bones so they can get a jump start?

I already read The Lovely Bones as well, but I'd definitely wouldn't mind chatting about it. I thought it was a touching book...

Re: okay readers who is in?

I just finished reading The Lovely Bones about a week ago and I really enjoyed it! Although I have to tell you that for 2 nights after I finished it, I was afraid to fall asleep because I thought I was going to not wake up!!! My overactive mind always at work!!!

I'm usually the sappy romance type myself, ya know, Nora Roberts, etc. -- but NO HARLEQUIN!!!

I just might join in every now and then!
