Re: People living above you
No clue, but I have a very funny story about Junior (our schitzophrenic neighbor who lives above us)! After changing his meds, he had his one and only pyschotic episode in the 6 years that Brian has livied underneath him. In matter of 10 hours, we were flooded out because Jesus told him to runthe bathtub after plugging it up, we heard him call out Brians name for 3 hours (it eventually souned like CRYIN), we had oranges and an assortment of fruit thrown onto our front lawn along with framed pics of Jesus and Mary, and we saw him running around in his undies with a rainbow belt wrapped around his bbobs while he screamed how the chinese took down the trade center in his Jamaican accent! IIt was quite the night until the cops came to take him away

its a three family house. the first few times, the woman was understanding. now dh said she wasn't all that friendly. now she didn't see the big deal. when we come home, we just want to relax

If it's during normal hours, I honestly don't see the big deal. It's a kid. It's not like the parents are making noise and can easily stop. When we have kids, and people give us dirty looks because ours kids won't stop making noise, we'll know how it feels.

So rude!!! THe lady could just put a rug down or do something to contain the noise but her response indicates she simply doesn't give a fig. If your chandelier is shaking that's excessive IMHO. And that might be 'legal' but its not 'civil'. You have every right to expect a level of peace and quiet after a day at work!! Can your landlord speak to her if she wont cooperate?

I can see what you're saying Jenn, but have you experienced this? It's extremely disturbing, annoying, disruptive, etc etc etc. For example, we moved into our new place when we got married, but had the apartment one month prior to get it ready. The first week when we were just starting to paint and whatnot, our neighbors downstairs started with their super loud and banging music. Great huh? Well, after we moved in, we realized right away that there is a small child in the apartment UPstairs and the baby cries so much and so loud that he/she would wake us up at 3am everyday! And during the day the baby runs around a bit, and just NON STOP cries - VERY LOUDLY and for very long periods of time. Now, DH and I have complained about our downstairs neighbors because the music thing is just ridiculous - our floor vibrates from their music. But we haven't complained about the child upstairs because we figure the nonstop crying isn't really something they can just stop, but if that baby starts running around or jumping around enough to shake chandeliers, you better believe we would complain. When you have neighbors downstairs from you, you have to be respectful of them - like we have a dog and I refrain from throwing her toys for her to fetch because we have hardwood floors and don't want the neighbors downstairs to complain etc. It's hard for us because a dog by nature needs to play and have movement in their own home, but we know we have neighbors downstairs from us so we have to keep that in mind.
With the OP's upstairs neighbors, they CAN try to have their child run less in the home or jump around etc., or put down carpet with padding to help with the noise and rattling etc. Children are children, and you can't just have them sit still all day, but there is a point when it becomes excessive and very disruptive. People who pay to live in their homes deserve to be at peace when they're home!

no offense, but BABIES CRY... that's what they do. Its just part of living in an apartment. If you want complete peace and quiet, live in a house. its a compromise... (please dont take this as me being condescending b/c thats NOT where I am coming from AT ALL)
now, if it were something controllable like loud music etc etc... another story.
Myself, I'm pretty conscientious about other people so I TRY to keep my son in check... I have carpet in our bedrooms and I try to keep the jumping to a minimum and NEVER after a certain time (myself & hubby included)
my husband is a DJ and he likes to spin records to relax.... the rule is during the week, HEADPHONES ONLY... in fact. hes out there spinning right now.
unfortunately, with children, you just have to deal... during normal hours of course/
to the OP, I'm sure you'll get used to it... it depends on what time the child is making noise, but in my HONEST opinion, I dont think you should say anything unless its something like in the middle of the night.

I have unfortunately. When I lived at home my Dad's gf's son would play his music right below my bed tot he point where I had things fall in ym room. The difference with him was he was 18 and just trying to annoy everyone. But she also has two very young children who would wake the entire house with the screaming and crying. At first my sister and I tried fighting it, but after a while, we realized they're kids and are going to do it and we just can't stop it. We learned to live through it. As far as the OPer, if it were early in the morning or late at night, then I'd be PO'ed. But if it's 5 or 6pm, that's just life. It's what happens when you live in an apartment. My current landlords have a nephew that runs circles around their dining room table. It's something we deal with because for now we have to live in an apartment.

See, your son probably doesn't run around like crazy and rattle your downstairs neighbors chandeliers. This is a quality of life issue and it is valid and can be complained about - now, not if it's regular children stuff, but excessive running or jumping etc... You definitely can't expect or request/demand that a child not do anything, but there's a point where it's too much and some parents really don't try to control their child/ren at all. Many, of course, DO, but I've seen how some parents just let their kids do whatever they please with no regard for their surroundings or people around them. I am DEFINITELY not saying this is the case with all parents (or you, obviously), but when a child is actively and consistently disturbing neighbors, the neighbors have a right to complain.
I guess I feel so strongly about this because I've lived through it in the past and it's SOOOOO disruptive and really affects how you FEEL on a daily basis. It really starts to affect you more and more. Especially when I had asked nicely and they take NO measure at all to ameliorate the issue.

Ive had my neighbors come up and complain a number of times... there have been a few times where I didnt realize how late it was (he was off school) and by ALL MEANS, I apologized and kept him quiet... but there WERE times where he wasn't being anymore than a kid who likes to jump up and down while playing gamecube at 7pm... they tend to be a little an*l... and those times, unreasonable, but we respected them just the same.
But I just chalk it up to this is what yoiu have to deal with in a building.
the old couple above me make noise ALL NIGHT... it doesnt bother us b/c we're used to it.
but I do understand where you are coming from... I guess I'm more immuned to noise... haha

No offense taken, but I'm not sure if you got my point... I was trying to point out that we currently have a child that cries alllllll day long, very loudly, and that I have NOT complained about that because I know there's really nothing you can do about that. We understand that and know that we have to live with certain things, fine. But the OP's issue is completely different. Of course when you live in an apartment you have to deal with different issues etc., but people do still need to be respectful of each other. Thankfully for us, the child upstairs from us isn't putting us through what the OP is going through (at least, not yet , lol).

Personally, I think loud banging music would be more annoying that someone running around. (Which is why I make DH wear his HEADPHONES!!!)

I think it's awesome that your DH wears headphones - maybe I should drop off a pair to my downstairs neighbors??? They play their music SO LOUD allllll the time - the problem is really the BASE, our floors vibrate and all I hear is boom boom boom Hmmm, maybe I can leave a set of headphones from 'santa' on their doorknob?
