Please tell me it will get better!!!

It's my third day at my new job and NO ONE has shown me how to do anything. I have asked, can I help you with something? Is there anything I can do? And everyone says, not right now ... My boss is working from home today too - so he can't help. They are busy, I know - but come on! Why hire someone if you cannot even show them how to help you?

To top it off, I must be in the middle of my cycle because I am VERY irritable - well I was a few days ago .. lately I've just been emotional and sad about this situation and it's BAD because I know I should not be getting upset about it, especially AT work.

$$ was starting to get tight too, so I *really* need this, but the way things are going, I cannot see myself still here in a month. I mean, I know they will not let me sit here and do nothing for a *month* but when is this gonna change????

I am sure that they need you, it is just they need to figure out a better way to get you trained.

Jenn what are you 'supposed' to be doing in your job description? Is there anyone that you can sit next to and just take notes as they do work.

I am supposed to be putting together proposals - but I can't do that unless someone shows me how! And I don't want to keep asking people if they need help - I don't want to be a pain in the arse, you know?

The art director is the only person who has tried to give me things to do. She gave me a brochure she is working on to read, and some old ads to read to see if I can come up with better ad copy. So it's something, but not much.

I guess I will ask the other people in my dept. again in a little bit if they need help, or if there is something they are doing that I can watch -- but soon I will sound like a broken record, you know?

That's a great suggestion. What exactly are you supposed to be doing based on your job description? Do you have an understand of the industry you're working in?

TRYING to read things to get an understanding, but it's kinda confusing. Engineering and architecture is not something you pick up easily, without explanation from people.

Ok, take a deep breath - IT WILL GET BETTER

I totally know how you feel. Being the new person and not knowing anything. BUT at least you arent thrown right into it, you know? It could be worse and people could be asking things of you right from the start and it could be chaos. So think of it like that - this is just a transistion period.

OK are their old proposals you can look over to get an idea? What are the proposals for? Is there someone who was doing the proposals for the time being before they hired you? How many people are in the office?

you will get more to do, maybe there isn't a proposal that needs to be done yet? ask you boss tomorrow when he comes back, maybe he doesn't realize whats going on! hang in there the first couple of weeks are always the hardest!

Theres always that awkward feeling at a new job where people dont know quite what to do with you and you dont know what to do with yourself. But it will all fall into place for sure! Dont worry. The awkward phase will pass

ITA. See if you can shadow someone and know that this is what it's like the first few days even weeks sometimes.

At first when I started this job I was bored and now I'm consistently busy and starting to get swamped. It took 2 months to get to this point.

Def. keep asking if you can help, at some point someone will say yes.

I completely understand what you mean. My first job was dealing with home builders and I had no clue what anything was. Then I moved into pro audio! Then pharmaceuticals. My head would spin! Can you just call people you've read about in articles and just say you're a student doing research and saw the article on them and wanted to know if you could talk to them and just tell them you're not the engineer so to dumb down what they're saying. It WILL come to you!

I am looking terms up on wikipedia and the things I am reading are making NO sense to me, and then my mind wanders ... and then I re-read what I just read and it still makes no sense. Like does this make sense to anyone???

stick it out - when they have time to show you the ropes it might get better....it was like that when i first started my job too and now its not bad at all and i am always busy (or at least should be!)
