My MIL is super-cool. She started signing cards to me, 'Love, Mom' so I started calling her that. She also says 'I luv u' before she gets off the phone w/ me. I really lucked out!

His parents are divorced-his dad is remarried and his mom is engaged so we call his dad: Dad & Margaret (his stepmom) and Mom & John (her fiance) So I guess we kinda do.

I voted Other - they sign their cards Mom and Dad and I will address my cards to mom and dad. . .
but I can't call them that yet - I don't think its chickening out, so much as - they aren't my mom and dad.. . i dont know.

Re: POLL: do you call MIL & FIL 'mom' and 'dad'
I do sometimes, but it's strange. They like to be called Mommy and Daddy (DH and SIL call them that) but I can't call them Mommy and Daddy. It just doesn't seem right to me. Don't get me wrong, they call me on the phone and say It's Mommy or Daddy and they call me their daughter but every time I say Mommy or Daddy I think of my parents. Even my SIL calls and says it's sis. That I could do without a problem. My mom and grandma always called there in-laws 'Pop and Ma or Mama'. That I like and I can do but they don't like it. So they will have to live with getting called Mommy and Daddy in cards and Susan and Frank when I talk to them. DH don't call my mom and dad, mom and dad either. I think it's just to new. I don't know....

Me too. DH's mom died a long time ago, and I've called his Dad by his first name since I met him. My dad passed away very recently. I could NEVER call anyone else Daddy. Never. And DH's dad would probably find it odd if I called him by anything other than his name. DH has always called my mom by her first name, and still does.

I have no problem calling my FIL mom and dad... they don't want me to though FIL pulls me aside at the wedding and was like please don't ever call us mom or dad! So... I just call them by their first names.

Nope. I actually dont call them anything at all. They want me to call them mom and dad but I just cant do it. Especially since I dont think too highly of them. I feel I have one more and one dad....thats it. I love them...but I just cant. DH calls my mom mom and she feels weird about it.

i agree. and i actually call fmil mrs ___ because that's how she was introduced to me originally when we were just friends so that's what she always will be to me and she's a lot older than my parents so i dont feel as 'respectful' to be like oh hey mary what's up...u know? ill feel better when i can just refer to her as 'grandma' cuz i call my gma a special polish name.

No we get along very well, they are just eccentric.... DH doesn't want to call my parents mom and dad either. He feels that 'mom and dad' is reserved for only 2 people on this planet... Oh well, I guess he gets it from his parents

I do the same thing - I write cards and emails to Mom and Dad -- they live in FL so I don't see them much, just 1-2x a year... in person, I don't call them anything. I just wait til they are in front of me or looking at me if I have to ask them something!!! I am ok with the IDEA of calling them mom and dad - no, they aren't my mom and dad but I know that and I'm ok with calling them that - it doesn't take away from the fact that I still have a mom and dad ... but I just think it's awkward. I haven't ever called them anything! Calling them by their first names is even stranger to me, though, so Mom and Dad will probably come faster than Gayle and George. I still think of them as my 'elders' in a way and honestly, 'Mrs. and Mr. Booth' is the most natural thing, but that's really weird!

Re: POLL: do you call MIL & FIL 'mom' and 'dad'
I definitely don't. My sister in law actually calls my parents mom and dad and I hate it!! Obviously every family is different.. so no offense to anyone who does this.. I just personally don't like it.
