Questions for girls who run/excercise hard cardio wise

Questions for you ladies who run/excercise hard enough to 'glow' (sweat):

1. If you're a runner, how long did it take for you to build up to running more than a mile? What is considered an acceptable speed?

It sounds silly but I want to build up my endurance but i have never been athletic nor excercised much before I got engaged. I was always pretty naturally thin so I didn't need to. But now obviously I need too and I like what running does to my booty! I can't do it everyday because my knees don't like it but I aim for 2x a week and then taking spinning the rest of the week.

Right now I can manage about a 20 minute run at 6.0 mph on the treadmill. I do a 5 min warmup and a 5 min cool down as well. I want to build up but I don't know what a realistic goal would be to reach for so I am reaching out to my athletic gals like SumemrsBride who I know runs 5 mile stints I want to be like you!

2. For all of you who excercise hard enough to break a good sweat, do you ever get an itch from it? And if you do, what do you do to handle it?

Sounds weird I know but when I start to sweat and my internal core temperature rises, I get this CRAZY bad itchy feeling-likea burninng and the areas get really hot and red. I get it between my boobs, lower back, thighs, behind my knees. Anywhere where it really gets heated. As soon as I cool down, it goes away. Its REALLY WEIRD. My mom and my aunt have it happen to them too. So I was wondering if it happens to anyone else and how they handle it. Like I could probably do a 30 minute run but by 15 minutes Im starting to get the itchies.Happens when I do anything that makes me sweat hard; biking, hiking, etc.

I do wear the special microfiber gym clothes that whisk away sweat and those seem to help but any other ideas? That stuff is sooo expensive!

hmm....not sure about the sweating issue - but i can KINDA help with the cardio. For one, if the treadmill is hard on ur knees, switch up the spinning with the eliptical machine....it's actually really GOOD for the knees and totally blasts calories and is GREAT for the booty & legs!
The best thing to do to build up ur cardio training is speed intervals & inclines... so if ur doing 20 minutes on the treadmill divy it up. 5minutes running, then 5minutes at a really fast pace powerwalk on a high incline, then back to running, and so on. The incline intervals along with fast/slower paces MAJORLY trains ur heart muscles. and this goes the same for machines..... my basic cardio routine is

Treadmill: 5minutes FAST powerwalk on a high incline, 5minutes running(no incline or very low incline), 5minutes powerwalk on incline again(and oh MAN will those inclines work ur booty!) - 15minutes all together...

Eliptical: 15minutes

Bike: 10minutes

total cardio workout: 40minutes

Any trainer will tell u that by circuit training with different machines and varying the times, inclines & speeds, u prevent ur system from plateau-ing & keep ur heartrate challenged.. hope this helps! it works for me!

Thanks Taryn! This might work better for me actually because my bigegst issue aside from the sweaty itch rash is getting bored. I HaTE not going anywhere lol. You run for miles and where did you go? NOWHERE! Thats why I prefer biking outside and hiking in the reservation by our apartment.

So the incline isn't bad for your knees? Some docs say it is, others say its not so I am always unsure. What speed do you power walk at? Sorry if its nosey! I just like to have reference points cause I seriously am new to the whole gym lifestyle and dont wnat to push it too hard and then faze out.

ps: if i'm REALLY feeling up for it, I'll do the rotating staircase....not sure if ur gym has it, but most NYSC's do (it's the machine that looks like moving stairs)....HOLY SH*T is that hard!!! when ur done with cardio routine(or even cut it a little short), leave the last 5-10minutes for that sh*t..... u will be put to the test and ur booty/legs will KILL the next day! lol.

I actually have a friend who is basically allergic to her own sweat. It suckwed for her because we are dancers and every class she would get huge red patches and welts. She went to the doc and got meds for it. Maybe you have the same thing?

i think if u RUN on a high incline it would be bad for ur knees.....but my knees are pretty bad - and when i powerwalk with the long strides on the incline they really don't bother me....as for my speed....hmm....it's been a WHILE since i've been to the gym....i wish i knew! i normally set it to the point right before it feels like it would turn into a jog...so it's a pretty fast pace but slow enough to really walk and tred the incline....if that makes sense???

oh god - i have everything from rock, country, alternative, acoustic, and even showtunes! lol. I do find that if i stick to one album the time passes a lot quicker than if it's on a random shuffle...i dont know why that is - but it works! i'll set my i-pod to play a whole album, and by the time the albums done u dont realize how much time has flown by.. it also lets u anticipate the songs that are coming up...so maybe that's why???

Really? I think thats what I have. Its CRAZY. Thats exactly what happens to me. I get HUGE red patches and itches like a mosquito bite till I cool down- Usually in 5-10 minutes. As soon as I cool, I feel fine and the welts go away. Do you know if she went to a regular doc or a an allergist?

LMAO I need to steal your playlist. I have alot of sings but I get bored. I liek to amke specific lists cause the shuffle doesnt work well for me since I am so eccletic with what I like.

what are some of the songs that really pump you up? I am always looking for new music and unfortunately I SUCK at knowing names of musicians and song titles.

Thanks Now to find someone covered under my insurance. SUCH A PAIN to find good doctors.

Its AWFUL. And frustrating because I am so proud of myself when I push it and I get annoyed that I cant push it harder simply because of a weird allergy.

ps: i edited my above post about the speed - not sure if u caught it.....when ur power walking, go to the point where u feel like ur almost gonna jog....so it's a fast walking pace, but slow enough where u feel like ur really treading the incline....the more u feel ur treading, the more ur booty's workin'!

I am going to try that one. I have a lot of Linkin Park on my runnign playlists and Prodigy. I liek firestarter because its fats and long so you go for almost 5 minutes. Holding out for a Hero is good liek that too lmao. Makes me think of SHREK but its over 5 minutes so time flies.

if u like 'holding out for a hero' u should download the whole footloose album(the broadway show)...lol i know some people are so NOT into show tunes...but it's basically a pop album...i dont know i feel like showtune albums pass the time 'cause they tell a story????

another AMAZING show : the last five years
seriously if ur into lyrics it's the most amazing cd...its only a 2person show(man & woman)...it starts off with the Woman at the end of the relationship, and the Guy at the begging & they pass through in opposite directions.....it's amazing. seriously will make u laugh & cry. the BEST.
