Questions for girls who run/excercise hard cardio wise

Original post by PeteysBride

Questions for you ladies who run/excercise hard enough to 'glow' (sweat):

1. If you're a runner, how long did it take for you to build up to running more than a mile? What is considered an acceptable speed?

It sounds silly but I want to build up my endurance but i have never been athletic nor excercised much before I got engaged. I was always pretty naturally thin so I didn't need to. But now obviously I need too and I like what running does to my booty! I can't do it everyday because my knees don't like it but I aim for 2x a week and then taking spinning the rest of the week.

Right now I can manage about a 20 minute run at 6.0 mph on the treadmill. I do a 5 min warmup and a 5 min cool down as well. I want to build up but I don't know what a realistic goal would be to reach for so I am reaching out to my athletic gals like SumemrsBride who I know runs 5 mile stints I want to be like you!

2. For all of you who excercise hard enough to break a good sweat, do you ever get an itch from it? And if you do, what do you do to handle it?

Sounds weird I know but when I start to sweat and my internal core temperature rises, I get this CRAZY bad itchy feeling-likea burninng and the areas get really hot and red. I get it between my boobs, lower back, thighs, behind my knees. Anywhere where it really gets heated. As soon as I cool down, it goes away. Its REALLY WEIRD. My mom and my aunt have it happen to them too. So I was wondering if it happens to anyone else and how they handle it. Like I could probably do a 30 minute run but by 15 minutes Im starting to get the itchies.Happens when I do anything that makes me sweat hard; biking, hiking, etc.

I do wear the special microfiber gym clothes that whisk away sweat and those seem to help but any other ideas? That stuff is sooo expensive!

yea - last five years is pretty cool..... when u listen to the entire album back to back it's an amazing story and oh so common.... it's neat because through the entire show they only cross paths through one song as they move through time....which is the day they realize they're in love, their proposal & through to their wedding day..it's cool

ps: summer in ohio will make u pee....to give u a little info - she's an actress and she's on a crappy tour...the lyrics are hysterical - i guess 'cause i can entirely relate as an actress!

Another question to ask.
Does running give you the runs? I swear the second I step off that treadmill my bowel makes itself known. I cannot get home fast enough.

I thought maybe it was the time but if I go at 10am or 7pm I have the same issue.

Sorry if TMI but after this I think I could run a marathin if I was promised a bathroom all to myself at the end.

hmm....not sure about the sweating issue - but i can KINDA help with the cardio. For one, if the treadmill is hard on ur knees, switch up the spinning with the eliptical machine....it's actually really GOOD for the knees and totally blasts calories and is GREAT for the booty & legs!
The best thing to do to build up ur cardio training is speed intervals & inclines... so if ur doing 20 minutes on the treadmill divy it up. 5minutes running, then 5minutes at a really fast pace powerwalk on a high incline, then back to running, and so on. The incline intervals along with fast/slower paces MAJORLY trains ur heart muscles. and this goes the same for machines..... my basic cardio routine is

Treadmill: 5minutes FAST powerwalk on a high incline, 5minutes running(no incline or very low incline), 5minutes powerwalk on incline again(and oh MAN will those inclines work ur booty!) - 15minutes all together...

Eliptical: 15minutes

Bike: 10minutes

total cardio workout: 40minutes

Any trainer will tell u that by circuit training with different machines and varying the times, inclines & speeds, u prevent ur system from plateau-ing & keep ur heartrate challenged.. hope this helps! it works for me!

I totally agree, you really have to do inclines its great for your workout. But once summer hits, I run at the beach, I love it, and its real tough to do!

I love circuit training, and its the only way I can do 60 min. of cardio twice a week, otherwise I get bored and won't last more than 20 min lol

Also I have really bad knees, I've had to get surgery a couple times, the first few times its going to hurt and maybe get swollen, always ice after you run, but I promise it gets better, it almost helps my knee, like loosens it up if that makes sense.

and for me, the playlist that gets me going is very random, but I find that AFI really gets me going!

1. If you're a runner, how long did it take for you to build up to running more than a mile? What is considered an acceptable speed?

I have been running since high school so I do not actually remember when I could run a mile without stopping but I do remember building up to what I do now. Since my high school team was not very competitive we only ran 5k. It was not really until the end of college that I decided to run more then 30 minutes. One summer I said okay I need to get into running. At first I only did 3 miles. Then I decided each day I would do an extra lap around a track. Before I knew it I was up to 5 miles. I was floored. I coudl really run 5 miles. By the end of the summer a long run would be 6 miles and I was just so proud of myself that I coudl run that much.

Right now I can manage about a 20 minute run at 6.0 mph on the treadmill. I do a 5 min warmup and a 5 min cool down as well. I would say 6.0 for 20 minutes is very good. Try to add just 1-2 minutes to each workout. Doesn't see like a lot but you will build up your endurance slowly which is best. SLOWLY is key so you do not injure yourself

not a weird question at all. I am usually itchy after I exercise. I talked to my doctor about it and she said to apply deodorant under my boobs (since that is where I am predominantly itchy) It has helped to reduce the itch (sorry if that is TMI)

but seriously - download the whole album...it's all really good!

I am going to try that one. I have a lot of Linkin Park on my runnign playlists and Prodigy. I liek firestarter because its fats and long so you go for almost 5 minutes. Holding out for a Hero is good liek that too lmao. Makes me think of SHREK but its over 5 minutes so time flies.

if u like 'holding out for a hero' u should download the whole footloose album(the broadway show)...lol i know some people are so NOT into show tunes...but it's basically a pop album...i dont know i feel like showtune albums pass the time 'cause they tell a story????

another AMAZING show : the last five years
seriously if ur into lyrics it's the most amazing cd...its only a 2person show(man & woman)...it starts off with the Woman at the end of the relationship, and the Guy at the begging & they pass through in opposite directions.....it's amazing. seriously will make u laugh & cry. the BEST.

OMG!! I love thr footloose musical soundtrack too! It is amazing!! I have it on tape - i need to download it to put it on my ipod

Not TMI at all! Thats why I asked cause its such a weird allergy. I use deoderant in my belly button for that reason LMAO SOOOOO odd but it keeps it from itching. I have a semi inny/outy. Its like a little swirl flat to my belly so if I sweat I get the itch there too. Never thought to put the deoderant elsewhere though-was afraid of reeking of powder fersh with white stripes everywhere like some exotic 2 legged zebra!

Gonan try it though and the building up as you suggested. When I get to my 3 mile mark I am going to Fm you -grins- like WOOOOO go me!

Sometimes running does upset my stomach, but it usually has more to do with what I ate before I go running. Yes- even foods you had hours before are still hanging out in your stomach during your run.

Oh icing after you run is good? I dont know anythign about sports medicine which is why i figured I would ask the athletic gals.

I REALLY njoy running because its HARD for me. When i started I couldnt do more than 5.0mph for 10 min...So SAD I know lmao but Im sooo NOT athletic. But when I build up I am soooo proud of myself. I think I finally have the breathing thing down pact-its not very sexy-lips parted so its like a vent for the air to circulate but its working!

So weird it is a everyday thing sorry you know more about me than you ever wanted to know.

I think of you everyday when I get on the treadmill. Last night I was able to jog for a full 10 minutes I know it's not that long but for me it was huge. I can't wait to be able to run 5 miles again.

Me too! I notice that when I do excercise and have a normal diet including my breakfast or oatmeal and a banana and 1 egg, I am ahem..regular....and I am NEVER regular. Used to go like 1x a week before someone told me that was abnormal.

Try to be careful what you eat before you ecercise and drinks LOTS of water to keep things flushed. I usually buy the huge 1.5 liter bottles and try to drain at least 1 a day but I aim for two. Its hard when its cold but the water does help my skin somethign tremendous.

I can't wait to run 5 miels PERIOD! I was the kid in school from elementary through HS that NO ONE wanted on their team lol...sooo sad....

I have always been thin but my trainer called me 'Skinny Fat' meaning I look thin but had NO muscle tone and no cardio endurance so seeing me in classes with fit women twice my size was pathetic-they were bouncing around like Gumby and I was panting after 10 minutes. But Im doing betetr now!
