Questions for girls who run/excercise hard cardio wise
Original post by PeteysBride
Questions for you ladies who run/excercise hard enough to 'glow' (sweat):
1. If you're a runner, how long did it take for you to build up to running more than a mile? What is considered an acceptable speed?
It sounds silly but I want to build up my endurance but i have never been athletic nor excercised much before I got engaged. I was always pretty naturally thin so I didn't need to. But now obviously I need too and I like what running does to my booty! I can't do it everyday because my knees don't like it but I aim for 2x a week and then taking spinning the rest of the week.
Right now I can manage about a 20 minute run at 6.0 mph on the treadmill. I do a 5 min warmup and a 5 min cool down as well. I want to build up but I don't know what a realistic goal would be to reach for so I am reaching out to my athletic gals like SumemrsBride who I know runs 5 mile stints I want to be like you!
2. For all of you who excercise hard enough to break a good sweat, do you ever get an itch from it? And if you do, what do you do to handle it?
Sounds weird I know but when I start to sweat and my internal core temperature rises, I get this CRAZY bad itchy feeling-likea burninng and the areas get really hot and red. I get it between my boobs, lower back, thighs, behind my knees. Anywhere where it really gets heated. As soon as I cool down, it goes away. Its REALLY WEIRD. My mom and my aunt have it happen to them too. So I was wondering if it happens to anyone else and how they handle it. Like I could probably do a 30 minute run but by 15 minutes Im starting to get the itchies.Happens when I do anything that makes me sweat hard; biking, hiking, etc.
I do wear the special microfiber gym clothes that whisk away sweat and those seem to help but any other ideas? That stuff is sooo expensive!

Posted by mrspalomino148 I totally agree, you really have to do inclines its great for your workout. But once summer hits, I run at the beach, I love it, and its real tough to do!
I love circuit training, and its the only way I can do 60 min. of cardio twice a week, otherwise I get bored and won't last more than 20 min lol
Also I have really bad knees, I've had to get surgery a couple times, the first few times its going to hurt and maybe get swollen, always ice after you run, but I promise it gets better, it almost helps my knee, like loosens it up if that makes sense.
and for me, the playlist that gets me going is very random, but I find that AFI really gets me going!
Oh icing after you run is good? I dont know anythign about sports medicine which is why i figured I would ask the athletic gals.
I REALLY njoy running because its HARD for me. When i started I couldnt do more than 5.0mph for 10 min...So SAD I know lmao but Im sooo NOT athletic. But when I build up I am soooo proud of myself. I think I finally have the breathing thing down pact-its not very sexy-lips parted so its like a vent for the air to circulate but its working!
Icing is defiantly good, you'll see baseball players icing there arms after they pitch, My trainer always told me to ice my knees because mine swell an insane amount, but I also wear my brace if I plan on really working out hard.
I totally understand that running is hard for you, because it still is for me lol. Once I do it everyday it gets better, but if I go a week without it I can barely do any. You really just need to stick to it and over time it will get easier and easier.
and at least you know how to breath right .. you know your doing it right when it looks verry sexy

hey jenn, i havent been to the gym in decades but when i DID, it was always so hard for me to keep up the cardio. My knees would give way to easily and I'd be so sore that I could barely walk afterwards for days. but my biggest problem was the asthma.. The way I finally got into routine was by doing 5 minutes running, 5 walking and so on... It was the easiest way for me to get into the cardio routine and not DIE
as far as the itching- have you tried powders?

Im def going to try the sprinting then walking again. I was doing that and liked it but I wasnt sure if thatw as a good enough workout cause everyone around me seemed to be running for miles on end.
I have. Baby powder helps but once I start to sweat I end up looking weird cause I get stripey. I actually made an appointment with an allergist because I think its an allergic reaction to myself cause happens to my aunt as well.

It took me a good 3 months to build up stamina and gain performance on the treadmill but i NEVER worked out before, EVER lol so it took me a while. I used to do 1.5 mile in 20 min now i can do 2.5 in 30min. But i walk and run, changing speed and incline the entire time. Which is alot better since you sweat more and burn alot more calories and i run 3-5 times a week.

jen I get the same thing with my skin at the gym -- but I am also prone to eczema breakouts and I think that's what it's from.

I run on a treadmill for about 2.5 miles straight with no break... sometimes I have to take a minute 'fast walking' break to catch my breathe. I have asthma so running on a track or concrete is tough for me.
It took a couple of months to be able to run on a treadmill.. The precor I can run for 5-6 miles... just dont have the time.
I can't run unless I'm reading a book... isn't that INSANE??
There is a GREAT program you can DL that helps you build up endurance...
it takes time, but it can be done... I never thought I would be able to just RUN...

Re: Questions for girls who run/excercise hard cardio wise
Ok i had to train to run 4.5 miles with 20lbs on my back as part of my Black Belt test...i wanted to cry at the thought...in order to train for it...i literally started by running around 1 block...my cardio was not that great at first...and after running with my Master i realized i was trying to run way to fast and too far and just getting frustrated.
So...my advice is literally start with small goal and a slower pace...i am not a gym person at all so i run in my neighborhood. I started with one block...did that for about a week...then went to two blocks....and so on until i was able to run 5 miles...i have knee issues but for me running actually helped them since i was building up my leg muscle.
Jumping rope and jumping jacks are other good cardio builders...i also worked on weight training...and once i started losing some fat the running got easier!
I just started running again...and am only doing a mile...will build back up to 5 eventually!
We should have an LIW 5k run...hehe

OMG sweetie. We're both messed up! What you have, and what I have is called Excersize urticaria and I have to take Clarinex every single day (about 4 hrs before I go to the gym) so that I don't itch like crazy after about 5 min of running
I hate it, but it's what I have to do to be able to do any sort of cardio. Clarinex is an antihistimine and it's not OTC. I've taken benadryl and fell asleep and I've also taken alavert but that didn't help too much.

ps: if i'm REALLY feeling up for it, I'll do the rotating staircase....not sure if ur gym has it, but most NYSC's do (it's the machine that looks like moving stairs)....HOLY SH*T is that hard!!! when ur done with cardio routine(or even cut it a little short), leave the last 5-10minutes for that sh*t..... u will be put to the test and ur booty/legs will KILL the next day! lol.
she's not kidding, i tried that thing once, and WHOA i was sore! (also almost fell off it lol, i still don't know how!)

Oh DOH I should have asked you from the beginning! I keep forgetting you're in the medical field.
So it has a name? Hmm ok. So this is what i would tell the doctor that I think I may have? Do they test for it? Should i go to an allergist or a dermatolgist? I booked an appointment with an allergist because I just wasn't sure and thats what Stacey recommended.

WHOA Kath! You are frickin She-Ra!!!!! Hmm ok I am going to try that. I was doing the SELF Magazine challenge thing where they start you rinning for 6-7mph for only 8 minutes the first week, then 10 the next and so on, going up by 2 min at a time. I was able to do 10 minutes off the bat so I started and have built to almost 20 as long as I don't get that damning itch!
We should seriously all do something togetehr! maybe not run but they have all those walks. Maybe we cn do team LIW walking for different causes this year! I always do the March of Dimes cause I was a premie...maybe we can do that?

You should def see an allergist and what I have is excersize urticaria. What you may have is the same as what I have or you may also have temperature (heat) Urticaria. Do you get hives and itch when taking a hot shower too? if you dol, then you have the latter. I just break out in ridiculous hives when I run and they itch like a b*tch!!! Good luck! You'll prob get antihistamines. MAKE SURE that you tell her you don't want to get pills that make you gain weight and make sure they're not sedating. Those are two sideeffects to watch out for.
