Remakes & Sampling

Creative re-working, or copycats?

I get angry when I hear soooo many remakes of songs. Write your own music! Don't sample music that already exists, change the words slighly, and call it your own!

copycats!!!! It makes me more mad when they redo good films. I mean hello they were already good why do you have to remake them!

Sometimes songs use samples of others to make a new one - I like that if it's cool ... like 'set a drift on memory bliss' uses 'true' by spandeau ballet -- love both songs and think set a drift .. is such an awesome song.

sampling I do not mind. I think it's clever and can sound AWESOME. remakes are another story. some can ruin a very good song. Like jessica simpson's version of 'angel' by robbie williams. OH.MY.GOD. what a slaughtering.

i have mixed feelings about remakes. the dance remakes of old songs, i generally don't like. but if it's a song, take for instance Enjoy the Silence by Depeche Mode, both Tori Amos and Lacuna Coil covered the song, and all three versions are completely different. When it's a straight up remake, I don't care for it, but if the artist covering the song does something different with it, it can really work out, especially when it's already a good song, and another good artist is redoing it.

sampling I'm OK with, as long as you give credit to the original song.

The Dan Band's version of 'Total Eclipse of the Heart' is the pefect example of a good remake.
