Someone who was once religious and stopped decides they want to be religious again for whatever reason.

Re: Silly question
A born again Christian is someone who usually stops following a specific religion example: someone who is Catholic and chooses to belong to a non denominational church and is born again by making a new commitment to religion or spirituality. They are 're born' with new values and beliefs often proposed by the new church. They are also referred to as Evangelical.

ok that part i get - but why is there a name for it? and why is it born again christian? if i became religious again wouldn't i be a born again roman catholic? or a born again protestant? i mean understand those all fall under *christianity* i just don't get why it gets to have its own name - it makes it sound like its another religion when its not

Re: Silly question
im only asking b/c i read an article on msnbc today about how less people in america are religious and follow a religion and one of the percentages was for 'born agains' and it just made me wonder why they got their own group in the study when i thought born agains could be part of any religous christian group depending on what you were to start off as
im probably not making any sense

Its generally associated with people who belong to the same church, generally a nondenominational. Here is NY I don't think there are as many of these nondenominational church because much of LI is Catholic but in different parts of the country born again or Evangelicals are fairly prevalent.

oh so they DO have their own church? so if i decided that i wanted to be 'born again' i won't go back to my old church? i will go to a totally new church that is only for born agains?

Re: Silly question
If I remember correctly they actually get re-baptized and are viewed as if they are 'born again' as in only carrying original sin.
I could be wrong though.

I never got it either. Like, why not just go back to any church. Why do you have to be referred to as a 'born-again'

Re: Silly question
I found this on wikepedia and I think it probably descibes born-again christians the best:
'Some Evangelical, Fundamentalist, and Pentecostal Christians associate 'being born again' with a conversion experience that involves a personal, and sometimes intense, encounter of the individual with the power of God; a moment or period when they acknowledged their response to accept God's salvation and follow Him. Some Christians in these groups may say that those without such a conversion experience, (i.e. the point where one responds to the encounter by choosing to follow God and accept His forgiveness in their life [not the powerful encounter itself]), are not 'saved'. In other words, since the Bible teaches that salvation comes by Faith, it is thus Faith and not the experience that makes a person born again; the experience itself is often a way in which God encourages and inspires Faith. '
Techinically born-again people value the relationship with God more than just religion or religious rites, but many have twisted that idea and made it about religiousness. JMHO. I think fundamentally the idea is sound, but pratically it has just become another form of being religious. However, as with all religion there are some that are genuine in their beliefs

I don't know everything about it. I have family who are born again who live in Florida from what I know they belong to a church where everyone there is 'born again', mostly its people who followed religions with rules mostly ex Catholics who are 'born again' into a new religion.

Re: Silly question
I was told by a few born agains that god had come to them and asked them to do their work One lady said he came to her while she was in the shower.
I have also heard that people that did very very bad things in their life, become born again to overcome their past
I only know a few of them so i cant speak for all

well i don't want to insult anyone who might be a born again but ive heard of a lot of negative things about it so i guess that is part of my curiousity - like that born agains are 'crazies' or used to be really bad people....stuff like that.....but thats not my opinion just what i heard - i just wasn't sure if they had their own church or not or if i would be considered a 'born again' if i started going back to church (i was raised RC but don't practice anymore) but i guess not hahahaha well, it doesn't matter b/c i dont think i am going back anytime soon....

LOL..it must be a slow day.
Being born again is a decision so you aren't necessarily born into it...like being catholic, muslim, etc.. On the flip side though you are more than likely to be the religion of your parents so most of the time your kids will just follow whatever religion you are even in born-again churches. However for them it's about the person making the decision. So they don't necessarily do baby-baptisms but do baby presentations, later on you make the decision to be 'born again' and if you want to be baptized after your 'bone-again' or 'saved' you do itas a symbol of your faith. That's my take on it all.
