I saw this post on the 08 boards, about 'making money on the wedding' from gifts received. click me and I thought it was an interesting topic.
So ladies, without needing to actually divulge the (unless you want to, of course) ...
Did you 'MAKE MONEY' on the wedding? Did you get back more than was spent on everything?

Re: So .... did you 'make money'?
I hear ya!
Our gifts totaled to less than 1/2 of what was spent on the wedding day.
ETA: I'm really curious though, b/c a few of the brides-to-be seem to be counting on profiting from the day, and I didn't really think anyone ever 'made money' on it.

Re: So .... did you 'make money'?
NOT AT ALL!!!!!! I only made back a little more than half of the cost of JUST the reception hall... other than the fact that a bunch of guests stiffed me on gifts big time, even if those people had given me gifts, I still wouldn't have made back the amount I paid for the hall alone, much less the entire wedding! I probably made back about 1/3 the cost of everything. Oh well, what can ya do??? I knew I wouldn't make all or most of it back anyway.

Re: So .... did you 'make money'?
Ummm no. First off we didn't go into it thinking we WOULD 'make money' from the wedding. We only invited those that we love and are very close to us and they are not well off to begin with so we would have been happy with ANYTHING we got. We were just so happy to have a great wedding and share with those that we love.
That said, our gifts totaled almost 1/3 of what we paid for the wedding - NOT including the honeymoon which was . We had 10 couples come and not give anything at all (not even a card).
I know there are other couples that take home 1/2 or even the same amount they paid for the wedding (or more!) which is awesome. ESPECIALLY if they have people helping pay for their wedding to begin with (DH and I paid for everything on our own AND had to get our own place for after the wedding and furnish it all at the same time as paying for the wedding). So I guess it's possible to 'make money' at your wedding - we just don't look at things like that, nor did we experience that.

ITA! Making money isn't the point of having a wedding. I only started the post b/c of the thread I linked to where the brides to be are actually counting on it financially. I was shocked to read that since I thought it was common knowledge that couples don't really profit on the day.

WOW. That is all I can say. WOW!! That's a lot of inconsiderate people ... we had a couple of people that didn't give anything ... but no where near 10.

I totally get why you started the thread - I've seen posts about 'making money' all the time. I should also say about the 10 couples, 3 told us that they would give us something after the wedding, and two couples sent us gifts from the registry after the wedding (one couple sent us a $39 frame as the wedding gift, the other gave us $100 gift). It is what it is.

Re: So .... did you 'make money'?
I'd say that we got back maybe 60% of what we spent??? I actually consider us lucky that we even got back as much as we did. Yes some were more generous than others, but what can you do. You can't control what people give you, but I was grateful to those that really went above & beyond with their generosity.

yes. we got about $5,000.00 more than what we spent. But I think it's tacky to refer to it as 'making money'

Re: So .... did you 'make money'?
DH and I are in a different position because our parents paid for the majority of our wedding and for our HM. We're very lucky. We paid for the little details, but the major vendors were all taken care of. So we DID come out of it with extra cash. And all of our guests but one gave us gifts.
I don't believe, however, that anyone paying for their own wedding will make what they put into it unless their guests give extremely generous gifts.

I think it was more we were REALLY thrifty with what we spent... =)
Also, we didn't take a HM... we will eventually
plus, my parents paid for the reception... so THAT helped... otherwise we would have been about 10,000 in a hole.

Re: So .... did you 'make money'?
I replied in the '08 thread but I'll reply here too.
We went into our wedding knowing that we weren't going to see any of the money back....and boyyyyyy were we right! We paid for the entire wedding ourselves and only made back about 10% of what we put in.
