I saw this post on the 08 boards, about 'making money on the wedding' from gifts received. click me and I thought it was an interesting topic.
So ladies, without needing to actually divulge the (unless you want to, of course) ...
Did you 'MAKE MONEY' on the wedding? Did you get back more than was spent on everything?

Re: So .... did you 'make money'?
Our guests actually covered the cost of the hall and thanks to very generous gifts from our parents we actually came out a little ahead.

Re: So .... did you 'make money'?
We had split the cost the wedding three ways and made back more than what we had put in, but we missed the total amount by quite a lot.
ETA: We made 'back' about 2/3 of the cost plus gifts.

I hear ya!
Our gifts totaled to less than 1/2 of what was spent on the wedding day.
ETA: I'm really curious though, b/c a few of the brides-to-be seem to be counting on profiting from the day, and I didn't really think anyone ever 'made money' on it.
Our gifts also totaled HALF of what we spent!

We spilt the cost of the entire wedding 3 ways. My parents, DH's parents and us. We got back 2/3 of the cost of the wedding and double what we put in. I was actually shocked that we got as much as we did.

Re: So .... did you 'make money'?
I think it is wrong to call it 'making money' because I dont see it that way. I didn't have an elaborate, fancy over the top wedding so we actually had 85% of what we spent given back and we paid for the whole wedding ourselves.

Re: So .... did you 'make money'?
We were lucky to have family members who contributed to our wedding...we were able to break even....we didn't have an expensive wedding...having said that...no one should expect to make back what they spent on their wedding...thats just how it is....

Nope, we made back about 1/3 of what we spent. We did not expect to make money on our wedding. We just wanted to get married and share our special day with our friends and family.

No. Although we received a very generous gifts from most of our guest - our goal is not to make money out of it. We had our wedding because want to celebrate our happiness with our friends and families.

Re: So .... did you 'make money'?
Just thought Id crash to clarify my post on the 08 boards. In my post I mentioned how I hated to think of it that way. I never even thought about 'making money' back on my wedding day until my mom brought it up. Anyone who knows me knows I would never be that selfish to EXPECT money for something. It may sound 'tacky' but lets not try and act like most brides are financially strapped by the time the wedding comes up. I wrote that post while thinking about how many guests Im over and all the payments that are still due to vendors while my wedding is less than 2 months away. Its natural to be frazzled by that. IM happy that this day will bring my whole family together and at the end of the day I will make ends meet regardless of what I get that night. Okay just wanted to clarify because I know how that post can sound and IM definitely not selfish, just stressed.

Re: So .... did you 'make money'?
no we didn;t either make it back, we made enough to just cover what we spent on the hall. we knew we weren't going to make back the money we spent. but then agian thats not why we had a wedding. we did it to celebrate our love for one another. we also had 1700 stolen from us at the wedding so out of the gift money i needed to replace that 1700 to my dj. it was his money that was stolen from us. that pissed me off the most.

Wait...what happened to your dj? $Someone stole his fee? Or his personal money? Why didn't the catering hall cover that?

Re: So .... did you 'make money'?
We got about half back, a little more than I expected, 'Thanks Daddy!'
I expected that our sibs weren't gonna give us a gift and I was right. I was surprised by one cousin tho, I wonder if he thought his mother was going to cover his gift?!?!?
I wouldn't change a thing tho, I loved every second of the wedding!

Re: So .... did you 'make money'?
Our wedding cost more than what we made, but my dad and DH's parents paid for a good chunk of the wedding, so DH and I ended up making money off the day.

it was my dj's fee. i had to pay him the rest of the money cash the day of the wedding. when i went to pay him the envelope for him was gone. i had them all rubberbanded together and his was the one missing. someone went into my moms bag and took it. the hall did nothing. my maitre d goes to me do you want a drink to take the edge off. i was like no b**ch i want my money. i went bridezilla in the bridal room cried my eyes out. then i got control of myself and had a good time. my dj rocked. the dance was non stop the whole time.
