DH and I are in the process of buying a house...but we are having trouble. We are buying in NJ and you just don't get much for your $$$.
Anyone else in the process. OR..those who already have purchased a house...is it more work then you thought it would be?

Re: SPINOFF - How many of you already bought a house?
We bought a house at the end of June and have not moved in yet. The one we bought is a real fixer upper. Any of the houses that didn't need any work were so much $$$$. DH and my dad have been working on it non-stop and it was frustrating at first because it was all destruction work but finally seeing the rooms take shape (the tub going in, the floors being sanded, rooms painted) is great. It is def more work and money then we thought it would be but when we move in and are settled we are hoping it will all be worth it. Good Luck on your search

Re: SPINOFF - How many of you already bought a house?
We just bought a home in NJ. The market is scary....it is totally true that you cannot get too much for your money. It depends what is important to you, how much space you need, proximity to work, neighborhood, schools, etc.
Proximity to manhattan and a great neighborhood was most important to us. We are not quite ready to go straight to the burbs.
We ultimatey bought the top floor of a brownstone close to Manhattan, which works really well for us.
We had a rather rough experience b/c we fell in love with this condo (the one we bought) but it had some real issues that were discovered in the inspection. It was heartbreaking. We ultimately decided to buy it anyway, and fix all of the problems. We also had a TERRIBLE RE lawyer, who didn't show up for the closing, and the previous owners were a pain in the neck! Our situation was uniquely sttressful......most are not like this. I think the fact that we did all this, while planning a wedding added to the stress.

Re: SPINOFF - How many of you already bought a house?
We closed on our house in December. I think the most stressful part was actually house-hunting bc it just go so overwhelming looking at so many different places and then being disappointed bc it wasn't what we wanted. Or it was perfect but out of our price range.
Once we put an offer on our house and it was accepted then things got much easier. Our RE agent recommended our mortgage broker, inspector, lawyer, and insurance company; everyone was great to work with and made the process much easier than we feared it was going to be.

We couldn't afford a house in the area that we wanted so we bought a condo instead. We weren't ready to move away from the metro so we got a smaller place in a good location. We're planning on selling in 3 years and finally getting a house or a townhouse.

We bought a house in April and it is sooooo much work. We're both busting our butts every day but it is so worth it. Sometimes I'm jealous of people who live in apts though b/c you don't have all the responsibility! You can just go home and relax and the landlord worries about everything!

we did.. three months after we got married. Looking for it wasn't hard work... it kind of found us. BUT, painting it and making it 'ours' even though it was new construction took ALOT of work!

We bought a house in Marine Park Brooklyn1 year prior to the wedding.
WE renovated rooom by room to help with the costs and we had time because the weddign was 1 year away.

We just got an offer accepted on a house. We are just waiting for the contracts. It is really tough house hunting. We probably looked at about 60 houses (I lost track). When you find the right one for you, you will defintely know it. DH never really had any reaction to the houses we looked at. As soon as we walked into this house. He was like we are bidding on this. You just need a lot of patience but in the end I think it is totally worth it.

DH and I just bought our first house in June. We knew what we could afford each month so it was just a matter of how much of a down payment would be needed. We have a nice little starter house. We'll stay here for a few years, fix up a few things, and then we'll move out. We are totally ok with that. We know it's hard to live around here and we are just proud of ourselves for being able to do it.

We just closed on our house in Ronkonkoma in May but didn't move in until after our wedding. For those two months we spent almost everyday fixing it up. Now it's just starting to look and feel like home. I love that it's ours.

We bought a house right before the wedding... It's a lot of work but we love it! We love decorating it and just being in it. It's the best thing you could do if your able.

Re: SPINOFF - How many of you already bought a house?
we just had our offer accepted today
buying a home on LI is just like westchester and NJ..... very expensive. Like most newlyweds, I like to joke we could only afford a crackhouse But actually, it was TRUE. We actually couldn't afford small homes in neighborhoods mom told me to avoid as a kid.... And our goal was to get a place close to where we live now, where we could walk everywhere.... which seemed totally cost prohibitive.
Well, we found a small 5 room house in a PERFECT location.... right where we want to be. Sure, it needs tons of work.... Sure, the land is on a 30 degree tilt in many places, but heck, if all goes well, we'll be living EXACTLY where we want....
And, as mentioned above, a fixer-upper means YOU choose the kitchen cabinets and appliances
