Stolen from LIF: Does anyone else feel like they do everything?

Original post by lizzie217

I read this on the relationship board and it made me angry how many women are stuck doing EVERYTHING in their house

DH and I share responsiblites...I work to ya know! Sure I think I end up doing more...but we shoot for 50/50. Since I get home earlier I think I assume more responsibilites for errands..but from the second we moved in together (after the wedding) I made it clear that I am not the work horse....I think some women like doing all the work (my mom does) I do not and feel that if I did I would resent my DH...plus he grew up with a dad that helped his mom A LOT...so I think that is a huge influence on him...

I honestly think DH does more than me! I feel bad sometimes because I'm sitting on the couch watching tv and he's running around straightening up. The only thing he never does is dust because his allergies are so bad. I always do the dusting but I don't mind because he really does a lot around the house.

see my DH has never dusted. And my allergies are so bad so basically our apartment is a gross dusty mess. It drives me INSANE!!!!!!! I might try paying him to do it....

cry me a river girls, no dishwasher here!

Us either! We are the dishwashers.

if we didn't have a dishwasher I would only use paper. Cus I know it would all build up and either I'd have to do all the washing or it wouldnt get done. Dishwasher was high on my priorities when looking for an apartment for this reason.

I get upset when i read these threads, and i read the one on LIF, My DH does so much for me, i really don't have to lift a finger. Honestly if i knew when i got married i would have to work full time and do everything around the house, I would of just stayed single, its not worth it to me.
I got married to make my life easier not harder.

eta: its not the only reason i got married, obv for love, but i just see what some people close to me are going through and i just don't understand it. I'd rather not post exactly what i'm talking about on here. FM me if you want to know.

If I had a 9 to 5 like he did everything would be split down the middle. I work on the weekends. During the week I cook, clean, etc. Sometimes if I really dont want to he will cook or do the dishes. And on the weekends he wakes up and makes me breakfast and does some stuff around the house. He's really good like that but no way in hell, if I had the same schedule as him, would I do everything without a fight. This is a partnership, we're a team and we do things to help make our lives easier. He hates to see me stressed out and loves to help as much as he can.

I think I do alot more than DH. But at the same time I work longer hours but less days. When I work he takes care of things and prepares dinner. on my days off I clean the apartment. Every now and then I complain but to be honest he does alot and we work together. Even though I do more (and he'll justify this) I'd rather spend fun time or down time with DH than cleaning together!

He does the majority of the food shopping, cleans the litter box and loves to empty and load the dishwasher.

Hey, if he scoops the poop daily I'll glady vacuum, clean the bathroom and do the laundry!

Okay that is one thing I CANNOT get him to do. My poor cat's litterbox will have pounds of poop in it if I rely on him! He can see it build up and just not do a thing about it. I could smack him over the head for that one considering she was an X-mas gift for his lazy a$$

Honestly, I DO enjoy taking care of him. I kind of like when he gets to say that he comes home to a home cooked meal every night and he doesn't have to worry about his laundry and stuff like that. . . I just need to vent every once in a while.

There was no way my life COULD get easier when I got married - my mother did everything for us LOL and she still would if we let her. She enjoys taking care of her family so I guess that is where I got it from.

I think DH and myself have a good system....he does the heavy things...and the things that we just both know that I'm not good at ... LOL. But then I will do everything else...such as the simple cleaning. We share all of our responcibilites right down the middle....and we both always help eaqchother. It should never be on just one person... JMO

Re: Stolen from LIF: Does anyone else feel like they do everything?

It's pretty even, and i get lucky now bc dh gets home earlier than I do. And since he gets home earlier he just volunteers many times to go to the supermarket and pick something up if we need it, or stop at a deli if we need smaller things. I havent even had to move my car for alternate side bc dh does this too, i told him he doesnt have to bc i can do it but he said theres more parking when he gets home so might as well.

He helps with the cleaning and again since he gets home first, many times the room is cleaned by the time i get home since we make a mess when getting ready in the morning, he'll start the dishwasher if it needs it, and took out the garbage. I do the cooking though, unless he makes sauce its the one thing he makes. With the cleaning he makes the bed, puts clothes away and that sort of stuff but when we have to do a thorough cleaning, i clean the toilets, and floors, vacuum, dust everything and do that.

It's good also bc on saturday mornings, he'll get a shape up and its the day he drops off dry cleaning and does his errands and pick up things he needs at the drugstore and without asking he'll pick up things we need such as soap, q-tips and that sort of stuff.

I have to say my hubby too. I a doing an externship now and I then have school at night, so he does pretty much everything. A big difference from how i grew up, and he is the one that complains bc he does everything in the house. I don't ask him to he just gets to everything before me. he also gets home at 3 pm or he works all night and is home during the day. I'm theone who cooks most of the time but there are days he doesn't want to wait for me to get home so he will prepare something. I wonder if this is gonna change once i graduate??? i hope not I'm getting used to this .

I think me & DH kind of split it. I take care of the inside of the house (including cooking dinners and making our lunches) and he takes care of the outside, as well as the cars and any other random repairs.

I do think that i do most of the work though (only because my stuff has to be done daily pretty much), but that's absolutely fine since I'm not working right now. Since i'm being the 'housewife' I've always wanted to be (lol) why WOULDN'T I take care of things? But I'll be starting work within the next month or so (God willing) and I'm a little curious if things will stay the way they are now. If I'm working part time, then it's no problem.

I think when couples are BOTH working full time, then the house work should also be split 50/50. In my house, my mother did everything. I mean, she did the inside work as well as outside (mowing the lawn, taking out the garbage, etc) as well as working full time (2 jobs in fact). I never thought that was right. maybe when she was home raising the kids. But as soon as she went back to work - it shouldn't have been all on her. How ridiculous.

thats how my parents were and it bothered me. My dad was an old school european who thought everything should be done for him. I used to get so annoyed when she got home late from work and she would have to cook dinner right away and he couldnt get up to do anything for himself. The worst part is that he is a great cook, but god forbid he helped out. My dad is a great person has a big heart, is a great father but as a husband oh god he needed a lot of work in that department. His parents were like that and my grandmother wouldnt let the men do anything in the house, she felt a man shouldn't do a thing Growing up I said i am never gonna deal with a man like that lol. A lot of girls say they want a man like their father, or girls who have daddy issues, i wanted the complete opposite. This is also why i never was somebody who really wanted to get married, i said if i find an amazing person that i love not just someone that i love then i wont get married. My dad used to ask when im gonna get married and i used to say 'why so i can get a man that i have to take care bc he cant do anything for himself, ill just get a dog' lol

I fell in love with dh but also loved that he wasn't like this. Its funny bc he is spoiled in other ways but at home he always helped his mother out. He ran errands for her, did laundry if they needed and always cleaned up after himself, they never had to do it for him.

Honestly, if dh was the type of guy who just sat there and didnt do a thing and didnt appreciate what was done for him, i wouldn't do anything for him. When i wasnt working i did most of the work which i think only makes sense, i was home all day and would be messed up if i didnt. Even then he still did things. It only makes sense that we help eachother out. If he gets home earlier and we need things from the supermarket, he'll get it so this way i dont have to stop at the market on the way home and i get home earlier and we eat earlier. Otherwise he would have to wait longer for dinner. I dont know if my dad ever said thank you or showed he appreciated it.

while I dont do everything- I do a lot. DH works longer hours than I do however, I wish he would help more.

If I ask him to do something- he does it- but he would never like think to vaccum on his own- he has to be asked

Same here. DH does do some of the work but I think I do more of it. My DH also works long hours and works 2 jobs so I feel bad making him come home to clean. MY DH will also never pick up the vacuum on his own (its rare) unless I ask him to.
